In 2011, Philip Zimbardo gave a TED Talk called "The Demise of Guys," which has been viewed by over 1.8 million people. A TED eBook short followed that chronicled how in record numbers men are flaming out academically and failing socially and sexually with women. This new book is an expansion of that brief polemic based on Zimbardo's observations, research, and the survey that was completed by over 20,000 viewers of the original TED Talk. The premise here is that we are facing a not-so-brave new world; a world in which young men are getting left behind. Philip Zimbardo and Nikita Coulombe say that an addiction to video games and online porn have created a generation of shy, socially awkward, emotionally removed, and risk-adverse young men who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school, and employment. Taking a critical look at a problem that is tearing at families and societies everywhere, "Man, Interrupted" suggests that our young men are suffering from a new form of "arousal addiction," and introduce a bold new plan for getting them back on track. The concluding chapters offer a set of solutions that can be affected by different segments of society including schools, parents, and young men themselves. Filled with telling anecdotes, results of fascinating research, perceptive analysis, and concrete suggestions for change, Man, Interrupted is a book for our time. It is a book that informs, challenges, and ultimately inspires.

Review
"In this entertaining, sobering, and thought-provoking book, Dr. Zimbardo bravely and wisely calls attention to the spreading crisis afflicting many of America's young men." -Roy Baumeister, author of Is There Anything Good About Men? and Willpower
"What this book might lack in causal clarity, it makes up for with lucid and compassionate solutions for improving the lives of young men." -Publishers Weekly
"Man Interrupted: Why Young Men Are Struggling And What We Can Do About It is a compassionate look at the phenomenon of young men disappearing into the virtual worlds of videogaming and porn -- to the detriment of everyone. Authors Zimbardo and Coulombe don't simply supply evidence of the risks and benefits of today's hyper-alluring technologies. They also tackle contributing factors, such as absent dads, failing schools, environmental toxins, economic realities, etc., and offer a range of suggestions for parents, media, governments, men, women and schools." --Gary Wilson, author of Your Brain On Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction
"Man, Interrupted is the most important book I've read in years, given that it is thoroughly researched, well-organized, beautifully written, and outlines a problem that affects at least half the population of the country, if not everyone. Even more, it identifies the causes and suggests practical solutions. This book should be read by legislators, judges, politicians, parents, spouses and, well, men…all of them." --Michael Shermer, Publisher Skeptic magazine, columnist Scientific American, author of The Moral Arc
"Zimbardo has put his finger on a great challenge of the modern era, which is how to hang on to the social skills that humanity has accrued over centuries now that virtual reality has no need for them." --Eleanor Mills, The Sunday Times

A Very Important Book About Our Ignored Boys
By J. Evans
This book touches on a very real problem in our society that has been heretofore ignored. Too many of our boys are floundering. They're not doing well in any aspect of life, and we as a society are going to pay a very high price for this.
Nearly every family in America has a boy or young man who is faltering. You know, the kid who has given up trying academically and socially in school, the one who nurses his depression in front of a screen in his room. There are millions of these boys out there, and no one really seems to care. Far from caring, most people mock these young men, labeling them losers for not being able to self-heal the problems that afflict them.
The authors do a creditable job of talking about the how and where, but I think they miss a bit on the why. The why has to do with depression and the general diminution of men in our society. Over the past generation, women have been elevated in our society while men have been turned into pariahs. The old roles--the protector, the provider, the adventurer--are considered laughable by contemporary opinion makers. That's why we see today's stereotypical man reduced to the caricature of the dopey fool. Turn on the TV at any point during the night and this is what you will see being presented. Young men can't help but absorb this message.
Not only that, but parents generally raise their boys with much less care than they spend on their daughters. I've seen this in my own family. Girls are nurtured and engaged in a way that the boys never are. Boys are still seen by most parents as problems-in-waiting, incorrigible mooks who need to be kept in line at all costs. Moreover, parents don't take their boys seriously the way they do their girls. They don't tell boys that they can achieve great things, and they don't tell treat them as budding adults, but rather as perpetual children. It's proven that kids will live up or down to whatever labels we assign to them, so it's no wonder that boys are largely living down to the unflattering tags that we've put on them over the last 30 years. We've treated them as problems, and that's what they've become.
Where the authors do a really great job is in detailing the dangers of porn and screen abuse in general. This is a very real issue, one that is not going away anytime soon. Moreover, it's an issue that isn't being widely addressed in society right now. The human brain simply was not engineered to deal with 500 channels of screaming HD content and high-speed internet. Effectively, this degree of stimulation is as powerful as a drug, one that has the power to alter the minds of all who are over-exposed. This issue presents a whole new set of challenges for society at large.
Some of the advice for raising boys is very good as well. Boys need a certain amount of structure and discipline imposed upon them. I think too many parents give up on their boys too easily. They worry about alienating them, so they don't even try to impose any structure in their lives. The authors strike a very appropriate tone here, advocating an approach somewhere between tough love and parental compassion. They point out, correctly, that boys develop self-esteem and pride through accomplishment, so the real path forward is through getting boys engaged in life. The other key point they make here is to get boys into the right environments to succeed, those in which academic achievement is lauded. When boys see that parents and classmates respect high achievement, they'll be more likely to devote themselves to their studies.
Overall, I highly recommend this book, though I do think it could've stood a re-write to polish it a bit more. The prose reads as though the authors were rushing to get this to press, and that does detract a bit from my overall impression of the book. But the message they're selling is spot-on. Definitely required reading for all parents!
