The year is 1958. The Soviet Union and the United States of America are entrenched in a Cold War. But for Mikhail Kirov, captain in the Soviet Fourth Army, life is relatively idle. After serving honorably in Hungary, Mikhail is stationed to the base of Zossen Wünsdorf, south of Berlin, where he lives in a government-issued house with his wife and six-year-old daughter. Gone are the days of quelling the Hungarian Revolution. The biggest challenge he faces now is teaching his little girl arithmetic. But things are about to change.

An object of unknown origin has been intercepted over the Atlantic by the Americans. Nuclear missiles are launched. The object crashes in Iceland. In a tense moment of necessity, NATO contacts the Kremlin. The Americans need help.

Crimson Dagger serves as a prequel to the video game Xenonauts, by Goldhawk Interactive, a real time strategy game set in the Cold War era. It is a story about cooperation amid extraordinary circumstances as rival superpowers are forced into camaraderie to combat a superior foe. Selected as the leader of this unlikely alliance, Mikhail must set aside he and the Americans' differences as they enter the unknown side-by-side, prompting the question: is the enemy of one's enemy truly their friend?

Definitely worth it
By Commissar Pancakes
I really don't know about anyone else, but the possibility of an Xcom: Enemy Unknown (1993) novella is pretty much null. That being said, Crimson Dagger is the next best thing.

Written as a prequel of Xenonauts, a "spiritual successor" of Xcom 93, Lee manages to capture the feeling of encountering those lumbering extra terestrials hellbent on humanity's destruction quite well. And for $0.99, is definitely worth the price.

Outstanding!

Wow, what an amazing short story! I truly hope this was not the only story by Lee Stephen settled in the Xenonauts universe. I know it is meant as a prequel to the game, but another story would be most appreciated!

Align your leadership team to deliver the highest possible value to your customers

Too many organizations today suffer from silo-centric behavior and intra-organizational conflict. Yet most don't understand what's holding them back from achieving outstanding performance.

Value stream mapping--an essential but underused methodology--is a proven approach to help you visualize and resolve disconnects, redundancies, and gaps in your value delivery system. More than merely a tool to eliminate operational waste, value stream mapping is a highly effective means to transform leadership thinking, define strategy and priorities, and create customer-centric work flow.

In this detailed guide, business performance improvement experts Karen Martin and Mike Osterling present a practical way to deeply understand how work gets done--in any environment--and how to design improved work systems.

You'll learn how to:

  • Prepare and engage your leadership team in the transformation process
  • Gain a deep understanding about your current work systems and the related barriers to delivering value
  • Design a future state that enables outstanding performance on all fronts
  • Adopt the new design and lay the foundation for continued improvement

Whether you are a novice, an experienced improvement practitioner, or a leader, Value Stream Mapping will help you design and operate your business more effectively. And if your organization already uses value stream mapping, this book will help you improve your transformation efforts.

In today's rapid-fire business environment, there are too many problems to be solved and too many opportunities to be leveraged to operate without a highly effective means for accomplishing the important work to be done. Value stream mapping is the missing link in business management and, properly executed, has the power to address many business woes.

PRAISE FOR VALUE STREAM MAPPING

"Value stream mapping has evolved from its roots as a tool used by geeks to reimagine and reconfigure manufacturing operations to a process to enable deep organizational intervention and transformation. With Value Stream Mapping, Karen Martin and Mike Osterling provide an outstanding guide for practitioners engaged in the challenging work of improving the horizontal flow of value across organizations." -- John Shook, Chairman and CEO, Lean Enterprise Institute, and author, Learning to See

"Despite decades of viewing value stream mapping as the core tool of Lean transformations, there is still confusion. Karen and Mike put mapping in its proper perspective as a methodology for getting high-performing teams to see waste, share a future state vision, and build meaningful actions that are carried out with passion and purpose." -- Jeffrey Liker, author, The Toyota Way

"In Value Stream Mapping, Karen and Mike not only provide a great how-to book for transforming value streams, they also demonstrate the benefits that taking a holistic view can have on an organization's culture and commitment to customer value. There is something to learn for the novice and expert on every page." -- Jeff Chester, Chief Revenue Officer & Senior Vice President, Availity

"Martin and Osterling have written an excellent book that shows you how to do value stream mapping and do it right. Follow their advice and your organization will get the profoundly radical change required to better serve your customers and create unprecedented profits and agility." -- Brian Maskell , author, Practical Lean Accounting

