Explosive Veer Offense

Best book on the split back veer that I have read (I haven't read Bill Yoeman's book on the veer yet). The book has an interesting method of line calls which provides food for thought however it's detailed explanation of the outside veer and their version of the counter option (which is different from the traditional version of the counter option).

Well-written, but huh?

The "Change" novels (as opposed to the "Islands" novels) have always been a little questionable to me. At times, they are incredibly enjoyable (the first couple especially), but the last few haven't impressed me as much. The impending building of a sense of magic hasn't really sat well with me. It's an interesting transition from science fiction (with a funky premise) to ever more high fantasy. I've seen books go the other way, but never really this direction. It just hasn't worked for me.

With that said, the writing in Lord of Mountains continues to be very tight and on point (as all of Stirling's work), but I just didn't get the goal of the story in this one. We start right in the middle of the great battle, but there isn't really a sense of concern. There's not the slightest bit of worry here that Rudi and his team (basically every culture we've seen in the course of this series except three) might lose. There's no tension and a lack of tension means a lack of drama.

This book almost felt like an epilogue or coda, rather than a complete story. The climax of the great battle occurs and then things start wrapping up and I had to look at the page count. I couldn't believe we were on the downhill slope of the story. The book hadn't felt like it had gotten a plot going.

I wonder if the last book was too long and this is where they decided to chop it? Because Lord of Mountains really didn't feel like a stand-alone book to me. It felt like wrapping up loose ends to the series without a real plot in place.

We met several new characters in the book, and yet, nothing is done with them! Two young squires are developed as characters, but they don't have any kind of actual arc. We meet them. They bond. They have a small adventure, and then they provide some color commentary on the big battle.

Stirling himself even comments in this book about the difficulty of writing the book. One of the characters thinks, "She tried to imagine an epic about being High King rather than becoming High King...You'd have to concentrate on his companions or something. And skip a lot of the meetings and reports."

I think Stirling discovered that the end of the story of Rudi and his band just wasn't that interesting, but he had to put out something. This is that something and I wasn't impressed.

I'm sure that anyone who's been reading the series is going to get this book anyways, but if you are on the fence, then don't really bother. You aren't missing much.

Better than the last one I guess

I was once a huge fan of the Change series. A few years ago I could not wait for the first of September so that I could get plunged back into the unique postapocalyptic work that Stirling has created. That being said, I bought this book out of sheer obligation rather then actual desire. The last book in the series (Tears of the Sun)was such a dull, plodding bore that it sucked away the enthusiasm that I had felt for this series and directed it towards other authors.
While Stirling is still a great writer he has allowed himself to waste his prose on describing Protectorate party dress, McKenzie eating habits and walks through meadows instead of driving a story, developing characters or surprising his readers. These bad habits, which are latent in all Stirling novels, reached their apogee in the last book where we had four hundred pages of describing largly unimportant characters, places and events prior to the novel abruptly ending before the climax. This novel is mostly about that climax and as such is better than its predecessor though they really should have been one book.
The book started out weak (another Protectorate dinner party, if I have to read the terms parti colored hose or houppe lande one more time I may just go crazy) but got stronger as we actually had some action and plot movement. Unfortunently, the pacing just does not work when you have a book that is basically the climax for the last book and after the big battle that this entire series has been building up to is finished we are treated to another hundred pages of mostly inconsequential filler that we have already been told until this tome finally whimpers to a close with many plot elements unresolved.
Like Tears of the Sun, Lord of the Mountains suffers from major pacing flaws but since something actually happens in it I give it a mediocre score. I should also note that the later Change books as a whole have become infused with a plodding predictability in things both large and small. For the most part there are no real twists or surprises to keep the reader on their toes or excited to get to the next chapter. Even in small elements of narration a predictable pattern has become so ingraned that you find yourself skimming through pages and pages because you already know what will happen, often nothing. A quick example (and personal pet peeve); if a character has the slightest of doubts about their faith they will become a Wiccan within several chapters of meeting a McKenzie. Stirling needs to change things up if he wishes to keep my interest as a reader.

