About the Author
Donald Cruickshank received his degrees from the State University College at Buffalo, NY, and University of Rochester. After stints as a teacher, coach, supervisor, and principal in the Rochester schools, as he began a college teaching and administrative career that took him to SUNY Brockport, the University of Tennessee, Wheelock College, and The Ohio State University. The author of over 100 chapters, articles, and encyclopedia entries, this is his eighth book. He is best known for his pioneering efforts in developing simulations and reflective teaching. Kim Metcalf is director of the Teacher Education Laboratory at Indiana University, Bloomington, and associate professor of curriculum and instruction. He was awarded his M.A. and PH.D. in teacher education and educational research and evaluation from The Ohio State University. Dr. Metcalf is a former music teacher who worked with students in grades K to 12, primarily in instrumental music. His major responsibilities now focus on designing, providing, and evaluating preservice teacher education. He is coauthor of the chapter "Training within Teacher Preparation" in the Handbook of Research on the Teacher Education, and is contributor to the International Encyclopedia of Education. Deborah Bainer is associate professor of education at The Ohio State University, Mansfield campus, where she coordinates the teacher preparation programs. She received her B.S. in biology from Geneva College and her M.S. in environmental education and Ph.D. in Teacher Education from The Ohio State University. She taught middle school and high school science in the U.S. and in Asia, and formerly chaired the education department at Biola University. Currently her teaching responsibilities involve general pedagogy, supervision, and science and social studies methods. Dr. Bainer has authored numerous articles and book chapters reflecting her research in teacher professional development through partnerships, teacher reflectivity, and effective multicultural instruction.

Great Present

I bought this as a present for my engineering mentor who likes to collect older books in solids and mechanics. It came in very good condition. I knew that it was a old library book when I bought it so it had stamps from England which made me laugh when I opened it. Gave it some extra charm I guess. Also showed up on my doorstep promptly.

Desmond Bagley is a Grand-Master of the Adventure-Thriller Genre. As such, he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Alistair MacLean, Duncan Kyle, Helen MacInnis, and Hammond Innis. In a review of one of Bagley’s books, MacLean wrote, “He writes better than I do.” In these “two-fers” you get two great thrillers for the piece of one. A GREAT deal and a GREAT read!

Still a great read

I have read both of these books in the 60's. They were great then and are still a thrill read now. Bagley has written many best sellers in the 60's and 70'. My favorites are The Golden Keel, The Spoilers , Running Blind, Wyatt"s Hurricane and High Citadel.

About the Author
Alex Ross is a an award-winning comic book writer and illustrator and has worked on titles such as Batman, Superman, The Flash and many more. He won the Comic Buyer's Guide CBG Fan Award seven years in a row.

Andrew Loomis was an American illustrator, author and art instructor whose commercial work was featured in advertising and various magazines. Loomis is best known for a series of instructional art books that have influenced popular artists long after his death and has had numerous titles published by Titan Books including Creative Illustration, Drawing the Head and Hands, Figure Drawing, Fun with a Pencil, and Successful Drawing.

It still feels unfinished

[[VIDEOID:11ad64da1c05f4679ae31444c8d39fbf]]Publisher Titan Books did a huge favour for the art community with the reprints of Andrew Loomis books. Apparently, there was an unfinished Loomis that never made it to publication. Well, this is that book.

I'd Love to Draw is a drawing book targeted at the absolute beginners. Loomis' text is as usual very encouraging but some of the text are written in cursive letters which I find difficult to read. Compared to other Loomis books, the instructions here are made simpler, to the extent that I felt they are lacking in depth.

The book covers drawing of basic objects (using geometry), perspective, lighting, drawing the head and figure. The structure is fine but in many cases there could be more explanation included to help beginners. Basic drawing tips are present, but the book had much more potential. A good portion of what's taught here is quite similar to the content in Fun With a Pencil.

The sketches and main text for the book were already completed by Loomis, just that the captions were missing. So comic book artist Alex Ross was enlisted to help finish the book. If you've read Alex Ross' artbooks, you'll find out that he cites Loomis as one of his main influences.

For the last two chapters on drawing the head and figures, Loomis provided only the introduction while Alex Ross had to give captions to all the drawings and he did quite a good job filling in the blanks, providing insight and tips.

