Hi Guys. Just to make it clear, this is the second edition of Options Plain and Simple, which has been a classic for many years. This edition is easier to get through because I have substituted decimals for fractions. Also, I have added market stories, for two reasons:

1) to liven up a technical book

2) to give you real market examples of how these technicals apply.

The fundamentals in both books are identical. So if you've read OPS and you've worked in the markets, then you know it. But if you're just starting out, then FTGO is the better read-through.

This summer I lectured at BoAML. I'm advising Currency Solutions, London, on setting up an options desk. I'm working on a war stories book based on my experiences as a trader. I'm setting up a mini hedge fund.

Excellent

Lenny Jordan has written an excellent book. His writing is clear and understandable and allows the reader to readily access his deep knowledge of the subject. The end of chapter questions and answers are thorough and help the reader to operationalize the concepts presented. His reference list is well considered and helps the reader to gain a deeper context of the subject. Index and glossary are thorough and useful. Overall the book is excellent and I will be on the lookout for more books from the author.

The Financial Times Guide to Options is a major overhaul of Options Plain and Simple: OPS, as most traders know, was considered to be the bible of the industry.

In FTGO I include new products and new trading ideas. All the fractions have been converted to decimals, making it much easier to get through.

But most important, I've added market scenarios: How I or my clients made or lost money: real and often big money. You will learn from our successes, and you will learn from our mistakes. You will profit from our experience.

Make money and manage risk: these were the fundamental concepts of OPS, and now they're applied to FTGO.

Lastly, this book is a user's guide, just like OPS. It's not rocket science. It is practical advice from a veteran.

The best just got better.

Fantastic, Amazing Coaching Book with Incredible amount of Content!!

I also have the FC Barcelona: A Tactical Analysis Attacking and Defending Books which are fantastic if you want the full tactical blueprint of what I believe is the best club side to play the game. Those books analyse each phase of the game and every conceivable game situation. I cannot fathom how long it must have taken to produce these books with so much detail.

I was so happy when this book (FC Barcelona Training Sessions - 160 Practices from 34 Tactical Situations) was released because I really wanted full sessions to go along with the analysis. I was not disappointed as this book contains some of the finest practices and progressive sessions I have ever seen. The amount of content provides great value for money and this book really is a must have for any coach.

The sessions begin with the technical breakdown of Barca's play and progress to new and innovative possession games, transition games and small sided games. Each session focuses on a specific phase of play and game situation, such as RECEIVING IN BEHIND THE MIDFIELD LINE AND APPROACHING THE THIRD STAGE OF ATTACK and RETAINING BALANCE DURING THE ATTACKING PHASE: THE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER’S ROLE.

What I find most incredible about this book is that it teaches the technical side of the game so well, but also covers every tactical situation you can think of and teaches you about team shape, cohesion at all times to prepare for the transition phase and each player's role and responsibilities.

To have all this information in one book (every phase including the transition phase) means you have a complete training program for your team in the mold of Guardiola's great side.

One of the best coaching books ever!

The authors previous books; "FC Barcelona: A Tactical Analysis - Attacking and Defending" provides full extensive analysis of FCB pattern of plays in all 4 phases of the game, the detail is incredible.

With this sequel book, the author has taken FC Barcelona's most common 34 tactical game situations (pattern of plays that happened a lot and FCB main characteristics in their style of play) and follows a full session on how to practice it.

The analysis is presented very well which is easy to understand and follow. What makes this book so great is the sessions that follow then game situations are presented with clear diagrams and each drill is progressive with many variations.

My chosen heading may seem like a big statement but its true, it's most definitely a 5* book but don't just take my word for it...

It has just been awarded "Best book for Technical category for 2014" its a Literary Award “Antonio Ghirelli”, organized by the Italian Football Association.

