worth the $

this was one of the better books ive read lately. unlike some of the other erotic novels this one actually had a rather intresting story line. i would recomend that you purchase the 2nd book 'the mark of the vampire queen' as well. both books are rather long and well writen. this was one book i actually didnt find myself fliping through and skiping segments to try and keep my attention. i only wish there were more.

This one was very cerebral. There was alot of sex in it (hot, I might add), but the focus was definitely on the character's thoughts, politics, feelings, conflict. I did like it, btu at first wasn't sure I wanted to read another 400 pages of the turmoil. Also, at first the SM in the book was borderline too much for me. But once I got emotionally involved & the dynamics changed, I was fine. Joey Hill definitely pushes the comfort level, but does it so beautifully that without it the story would not have been the same.
In any event, I did buy Mark of the Vampire Queen, which was EVEN better than this one, though without this one first, I would have been lost. I do recommend this series.

Absolutely SMOKIN'!

I read the reviews of this book and debated ordering it....even put it off for months because, while I love almost all vampire novels, I wasn't particularly drawn to a story about a dominant female vampire (I usually like stories the other way around where the males are dominant).

Curiosity got the better of me and I thought "Eh, what the heck!" and I ordered it.

I am SOOOO glad I did. Not only is this book well written (and with plenty of erotic, "get-you-all-hot-and-bothered" scenes) but much to my delight, it's a true love story too! It's a very touching story of a man who finally finds himself and a vampire queen who is incredibly tough yet has weaknesses just like humans do.

It's truly excellent!

Annette Childs holds a Ph.D. in psychology and maintains a private practice assisting individuals and families to grow through painful transitions. She has devoted much of her work to assisting the dying and their families to find peace and meaning at the end of life. As a researcher she has extensively studied the near death experience and other mystical phenomenon and has contributed original research to her field. A self taught wordsmith who writes from the heart, her style is rich with metaphor and symbolism. Halfway Across the River

Halfway Across the River is a beautifully written book with stories about the terminally ill transitioning into and accepting death. It's about loved ones left behind and occurrences of communication from "the other side". Woven into the book is the loving story of Margaret and Don. Don is skeptical about feeling Margaret's persistent presence after her death, but there are some events that can't be explained away. Halfway Across the River leaves one with hope that our loved ones are present in a spiritual way. This book is not morose but rather offers some real life touching stories about death and the loved ones left behind. It's a light read that is not just for those dealing with death and dying, it's an engaging book filled with real accounts of events that unfolded for Annette and her work with hospice.

Whether you are facing serious illness and possibly death or know someone who is, this book will help you to find comfort and peace. You will also come to know an amazing woman, Margaret Borwhat, and the legacies she has left behind. Dr. Childs' writing makes you feel like you know the people she introduces personally which helps you to believe events described even though some of them can seem unbelievable.

A wonderful book

Annette covers a difficult topic and makes it easier for those going through this process to have some comfort and a form of closure knowing that there will be continuance of the "being." One has to be open or receptive to the events that occur in life to be aware of what is actually occurring around us or the messages just simply go un-noticed. This book has become a permanent part of my bookshelf and I have recommended it to two very close friends that are going through a similiar life changing crisis. I encourage everyone to read this book at least one time and watch the world change around you.

"A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." When X, Y and Z finally scramble up the trunk, however, the weight is too much, and down they all tumble in a colorful chaotic heap: "Chicka Chicka . . . BOOM! BOOM!" LOVE the full story board book!!!

I actually found this at a book store, I was walking by and I almost screamed with delight! My daughter who is 9 months LOVES this book- we have the paper back and a small board book which doesn't have the whole story (boooo). Anyways I bought Two copies of this!! It is a huge full sized board book with THE WHOLE STORY!!! Awesome! This book is made to last! If your child loves this book I suggest the board book- it's perfect for little ones and its VERY durable!