Not Good! Save your $

I read all the previous books in this series and liked them. I am so disappointed in this one that I hope there are no others! Rather than an action filled story that stimulated my imagination, I bought a rambling story filled with trivia about medieval dress and customs that I am not interested in. I paid top dollar for this book and didn't get what I expected. I read to the 90% mark and just stopped. I don't care what happens to these characters. Sterling took my money and did not deliver.

You see yourself in the pages of this book. This book is very practical very short read. Reminds you of why you started on this journey of being an entrepreneur. When you start reading the book you have an excitement to finish it.

When I first heard of Robert Hollis was in August of 2012. I was impressed with his "Getting Unstuck Free Videos" I was inspired to pursue my goal even more.

I myself at the time was struggling. As I done the research on Robert Hollis.

I felt safe being one of his students. Also I enrolled in his course. In which has enhanced the learning even more. This book is a condensed version of history with golden nuggets of how and why you should never give up on you.

Well written and easy to read, yet packed with truth and a love of people

This book is really Robert Hollis, his life and his proven method to help so many others. Robert has learned to take himself from a disabled auto mechanic to a mulit-millionare. So what's left? Robert decided to teach others how to do it too! He remains friends with many he taught and can document ay lease 44 people that reached that goal. He has a way to see the road blocks we all face and help us find our way to run right past them. No matter how fast you read, in minutes you will begin to grow and in hours you will know you always wanted a friend like Robert Hollis.

school rules

Book is crap and I only got it because it was course required text. Get the earlier edition, all the content is the same and you can learn to use Anasys by googling and playing around with the program. This book only shows how to use ADPL and none of the other modules.

Cernovich never fails to impress

I first read "Gorilla Mindset" by Mike a few months ago. I knew "Danger & Play" existed but I waited until it came out in paper pack before I bought it.
I wish I would have purchased it digitally once I was done with "Gorilla Mindset". I feel like I missed out on a few weeks of living with an extra edge. Mike is straight forward and to the point with his writing. I have read other remarks about it being short. Thats BS. If the info is impactful it doesn't have to be as long as "Atlas Shrugged". I have taken the different thoughts on MINDSET and have installed many of them into my own life. Mike has made a positive impact on my life and for that I am grateful. I will continue to read his writing and listen to his podcast as long as our visions and mindsets align. Since reading I have started a business, worked on the things I need to get a podcast going, and have started to grow my personal brand. Its not easy, but with the right mindset,....I will look back at it all and laugh that I thought it was hard.

Beastly book, offering solid advice and brutal honesty.

Danger and Play is a collection of articles from Mike Cernovich's Blog with the same name. It focuses on Masculinity, as the title suggests.

Overall, I liked the approach of the book, it starts off hard and fast; Mike writes in a disgustingly arrogant manner on what types of behaviours he views to be masculine and feminine, and chastizes men who complain instead of do, who feel entitled to get what they want instead of working for it. Reading it made me feel a bit inadequate, in a good way. Its as though something in me sensed this was the type of un-apologetic, brash advice and criticism I needed to know what i need to work on in order to feel more confident as a man.

After the blazing intro, he starts tackling subjects like money, fitness, relationships and of course Mike's specialty: Mindset. Your going to get something out of this book.

The tone of the book changes considerably based on the topic Mike is writing about. The profound depth and beauty of the subject matter written in the final section titled "Motivation and Inspiration" is difficult for me to describe.It's sort of startling when you compare the content of the first segment which come off as sort of "Intelligent and Intense Frat Boy" to "Conscientious Motivator and Philosopher." To illustrate, there's an article where Mike details a grisly personal struggle he had to overcome, listing his doubts and insecurities before resolving to push past them and conquering the ordeal. The article moved me to tears. It's a powerful gesture when a strong person reveals their shortcomings and weaknesses; they in turn help you realize that they're not much different than you. It's motivating.

It's a powerful book. Grab it.

Great Compilation

I have been a long time reader of Danger and Play and a Big fan of Mike. I love this book as it is a compilation of Mike's Best blog posts on various topics such as life, health, women, etc. This is a book for those who are not pussies and have thick skin, i.e. men only. This will make you into a masculine man if followed through and I highly recommend it to everyone on the path to reclaiming their masculine self.