"VSM is often misunderstood and underutilized. Strategically, it can be a Rosetta Stone to help bring disparate organizational silos together and a catalyst for stimulating and prioritizing enterprise-wide transformation. Karen and Mike have produced another terrific guide. Read it, practice it, share it, teach it." -- Steve Bell , author, Run Grow Transform

“Value Stream Mapping is well worth picking up. It's a straightforward user's guide to constructing current-state and designing future-state value stream maps that help you visualize and improve your efforts to flow value to your customer.” -– Matthew May, author of The Laws of Subtraction

Using Value Stream Mapping to get real results
By Brian Maskell
Back in the late 1990′s the book “Learning to See” revolutionized my professional life. With lightening clarity I understood what lean flow was about, how I could learn to see the flow, and then make the flow better through kaizen. Working with Bruce Baggaley, (and help from numerous generous people) we set about “Learning to Count” by radically simplifying manufacturing cost accounting around value streams. These were exciting and creative times.

Now 13 or 14 years later, value stream mapping is everywhere. Everyone talks about value stream mapping. Almost every company I visit shows me their maps. This method has become a standard “lean tool”. Value stream mapping is a great success But …..

When you look a little closer you find this success is not so good as you think. There are many companies that have value stream maps on the wall that have no valid data. It’s common to be shown a current state map with no future state. Or you find a value stream map that addresses just a small part of the flow – totally missing the point. Other times I find beautiful looking diagrams created by powerful MapO’Matic software, but the maps are hidden inside computer systems and not really used for anything; and life goes on without any real vision for flow.

Like most good things, value stream mapping has been watered down and rendered impotent.

Karen Martin and Mike Osterling have written an excellent book that shows you step-by-step how to do value stream mapping and do it right. In their short and readable *”Value Stream Mapping”* book Martin and Osterling have laid out the authentic way to map value streams.

The book starts with defining what value streams are and why we need to map them. Then it takes us through the steps required to create a current state map, develop a vision for future excellence, and then how to map what that future will look like. Most importantly, the authors clearly show how we can create a practical action plan to achieve the lean changes we need to make.

If you follow this book, you will be using value stream maps the right way. The way that gets you the profoundly radical change required to better serve your customers and create unprecedented profits and agility.

The added bonus that sets this book apart is that the authors focus on processes in a wide range of industries and professions. You won’t feel like the maps work in factories but not in my office. Chances are your kind of processes are included in the examples.

I am hoping this book becomes a “lean classic” because then everybody can learn how to see, to understand, to improve, and reap the huge benefits of truly lean kaizen

Valuable addition the the Lean and VSM literature
By Jon Miller - Kaizen
How does Value Stream Mapping by Karen Martin & Mike Osterling joins the ranks of the best books on mapping and transforming value streams (material and information flow processes across the enterprise). The book differs from others in that it does not focus on the mechanics of value stream mapping itself. Instead the emphasis is on physical, social and logistical preparation around mapping a value stream. For the expert in value stream mapping, this book provides useful advice on how to embed VSM within the management of an overall change effort. For an experienced change leader without background in VSM, this book provides a good overview of its what and why. For the leader who is new to the above, the book provides guideposts for empowering the rest of the organization to take a stab at value stream mapping.

The six examples of current and future state value stream maps included in the Appendices, drawn from the authors' real experience in across business environments as various as Outpatient Imaging Services, Purchasing, Repair Services, Shelving Systems and Software Development, are a valuable addition to the literature.

Much of the "how" in this book surrounds activities peripheral but important to the mapping itself, such as setting the stage, laying the groundwork, defining the charter, forming the team, "socializing" or communicating the charter, and similarly organizing to implement the transformation plan after mapping. For the actual mapping activity itself, useful explanation is provided on conducting value stream walks, filling out data boxes and asking probing questions about the current and future state.

This book will turn many more people on to the power of value stream mapping and give people the courage and confidence to know that there is a way through the confusion and waste of everyday processes.

Value-Add in Value Stream Mapping
By KDM
In Learning to See by Shook and Rother, I learned how to illustrate a manufacturing process or value stream to illuminate the waste in that process. Keyte and Locher helped me refine the tool and apply it to non-manufacturing environments in The Complete Lean Enterprise: Value Stream Mapping for Administrative and Office Processes. Armed with these basics, I've led many mapping events, and being honest, some were successful while others were not.

Value Stream Mapping by Karen Martin & Mike Osterling is the missing piece that will help me go from how-to-map to how-to-be-more-successful in helping with the continuous improvement efforts in my organization. Learning how to have conversations with upper management, using value stream maps as the vehicle for strategic talks, was an aha moment for me and something I hadn't found in other books.