A word of warning. If you haven't a rhythmic bone in your body, you'd best not be reading "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" anytime soon. This book is arguably the best known alphabet book on the market today. Telling a tale of alphabetic foolhardiness, a troop of lower case letters (all of them, in fact) go bounding up the nearby coconut tree for a variety of reasons. When the tree can no longer support their weight the little letters find themselves splayed out on the ground. Fortunately the big letters come along to comfort the little ones, though it's obvious by the end that not all have learned their lesson.
Verses of the letters' exploits are intermixed with chants like so;
"Chicka chick boom boom!
Will there be enough room?

Great collection of Arduino Projects

The Arduino has been one of the key elements in fueling interest in IoT among individual developers of all ages. It is an excellent way to get started with both electronics and programming and build fun little projects along the way, which could form the basis of future ideas. Often one of the challenges that one faces with getting started with the board is that you need to understand what you exactly need in terms of hardware i.e. in addition to the Arduino, you will also need multiple other electronic components like sensors, resistors, wires, etc. In addition to that, you need to have sample code ready to make sure that you can see your little project come to light.

This book, Arduino Project Handbook by Mark Geddes is an excellent resource that presents 25 fun projects that you can do with the Arduino. Early on in the book, you can easily note that the author has scouted through multiple resources for us and carefully prepared each project for the reader. Each project specifies clearly the components needed and also provides the code and detailed explanation along with circuit diagrams, so that you have a multiple ways that you can learn about the projects.

The 25 projects are split into multiple categories like LEDs, Sound, Servos, LCDs, Numeric Controls and Security. Each of these categories has multiple projects in them starting with simple ones and growing in complexity. You can also jump into any project that interests you, which I found very valuable since it is perfectly possible that you might not have all the components for a specific project. I like the way the projects have been broken into categories and they start making a lot of sense since typically in most IoT projects- you sense/collect data, visualize data and maybe perform actions. Given that the categories fall in place beautifully.

The book comes along with a companion site where you can download the libraries and sketches. That is a great help if your interest is more on plug and play without going much into the details. An Appendix on Components is very helpful, especially if this is your guide to teach electronics to others.

Overall this is a great collected of projects on the Arduino platform. It can save you tons of hours scouting around the internet for similar information.

Neat book with extra projects if you already have some experience with Arduino

I teach a high school Applied STEM class, and one of the units I'm introducing this year is circuits and Arduinos. I bought an Arduino directly from the company for myself to mess with, and also a bunch of kits sold by Vilros for my students. First off, let me say that the book that comes with the Ardurino directly from the company is stellar. It does a nice job explaining projects, pieces, background, the code....I love it. The book that comes with the Vilros is pretty poor, on the other hand. Unfortunately, the Arduino book that comes with the kit from the company is not independently for sale anywhere, so I am always on the lookout for good books that I can bring into my classroom as resources for the kids who want to go beyond the few projects that we will do in class.

So, how does this Arduino Project Handbook compare? There's some good background, and I love that the book is in color (super important for putting together circuits!). There are 22 projects (only 15 in the original Arudino book), so you definitely get some good variety with this Project Handbook. However, the book that comes from Arduino has some nice features that are lacking in the Project Handbook. The original book gives you a difficulty level for each project, the estimated amount of time each project will take, and really does an amazing job giving background and explaining what each part in the circuit is doing, along with the point of the code.

About the Author
After 32 years as a radiography program director, Quinn B. Carroll recently took his retirement from Midland College in Texas as an assistant professor to write full time. Quinn has published three textbooks, workbooks and a number of journal articles. His newest publication is Radiography in the Digital Age, released in 2011 along with several instructional ancillaries. Quinn has presented over 120 seminars in Canada and the USA, and many dozens of presentations for state societies and the ASRT. Quinn received his Master of Education degree from the University of Wyoming and his BS degree from the University of Utah, where he also obtained his radiography training at the University Medical Center. He is a dynamic, fun speaker and very excited to be part of meeting the challenge to embrace digital technology head on.

Dennis Bowman RT(R), CRT(R)(F) has been an active radiographer for over 35 years. He has been employed as a Staff Technologist at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) in Monterey, California since 1990 and was the Clinical Instructor until 2014. With a digital dosimeter and a vast array of body phantoms, Dennis has put in hundreds of hours researching and studying digital techniques. In addition to the weekly classes he gives his students, Dennis has travelled internationally lecturing on how best to use and critique digital radiography. Because Dennis still is a "shooting tech" and CI, he truly understands all the problems techs run into and has figured out a fun and lighthearted way to explain it.