They used a precise definition, studied integration's impact on organization performance, and explored a subset of the factors that lead to integration. They defined integration as the "state of collaboration that exists among departments that are required to achieve unity of effort." and measured it by asking people to rate the state of interdepartmental relations on a seven-point scale going from "serious problems exist" to "full unity of effort is obtained". They used the term differentiation to refer to different departments having different structures and orientations (e.g. short versus long-term time orientation, relationship versus task focus, and high versus low formality of structure). A key finding of their research was that although organizational integration and differentiation were usually inversely proportional to each other, the most successful organizations simultaneously achieved high levels of both. Prior to Lawrence and Lorsch, organizational experts generally believed that issuing orders from above was adequate to achieve organizational integration. In contrast, Lawrence and Lorsch believed that integration required resolution of conflicts between departments through the efforts of teams and individual managers working both inside and outside of formal channels. These "integrators" need to be in the middle of the organization, and not simply at the top. Factors leading to effective integration included having an orientation that was intermediate between those of the departments being integrated, high influence based on competence and knowledge, and integrators being rewarded for achieving effective unified solutions. Moreover, high performing organizations resolved conflicts at the level in the organization where the knowledge (competence) needed to find a good solution existed. For organizations in stable environments this tends to be high in the organization, while for organizations in rapidly changing environments it tends to be lower down. High performing organizations confronted differences in perspectives in an open problem solving manner, rather than immediately finding a compromise, or trying to smooth over conflict, or referring the issue to a higher level for decision. Lawrence and Lorsch's recognition of the importance of organizational integration and its dependence on the work of "integrators" was a major step in our understanding of organizational effectiveness. The primary weakness in their work is that it focuses overwhelmingly on only one organizational integrating mechanism, namely the use "integrators" to resolve interdepartmental conflict.

An excellent approach to the Namibian Culture

After reading it, I felt that I had just left Namibia. I could even visualize the places which the author was talking about. The impression that I had was that I was there at Dune 7 searching for the treasure with Janet and Karl. The story is awesome. It is impossible not to fall in love with it. The perfect mix of culture and love story. And, why not suspense? I do not want to play the spoiler role here, but the story has a surprising and an amazing end! Ms. Cristiane Krumenauer gave a great contribution to the Herero people and all the peoples that comprise the Land of the Brave - Namibia. Congratulations!

Fundamental Book, but should be last read

This book is written in the way creator Bjarne Stroustrup sees his language and how his language should be used. This book is not thin on material for the intermediate to advanced C++ software engineer.
One word in warning to potential buyers: You better be sharp with your STL skills before reading this book. Stroustrup writes his implementations around the STL which is not covered from a tutorial style in this book before he introduces it, which tells you that he meant for this book strictly as a reference not as a readers book. This critism is constructive, not disruptive, but I have been programming in standard ANSI/ISO C++ for 9 years, this book is best understood if you read the following first, if not, this book for even an itermediate C++ program cannot be digested to the fullest and you will reading this book fooling yourself of how much knowledge you have attained, when in reality, all that you have accomplished is reading this book so that you can say that you read Stroustrup, which is foolish, so read these first:
1) C++ Primer 3rd Edition: Stanley Lippman Addison Wesley Books Strengths: If you are starting out with C++ with no C++ experience, this book covers every facet beginner to advanced topics, such as fundamental classes, class design covering nested class and intense class scoping rules, which Stroustrups book does not cover, there is no reference to nested classes and access privileges with nested classes with Stroustrup's book. The chapters on function templates and another chapter on class templates are the most complete and thorough beyound what you need to know for richness is explained brilliantly and better than scant coverage in Stroustrup's. The C++ Primer is long though, so if you want to learn C++ the right way, skills like this take time and effort, there is no free lunches here, but this is regarded as the best C++ book regardless of level: starter, intermediate, or very advanced master. It also serves a robust reference. This books covers the STL containers well in its own chapter and also two chapter on all the STL algoritms, plus an extended alphabetically ordered repitition in type out of the book and compile form. This book is not for the faint hearted or lazy, if you are ambitious, this book will make you a C++ king. Also get its companion C++ Answer book with all answers to the books exercise questions from author Clovis L. Tondo, also an Addison Wesley title.
2) C++ Algorithms 3rd Edition by Robert Sedgewick also Addison Wesley books. Why? You seriouly have to know your date structure skills, linked lists, stacks, trees, queues and its accompanying algoritms, such as: searching and sorting, merging and merge sorting. Stroustrups books assumes you know how these all come together, if you do not believe this, then look at his stark and algorithmically complex data structure examples, once this is read everything will be a piece of cake, believe this, do not fool yourself.
3) The C++ Standard Library Tutorial and Reference from Nicolai Josuttis, from Addison Wesley also, this book is the defacto bible on mastering the STL, which covers brilliant chapters on containers( vectors, lists, maps, sets, deques, and much more ). It also covers a huge chapter on standard IO streams, at least over 150 pages on this alone, as well a masterful chapter on STL strings. This should be read after Sedgewick's book. This book like all Addison Wesley books, is of the highest qualitiy and caliber of writing making it fun to read and plenty of type out of the book samples to bang in the concept. This books brilliantly also tutors you in function objects, iterators and all its variants, and STL algorithms.
Last Word: Stroustrups book is definite worth in purchase and you cannot consider yourself a C++ software engineer, or C++ Software/Systems architect without having this book in your library, but patience and read books 1,2, and three first in that order. And wheh you do the above, and are ready to read Stroustup's book, one reminder, you must know your templates, know your templates, know your templates, also get the accompanying answer book, C++ Solutions, by Vandervoode also an Addison Wesley title.