Overall, the book still feels unfinished to me. Perhaps it's because of the very sketchy drawings, or the pencils lines that are supposed to be erased but are not, but mostly because there could be more instructions provided.

If you're a beginner, I would recommend getting the other Loomis books which are more detailed, more satisfying to learn from, and represent better value for the money spent.

Think About What This Book is Actually For...

Sure, there's some images in this book that we've seen before. Maybe the information isn't totally fresh if you've read his other books cover to cover. But you have to stop and realize what the point of this book was going to be and what it means today. This particular book serves two purposes: It was originally intended to be a title for people who have never drawn before, sporting an even more fundamental approach than "Fun With a Pencil;" and for the people who already know what's up, it gives us a rare insight into Loomis's workflow, providing us with handwritten manuscripts and rough sketches that have a completely different look and feel than his more polished images that we see in his other books. Of course, an Andrew Loomis book would be nothing without his warm and to-the-point commentary, which is surprisingly in-depth for a "beginner's" how-to book. You can tell this was a labor of love and I think it turned out great, considering the material they had to work from.

Probably not the best introduction to Andrew Loomis

Since I have the other five Loomis re-issues, I didn't blink at picking "I'd Love to Draw" up, but it's definitely a different animal than the other books. So first off, if you're looking for actual instruction, pick up "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" and "Creative Illustration" first. They're both tremendous assets for artists who want to learn how to draw figures (and basic perspective, as well).

"I'd Love to Draw" is actually an unfinished proposal for an unpublished book by Loomis, who wanted to make a book for super-beginners, the sort of people who are intimidated by the very notion of drawing in the first place. So instead of the amazing, more finished drawings in Loomis' other books, the drawings are mostly sketches that would have been re-done in a more time-intensive fashion, had the book been picked up for publication. To help things out, pretty famous cartoonist Alex Ross (of "Marvels" fame) has added a foreward and commentary throughout the book, to help clarify what it is that you're looking at.

So this is an interesting book, but you should probably only get it if you're deep into Loomis and NEED to see more work by him (which is the opposite of the intent of the book in the first place), otherwise you might be wondering what all the fuss about Loomis is. As far as it being good for beginners, perhaps, but there are other how-to books (including the aforementioned Loomis volumes) that you'd probably get more mileage out of.

Good Musicianship is in the practice room

This book is written to help you improve your ideas and mental outlook toward daily practice.. Ms. Bruser goes into the importance of technical correctness, including posture and movement, but she really inspires us to approach practice with a different attitude. I play the tuba as an amateur. After reading her book, I began to practice more, but I actually may spend less time playing notes. Musicianship implies technical expertise, but this book is really written to help you improve your artistic musicality and learn to make music with passion, intelligence and sensitivity. Get a good sense of what competitive graduate programs are looking for in applicant essays

Perfect standardized test scores and grades are not enough to gain entrance to the most selective colleges. Due to grade inflation and test prepping, quantitative perfection is becoming commonplace. To be successful, you must also show the school what kind of person you are. This is where the admissions essays come in.

Colleges require application essays to get a sense of who you are as a person, and what you may contribute to the school’s student body. Are you a leader? Do you have an interesting background? Are you able, and willing, to make a contribution to the intellectual life of the college?

While the undergraduate essay is the focus of many books, the graduate school essay is just as, if not more, important to your acceptance into graduate level programs. Colleen Reding has helped to fill that gap with her new book Grad’s Guide to Graduate Admissions Essays, published by Prufrock Press. This collection of essays provides grad school applicants with models of successful medical school personal statements as well as successful essays from law school, business school and general graduate school students, all of whom attended Georgetown with Ms. Reding for their undergraduate degrees. Grad’s Guide to Graduate Admissions Essays is a gem among other graduate admissions books. Not only do these essays serve as exemplary models written by actual graduate students accepted to some of the world’s most prestigious and selective graduate programs, but Ms. Reding’s honest comments and insightful tips, along with the “Writer’s Words of Wisdom” tidbits, will help any prospective student through the daunting process of graduate admissions. I highly recommend for anyone considering applying to grad school as it has been an especially helpful tool for me.

Exactly what I was looking for. Usually these guidebooks are full of editorial "gab" from the authors, but this one gets straight to the point. By page 3 you are reading the first example essay... and from there, it surprisingly becomes a page-turner... one interesting example after another. Money well spent.