Finally somebody is talking about real positioning issues

I have taught for many years and much of what is in this book has been informally talked about in my positioning classes. This text formally presents these positioning issues and then explains why things are this way. There are very clear illustrations to demonstrate these principles as well. I expect this book to be a very welcome addition for radiography instructors and I plan to add it to my required textbooks this fall. Great job!

Tight spaces, uncooperative patients, NO PROBLEM! The image critique was a greater refresher. The only problem I had is the binder started breaking down and the pages was loosing up

Needs work

Has a lot of great tips, however the book suffers from poor organization and the index doesn't help much. There's good information in this book, but it is hard to find when you need it.

Severe trauma can make the simplest xray very difficult and there are some parts of the body that are completely omitted in this book or given a single sentence of attention. I hope this book addresses these issues in the next edition.

Barrett, who has written biographies of Caligula and Agrippina, here reconstructs the life of a noteworthy Roman historical figure about whom little direct information is available. Livia maintained a "deliberate reserve" throughout her life and was steadfastly committed to being the Emperor Augustus's wife. Much has been suggested about the influence she had on her husband during his tenure, and common belief holds that she deliberately poisoned his successors. Barrett counters the mostly negative attacks on her character, arguing that much of what has been said about her is spurious. As such, those responsible for documenting the imperial family, such as the historian Tacitus, get scrutinized. Barrett explores other facets of Livia's personality, such as her interest in horticulture and political patronage. The book presents the general politics of the time and highlights other key figures from imperial Rome. Surprisingly, Livia was highly regarded by the Roman Senate, as well as by other peers, who often commended her for her generosity. Barrett's work is probably denser and more detailed than would interest the average reader, but for those keenly interested in studying ancient Rome it comes as a welcome addition to the genre. Livia has left the building

LIVIA (First Lady of Imperial Rome)was just that. She was Augustus' wife and the mother of Tiberius and the grandmother of Caligula, Claudus, and Nero. As the first 'first lady' of the Imperial age she set the tone and pace of what would become the de-facto wife-of-an emperor (Augustus). No one had ever been in this position before. History has painted her as a murdering poisoner but author Anthony Barrett sets the gossip aside and plows right through the original sources teaching us why Tacitus and other primary sources were prejudiced against her and have handed down a tainted picture of her situation. Make no mistake, this was a hard book to read. It is real history by a real historian. But the effort really pays off if you are interested how Augustus and his wife virtually invented the politics that came to run the machinery started by Julius Caesar prior to his slaughter in the Senate House. I give it all 5 stars but caution that you should look elsewhere if you are just starting your adventure in reading about the glory that was Rome.

What Was Caesar Augustus' Wife, Livia, really like?