I do have a suggestion for Mike in regards to the format/editing of the book. For some articles it is clearly copied and pasted from the website and it says that on the book as well so I would edit it for the book. It would also help to add some pics for at least some of the pages as for example one of the pages you said about not smiling too much and on the blog you put a pic of your face looking badass and you don't have that on the book., "but you still title it "does this face look like a dork to you" but no pic. so it makes it confusing to the reader when he sees no pic but with that caption on there.

Overall a fan and love this book man!

Excellent - 5 Stars

Pedigree is a thought provoking case study into hiring practices of what the author terms Elite Professional Services firms (EPS). From the viewpoint of someone interested in inequality, Rivera explains how choices in target campuses, interview structure (fit, polish), and choice to use revenue-generating staff to interview (vs HR) stack the deck against non traditional candidates. Alternatively, for a jobseeker, Pedigree is an amazing insight because it informs about systemic biases and specific techniques to overcome them. Despite having prepared extensively for a summer internship interview at an EPS, this guide provided much deeper understanding about the interview evaluation and hiring committee process. Finally, I was impressed with the quality of the research methodology (hands-on research, inductive coding, accounting for author's own background). I highly recommend Pedigree for people interested in equitable and effective hiring practices and MBA/law school students seeking EPS jobs.

Nothing new, but an interesting read!

I'm not sure what to make of "Pedigree"'s marketing campaign. The book certainly has received a lot of hype, most provocatively in the Economist (headline: "How to join the 1%"). I'm baffled, however, that Amazon is promoting "Pedigree" as "vocational guidance."

"Pedigree" is not a "how-to" guide for joining elite firms. (Again, I'm not exactly sure why it's being promoted as such.) Rather, the book is an easy-to-read text that details/gives an overview of Rivera's research on hiring practices at a few investment banking, consulting and law firms. The insight the book offers is certainly not new for anyone familiar with these industries, but Rivera (heavily influenced by Bourdieu) offers a succinct, beautifully written sociological analysis of a world that is foreign to many -- and one that has not received much attention from academics.

I found the book a pleasure to read, though I found Rivera's analysis slightly repetitive and her presentation of nontraditional candidates who succeeded in accepting offers (chapter 10) lacking. I do look forward, however, to following her work in the future, and I am impressed by her life story (from a single-parent home in L.A. to Yale to Northwestern's Kellogg). Overall, this is a great read for scholars/professionals/laypeople who are interested in exploring the state of our "meritocracy" and are excited by the growing publication of "popular" books about American educational inequality ("Our Kids;" "Privilege;" etc).

Sheds new light on the gatekeepers of the 1%

A thought-provoking, well-researched analysis of the entry-level hiring process at the most elite employers in finance, law and business consulting -- one might even call them "the gatekeepers of the 1%." My husband and I are both part of the world described here (he in consulting and me in law), as we both managed to gate-crash our way in from non-elite family backgrounds. Having done our share of hiring committee work, we can vouch for a lot of the picture painted here.* However, the book's value derives not from the care taken in accurately describing the hiring process, but from the new light the author throws on the subject, even for those already familiar with this world.

Rivera has done society a service by illuminating the unspoken norms against which all applicants to these top employers are judged. These norms, like the need to show participation in a team sport (or similar significant time commitment in a familiar group activity), or the ability to seize and hold the floor in a conversation about serious subjects, are unremarkable features of upper class life. However, they are not the natural outcomes of being raised in a poor family, and outside of attending a boarding school on a scholarship, there is nowhere you can go to learn them. So, although none of these norms overtly discriminate against applicants who are not rich, white Anglo-Saxons (though there are incidents of blatantly illegal discriminatory acts in the book too), their net effect is to largely screen out people whose lives do not resemble those of the wealthy. The book is worth reading in order to see this process in action, or for would-be applicants, even to structure your college years and take other non-obvious steps in preparation.