Are You Experienced?

Bjarne Stroustrup's THE C++ PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE is ideal for those potential buyers who already know 75% of what is written in the book. But please note that this is not necessarily a put-down or a bad thing. This book is reference material for people who are already familiar with the concepts and syntax of C++. If you're looking to learn C++ from scratch, then run far and run quickly away from this book. On the other hand, if you're an experienced coder who's looking to remember specific details, or an intermediate who's looking for some nitty-gritty information, then this is a highly recommended reference book.
The writing is meticulous and often obscure. But Stroustrup packs in a lot of detail into every page. The example code is short and to the point. He assumes that if you don't get what he's talking about the first time, then further examples aren't going to help; and most of the time this assumption is justified, as his terse code manages to convey everything that it needs to.
You really do need to have experience with C++ to understand a lot of his examples though, as often he will casually mention a concept or function that he won't get around to defining for another few hundred pages. After all, most of the features in C++ interact heavily with other functions, so it's not really possible to explain some things without explaining their relationships (even if they are relating to things that the text has not yet brought up). But, as I said, this is reference material, and such conventions are allowable and, at times, encouraged. I am much happier with a book like this that gives me all of the detail necessary than an introductory book that would only offer simplistic explanations in the beginning while holding out for the details towards the end.
The book covers virtually every major aspect of the C++ programming language. While everything is richly explained, I find the sections on the standard containers and their iterators to be particularly enlightening. There is a lot of overlap inherent in these concepts, but each individual portion is clearly and unambiguously explained. The sections on pointers, classes, and inheritance are similarly helpful. But, to be honest, there is no reason for me to list everything that the book explains, because it literally contains everything; if it's not in the book, then in all likelihood it's not in the language either.
THE C++ PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE is a dense book and is packed to the gills with invaluable information and a fair bit of insight. As the inventor of the C++ language itself, Stroustrup is the closest person to the actual syntax, and short of reading the ISO spec, you simply won't find a more comprehensive tome on the subject. Good Reference, But Some Mistakes

I have had the Special Edition sitting on my shelf for the past 10 years. I have always relished it, just like K&R's "The C Programming Language". Even though I don't program in either language on a day-to-day basis, I find their contents invaluable examples of how to stay in-touch with the machine.