If there is a message in Anthony Barrett’s scholarly and impeccably researched tome on Caesar Augustus’s wife, Livia, it may be that even the best of historical fiction literature should be taken with a grain of salt. Robert Graves’ novels, I Claudius and Claudius the God are classics, but should not be taken at face value. If you want facts, consult an actual historian.
“If the general public has any impression of Livia, the wife of the first Roman emperor, Augustus, it is of the character created by the Welsh actress Sian Phillips in the highly acclaimed BBC-TV series production of I, Claudius, first broadcast in 1976. This popular confusion between the historical and the fictional is hardly surprising, given Phillip’s riveting performance. Cunning and sinister, her Livia devotes every waking hour to her consuming interests: plotting, scheming, conniving, and the cheerful eradication of an assorted variety of fellow citizens, be they strangers, friends, or even close family.
“One of the burdens shouldered by the modern historian is that of correcting false impressions created by the popular media, particularly dangerous when a production is distinguished and the performances brilliant.”
In my pseudo-autobiography, Sempronia, the Sister of the Gracchi, I have Sempronia opining “If ever you are about to be born and the gods grant you the decision as to whether you want to be born into the most illustrious family in Rome, or to some poor family who is just part of the head count, I strongly recommend that you choose the head count family.” Sempronia was referring to her illustrious family, the Scipios, but this advice would go double for someone contemplating being born into the family of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. The premature mortality among the members of this family is incredibly high.
But how much, if any of this was the doing of Augustus’ wife Livia? Anthony Barrett believes little or none. He dismisses the deaths Gaius and Lucius, the two elder sons of Augustus’ daughter Julia and Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, as a war casualty and a natural death respectively. The death of the third son, Postumus Agrippa, is clearly murder. It occurred upon the heels of Augustus’s death, and was no doubt upon the order of someone high up in the power structure, but Barrett feels that there is not enough evidence to pin it on Livia.
Barrett sees no evidence of foul play in the deaths of Octavia’s son Marcellus, or in the death of Tiberius’ brother Drusus. Germanicus, the son of Drusus, clearly thought he had been poisoned and said so before he died. Some pin the blame upon Plancina, the wife of Germanicus’ rival, Calpurnius Piso, who was a close friend of Livia. Again, Barrett feels that there is not enough evident to implicate Livia.
Barrett blames the death of Tiberius’ son Drusus on his wife Livilla and her paramour Sejanus. He claims that Livia protected the lives of Germanicus’ widow Agrippina and her sons Nero and Drusus while she lived, and it was only after Livia’s death that they fell prey to the machinations of the scheming Sejanus.
It is entirely possible that Livia exerted a moderating influence upon both her husband Augustus and her son Tiberius. It has been noted that as a young man, Octavian was bloodthirsty but became far less so after he consolidate his power. Might this have been somewhat due to Livia’s influence? Conversely, Tiberius seems to have become more murderous after Livia died. Barrett presents a lot of anecdotal evidence of Livia interceding on the behalf of Romans who had fallen out of favor with the Emperors, both Augustus and Tiberius.
Barrett’s book is not for the casual reader. It is a scholarly and heavily detailed tome of which nearly half the pages are appendices and footnotes. The reader must be motivated to plow through it, but one will find some fascinating information about the Julio-Claudian family and the Roman empire of that period of time.

Exhaustive research

I've wavered between a two and three star rating for Livia: First Lady of Imperial Rome by Anthony A. Barrett. Finally, on account of his exhaustive research I've come down on a three star rating.

Apparently there is not much in the way of hard evidence as to Livia's personality or actions. Barrett makes it very clear that historians Tacitus', Seneca and Suetonius et als are torn, and conflicting in their portrayal of Livia. The former being the most acid and hostile to Livia.

Barrett begins his biography by devoting paragraphs to speaking of Robert Graves' portrayal of Livia in I, Claudius and Claudius the God, including the BBC filming of same. He states (correctly) that Sian Phillips's portrayal of Livia was so strong, it has taken over popular opinion as the "real" Livia. There is a great deal of truth in what he says. However as far as I am concerned, Barrett has done very little to counteract that picture.

He states time after time (ad nauseam) that there is no verifiable proof of Livia being a poisoner as stated in Graves books. Every step of the way though, Barrett backs up the verifiable events as seen in Graves work. There is nothing to counteract those assumptions of being a poisoner. And, I hasten to admit, as far as I can tell, they are assumptions. We have no forensic proof that Livia poisoned the ones she was accused of poisoning in Graves books. As Barrett presents her Livia did in fact, have motive and opportunity to commit those crimes that she has been accused of.

Livia is presented by Barrett as being the epitome of Roman Womanhood, an example to be followed in every way. Loyal, and doing everything possible to support her husband. Let us also remember that Octavian/Augustus ran roughshod over many to become Emperor, and was politically savvy and an opportunist.

"One of the burdens shouldered by the modern historian is that of correcting false impressions created by the popular media, particularly dangerous when a production is distinguished and the performances brilliant. This process usually involves the thankless task of demonstrating pedantically that, contrary to popular belief, truth is rarely stranger than fiction, and is usually far less exciting."

Barrett seems to have shot himself in the foot in my view, as he doesn't prove anything, and is far too repetitive, and far too (his word) pedantic.

In fact, as far as I am concerned, methinks the historian doth protest too much.