*In terms of the particulars, in my experience, the picture for applicants from non-elite law schools is not as dire as described here. At both of the white-shoe firms where I worked, new associates were from a range of law schools in the top 50, plus local ones (though you still had to be in the top of your class outside of the elite schools). Of course, this was in Atlanta, not in NYC, so it is possible that the top dog firms in NYC only look at a few law schools.

MOSTLY USELESS!!!

I am heartily disappointed!!!

I am surprised by the positive reviews about this book. I find very little about it easy to use. There are some fatal flaws to the organization of this text that make it practically useless for students and practicing nurses. I purchased this book at Barnes & Noble after looking at it for a bit. I saw two sections which led me to believe the book would be more useful that it really is. OVERVIEW OF THE NURSING PROCESS in the preface is top notch. It explains how nursing diagnosis fits into the nursing process. Appendix A Selected Nursing Diagnoses by Medical Diagnosis APPEARS AT A QUICK GLANCE to be useful. However, none of the nursing diagnoses listed under each of the medical diagnoses are accompanied by page numbers which tell the reader where in the book to find the explanatory information for that nursing diagnosis. To make it worse, many of the nursing diagnoses listed in Appendix A are not listed as stated in the Index making it impossible to quickly find the relevant page for the desired nursing diagnosis. The Table of Contents is no help finding a specific nursing diagnosis explanatory material. The TOC lists 8 main sections (Adult Health, Adolescent Health, Child Health, Maternal-Neonatal Health, Geriatric Health, Psychiatric and Mental Health, Community-Based Health, and Wellness) without listing what nursing diagnoses are contained in each section. The reader has no way to find a specific diagnosis without paging through entire sections which MAY contain the diagnosis of interest. What idiot has time to page through entire sections of a book to find one or two diagnoses???!!!

In my opinion, the organizational structure of the text is totally inappropriate. Nursing diagnoses are intended to diagnose human responses to disease. The organization should center around functional problems and disease rather than populations. Are you telling me that only older adults can have fluid overload and not adults or children? The indexing of this text is wholly inadequate making it practically useless to anyone who has a time deadline (like students and practicing nurses)

If you manage to find the diagnosis you're interested in, you're in luck!!! The information given for each nursing diagnosis looks very useful.

In short, parts of the text look great, but GOOD LUCK FINDING WHAT YOU NEED!!! My advice...go to Barnes & Noble and read the preface then buy another book.

Not simple to follow for beginners

This book was the recommended one for writing our care plans. It's not easy to align the goals to interventions. I'm ordering the Gulanick version and will use both to cross check.

AWESOME book for clinical and HW assignments in nursing school

I totally LOVE this book! It is so helpful in writing care plans and is laid out so nicely! This was not recommended to us nursing students to purchase but another nursing student in my class purchased it, which is how I became aware of it. It's worth every dime and has helped a lot in clinical and HW assignments. A MUST HAVE for every nursing student!

The last surviving victim of an experiment that implanted the subjects' heads with electrodes that decipher coded messages is the unnamed narrator of this excellent book by Murakami, one of Japan's best-selling novelists and winner of the prestigious Tanizaki prize. Half the chapters are set in Tokyo, where the narrator negotiates underground worlds populated by INKlings, dodges opponents of both sides of a raging high-tech infowar, and engages in an affair with a beautiful librarian with a gargantuan appetite. In alternating chapters he tries to reunite with his mind and his shadow, from which he has been severed by the grim, dark "replacement" consciousness implanted in him by a dotty neurophysiologist. Both worlds share the unearthly theme of unicorn skulls that moan and glow. Murakami's fast-paced style, full of hip internationalism, slangy allegory, and intrigue, has been adroitly translated. Winner of the Tanizaki Literary prize (the Japanese equivalent of the Pulitzer), by acclaimed young Japanese novelist Murakami: a stunning combination of the contemporary and brash with elegiac allegory, all topped off by a strong measure of cyberpunk. The ``hard-boiled'' hero, 35 and divorced, is a man of possessions--a collection of imported whiskeys; interests--old American movies and cooking; but no emotions. Which, coupled with his brilliant work on computers, makes him the ideal candidate for a mysterious aging scientist holed up under the sewers of Tokyo. Here, protected by a waterfall and by flesh-devouring creatures, the INKlings, from the two competing information organizations that control everything in the country, the scientist has devised a perfect secret code by operating on the brains of selected computer workers. The hero, summoned to the scientist's lair, is presented with a unicorn's skull and told of a project called ``The End of the World.'' Alternating between these encounters with the scientist, the scientist's granddaughter, and bully-boys bent on finding out what he knows, there is the story of the ancient walled town at the end of the world. In this home of one-horned beasts, a young man arrives, is separated from his shadow, and is set to work interpreting the dreams of the skulls in the library. The two worlds increasingly connect and at the end fuse, with the hero, though certifiably dead, for the first time morally and emotionally alive and resistant to the society's pervasive control of the individual. One of the best books I've ever bought on a whim...