Bjarne went all out and rewrote a good bit of this book, reusing some examples from the previous editions. I have been seeing entirely new and revised examples for the most part. I particularly like how he broke up some of the longer chapters from previous editions into more manageable parts. My only disappointment with this book are the little mistakes. Someone familiar with C++ should understand the intent, but it may confuse some. This book adds a LOT of new content and reorganized a lot of the previous content, so mistakes are understandable.

This book makes an excellent reference. I have already used it extensively to upgrade a personal project to C++11. This has been essential for replacing Boost libraries with the new standard library. If you are trying to play catch-up (like myself) it's definitely worth it. It explains move semantics, variadic templates, the new memory model and many of the new language features.

As with previous editions, not only is a good book for learning C++... it teaches a lot about good programming in general.

Not the last word

This book which skates quickly over thin ice, is not the reference that you should be depending on when preparing for a disaster. It is probably not even the book you should be consulting when disaster is about to strike. To my mind it is more the kind of publication that will provide 105 topics to discuss around a campfire while reviewing the sorts of extended preparations that should be made by people living in a zone known to be prone to one kind of natural disaster or another. With just a few hundred words devoted to each scenario, this is no in-depth primer, but it could be a useful aide-memoire or conversation starter from which to begin

This is just a rehash of the content in The Ultimate Survival Manual from the same folks at Outdoor Life.
Nice to have the specifics for disaster survival consolidated into a smaller manual, but it is really better to just spend the money on the Ultimate Survival Manual and forget this one.

Get ready for disaster!

This new book from the editors of Outdoor Life is really neat. As someone who likes to be prepared and the daughter of an Eagle Scout, it's a great little handbook of some of the most common disasters. I really liked the first couple of articles about BOBs ("bug-out" bag). They include a list of what you should have in your emergency bag. Then the book proceeds to go through a little bit of first aid, and here's where I have my one qualm. Obviously some situations are so bad that medical attention is required, for things like fourth degree burns, but the book could explicate a little more into how to deal with these injuries if medical attention is not available. The book also misses out with arterial bleeding here. And although we may never have to deal with such things, the knowledge may come in handy some day. Otherwise, the book is really informative with great diagrams. The rest of the book goes through common natural disasters and also some useful things to know, like how to siphon fuel if need be. And it is a nice size to store with your BOB bag for reference!

An unabashed advanced GIS textbook

I'm not your average GISer. I have a BS in Mathematics and worked for 15 years as a software developer. This book was a required text for the class in Advanced Vector GIS that was part of my MS in GIS. I currently use it as a reference as I work on my PhD in pure GIScience.

This book covers GIS data structures and databases in a way that a Computer Scientist would appreciate. It covers GIS algorithms in a way that an Applied Mathmetician would like. It covers GIS topology in a way that a Pure Mathmetician could learn from. It covers uncertainty in a way that a Statistician would enjoy.

If you are, say a graduate student in mathematics or computer science and want to understand what all the GIS hype is about, you've found a great, concise volume that covers an intense amount of information. If you are a geographer who needs to formalize some language concerning theory and methods for a publication, then this is a good start.

If you are looking for something like "how to delineate a watershed in ArcView 9", skip it and look elsewhere.

Excellent introductory book on GIS

Having read many books of the kind I can state with confidence that this one is the best introductory book on the topic. The authors claim that the book is best-suited to people approaching GISs with a computer-science perspective and/or background and this should be taken into consideration by all prospective buyers. However, the book should still be a most valuable resource to readers from other backgrounds, as it remains the most comprehensive in its domain, and is very readable thanks to the lucid writing style of the authors.

Each chapter except the first, which serves as a general introduction, deals with a particular sub-discipline within GIS. Chapter 2 describes the basics of databases.

Chapter 3 clarifies important topological and metric concepts.

Chapter 4 enters the area of field vs. object data models.

Chapter 5 deals with raster and vector structures as well as with computational geometry and geometric algorithms.

Chapter 6 moves even closer to the physical computer level and discusses indexes (access structures) and trees.

Chapter 7 is about architectures (distributed, homogeneous, heterogeneous systems).

Chapter 8 talks about GIS-interfaces.

Until that point, the book has a very logical structure with each chapter being the logical extension of the next.

Chapters 9 and 10 exist only in this second edition and provide some brief excursions into the topics of handling uncertainty and time in GIS respectively. They go into somewhat less detail than the previous chapters, yet are very well written.

Remember that this book is introductory, hence dont expect to learn the intricate details of topics such as databases and computational geometry. The authors manage however, to strike a fine balance between the amount of concepts and methods being presented and the degree of detail to which each of them is analysed. Therefore the book retains its clear introductory character while maintaining a very high informational content. In addition, the authors have done a fantastic job at compiling relevant bibliographies at the end of each chapter where the readers may pursue additional details should they wish to. The graphics and figures are also self-explanatory and do a fine job at complementing the text. Verbosity and typos are scarce if at all existent.

I recommend this book as the most comprehensive overview of, and a very good reference source for, GISs. It will be invaluable not only for newbies but also for mid to hi-level experts who wish to consolidate their knowledge or have a trusted reference. Undoubtedly, an indispensable resource in the library of anyone interested in geographic information systems.

I cannot comprehend the pain this MOTHER went through while fighting for the custody of a child that she carried for nine months!!! A vivid narration of a mother’s struggle dealing with a vindictive ex-husband, a corrupt and biased court system and dysfunctional in-laws. It is heart-wrenching to go through the journey with her as you read the memoir. Ostracized by the ex’s family she still rises above and continues to fight and live for her son. The injustices she endured in the corrupt court system are appalling!!! She persevered through it all!!! The story is touching, funny at times, sad and thought provoking. Kudos to her showing that a MOTHER NEVER GIVES UP!!! An amazing portrayal of a woman’s strength even when the world is crushing down. I highly recommend it. This is a great book for men and women in and out of relationships. Lesson: do not ignore little ‘red flags’!!! Where there is smoke…

Inspiring and beautifully written! This book is an easy read

Inspiring and beautifully written! This book is an easy read, brings laughter and tears, reminds us of the strength of women and mothers, the importance of family tradition, and living with integrity, respect, and love for one another. Loved it, could not put it down!

This is a great book for everyone who is married and looking to get married. It is also for parents, in-laws, siblings and people in the legal system representing Family Law. It covers a story of a mentally stable woman who crossed boarders to settle with her new husband in a foreign country. She takes us through the divorce struggles she endured alone (away from her family) and in the process lost her child in a corrupt legal system.

I stopped everything for the day to finish this book. I could not put it down! It is sad, yet funny and informative. I connected with author’s pain, cry, and anger for justice. Wow, what a way to release all that emotion in a form of a book!

Her story makes me beg the question whether there should be a screenings process to qualify the type of lawyers required to represent Family Law. It is the most emotional time for the parties involved. It is unfortunate that a few lawyers use this opportunity to enrich themselves instead of providing guidance and best care to their client and all those that are involved during this process.

My advice and the key things I take from reading this book is that, the background of people matter more than anything else when selecting our partner. It has to be the number one thing to consider, because we can never change their past experiences that make them who they are today. If you do not share similar values, or upbringing, conflicts are prone to arise. What is normal for you, is not necessarily Ok for your partner and vice versa. You can lose your identity trying to blow out fire left, right and center. Tell tell signs are always there…..God whispers he never fails to…the Universe will knock at our door, sometimes loud and sometimes it will feel like a cold breeze or chills. Let’s tune in to our inner self and listen to the guidance that exists within us. Trust, believe and honor the feelings and doubts that you have. This is how we can align ourselves to our soul’s purpose.

I hope the author finds the armor of God, the Universe and all that there is, to guide her, protect her, comfort her and find genuine love again. Eventually all things work together for the good. I send her Blessings!