I purchased this book on a whim - the descriptions sounded interesting enough to merit a look.
Boy was I stunned by it. One of the best books I've read in a long time and probably one of the best novels I've read that's been written in the last 20 years.
Beautifully written (and translated) it spoke to many different sides of me. The novel brilliantly fuses a number of different cultural genres (science fiction, mystery, film noir, fantasy, magical realism, "cyberpunk") into a mix that, amazingly, works very well. Try to imagine a collaborative effort by Garcia-Marquez, William Gibson, and Walker Percy and you almost might be able to envision what this book feels like to read. Who else but a Japanese author could make such an intriguing pop culture cocktail?
Besides being a genre-bender, the premise of the book and the questions that it raises concerning the relationship between humanity and technology, the soul and the mind, and the individual and society are quite thought provoking.
Did I mention that the book is very funny at times too?
This is unlike any other book you'll ever read. Definitely worth checking out IMHO.

The Interconnectedness of All Things

This is simply the best book I have ever read! I was hooked from the first page and drawn into the world of the narrator as subtly as one is drawn into a dream. The linking of the subconscious and conscious elements of the mind are at work here, and this is what makes this book all at once so wonderful, disturbing and enlightening. It is a psychological masterpiece and lays bare the interconnectedness of all things- the people in our lives, the places, the choices we make, our dreams, desires, longings and regrets and most importantly, the often inexplicable and enigmatic relationship between our subconscious and conscious mind. The masterful way Murakami interweaves the chapters begins with a divergent simplicity and gradually progresses to a complex, synchronistic web/mandala in which all points share a beginning yet have no end.

WHICH WORLD DO I BELONG TO?

Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World follows two distinct and parallel storylines, both with unnamed narrators who might or might not be the same person. In the first storyline, the narrator is a "Calcutec", a computer specialist working for "The System" to protect data against the "Semiotecs", an organization of powerful black market information pirates. Called down into the sewers below Tokyo against regulations and against the law, the main character agrees to "shuffle", or encode the work of a nutty professor who says he has discovered a way to make bones talk! His life might be in danger though because all the major powers want a piece of this new technology. This plotline alternates chapters with a more fantasy type idyll about a town surrounded by an impenetrable and unscalable wall, in which the narrator tries to figure out who he is and how he came there. There are other inhabitants but all their comments are pretty cryptic. But there's some bizarre stuff going on. For example, there are unicorns grazing around the town, you lose your shadow, and the narrator is given the job of "reading dreams" from the skulls of strange beasts! He must set about figuring out how to escape unless he wants to be trapped there forever.

This novel was weird but refreshing. I thought it was pretty clever of Murakami to almost write two books in one, the first being a cyberpunk adventure and the other a strange surreal fantasy. But it worked. Don't worry, these two stories within a novel do have a purpose in being joined together, even though you might not understand all the "physics" talk when explanations are given. You get the gist of it. Harold Bloom once said that what gives a novel its lasting greatness is that it has to be strange. Murakami more than lives up to this thought and makes you feel as if you've entered a new world. That's a good thing. It really gives you a sense of wonder and mental adventure which you don't find too often in literature these days. I look forward to reading his other works.

If you liked this book, I would highly recommend viewing a Japanese anime called Haibane-Renmei which was greatly influenced by the fantasy parts of Hard-Boiled Wonderland.