I would recommend this book to all change-agents, and all mappers (beginners and experienced). For those organizations that have the wall-decorating, unused value stream maps gathering dust, this book will help put the value-add back in value stream mapping.

Dragon King
By The Jeep Diva
Anyone who has been keeping up with Donna Grant’s Dragon Kings knows how Con feels about his Dragon’s finding human mates. He would do anything to keep it from happening. As it is he tries very hard to prevent them and he continually fails in this endeavor. Now imagine his reaction to a freshly woken Dragon finding his true forever love as soon as he wakes from his Dragon Sleep. Arian is so newly awoken that he has not ventured from his cave or found clothing to cover his very sexily naked body. That’s exactly what happens with Arian and Grace (insert maniacal chuckle) and Con is King Pissy over it.

Grace is in a bind. Her publisher is pressuring her to turn in her next book in a few weeks. It’s already way past due. She has ran off to Scotland to find her missing muse. All Grace wants to do is find the perfect quiet spot to write her book, muse permitting. As luck would have it she finds that spot but soon discovers that a cranky man who doesn’t want her anywhere near his cave is already there.

Having slept for the past six hundred years Arian is behind on some things but thanks to Constantine keeping him up on most current events he knows that the Dragon Kings are once again at war. Arian also knows not to trust anyone because enemies are at every turn. Now Arian is left to discover if the beauty with the laptop is a spy sent by their enemies or if she truly is as she says, just looking for a peaceful place.

This installment of the Dark King series could easily work as a stand-alone. There are not any advancements made in the events that have been occurring in the full length novels. There were not any major revelations made that concern the conflicts that the Dragon Kings have been facing.

I loved Arian and the story of how this mountain became ...
By Jillian Read-Love-Blog
Dragon King is story number 6.5 in author Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series and novella number 12 in the 2015 1,001 Dark Nights Series. I’m a huge Donna Grant fan and an equally huge 1,001 Dark Nights fan. Add them together and what do you get? Magic, I tell you. I adored this story and want a dragon of my own!
Hibernating Dragon King Arian and romance author Grace and up together in a most unlikely chance meeting. Grace has no idea just what she’s stumbled upon and Arian is transfixed by Grace’s personality and beauty. Both equally wary and curious of one another, they form a bond and attraction that I can only describe as delicious.
I loved Arian and the story of how this mountain became his bed of sorts. I loved how curious he was about Grace and how enamored and taken he was with her and her quirky nature. I also loved how kind and caring he was with her. He melted my heart with his tenderness and caring (even though he played a bit on her weakness to get her to stay with him…I know, I know, but I can totally forgive him for that!). I also loved Grace. She is real and relatable with a great personality and a tenacious attitude when it came to her writing. She also broke m heart when we learned of her past love life.
Ms. Grant wrote one of my favorite paragraphs in any book, and it came when Grace and Arian became intimate. She wrote that Grace had been writing passion wrong…because it had been so long since she had experienced true passion and she forgot what it actually felt like. That one paragraph had me hoping like a feind these two would somehow make things work.
Of course that would involve the little obstacle of Arian being a dragon. Luckily, Grace being as amazing as she is, it wouldn’t be the biggest problem they had to overcome. Now, I won’t give anything away but I will tell you that Ms. Grant totally nailed the ending and it was movie worthy!
Even if you’ve never even thought of picking up a book with dragons in it, I urge you to give this series a try. It is one of the best paranormals out there and Ms. Grant continues to be an auto-buy author for me! Thank you Ms. Grant and thank you 1,001 Dark Nights for a fantastic read!

What a thrilling fantasy!
By Candy C.
Take flight in this dragon’s tale with some action, danger and steamy nights! What a thrilling fantasy!

This if the first 1001 Dark Nights book I have read and the first of the Dark Kings Series as well. So that means I will not be comparing it to the rest. The beginning was a bit slow, but it heats up fast. I found it to be exciting and fun to read. Oh to find a cave like that with more in it than you could ever imagine, a secret worth discovering. Donna Grant brings this story to life and paints such a vivid tale that it is easy to lose track of time while being totally engrossed in the lives of Grace and Arian. Grace is unlike any character I have seen. She seems to have no problem sharing her private thoughts evens when it embarrasses her. I am used to characters holding back some, but not her. A book that clearly deserves reprinting and circulation
By Constance Cumbey
The importance of THE OCCULT AND THE THIRD REICH by two French scholars as translated by Lewis A. M. Sumberg of the University of Tennessee can scarcely be overstated. It was a vital resource in drawing the obvious parallels between the Nazism of the 30s and 40s and the modern New Age Movement. For sure, it does not give all the picture, but it supplies missing puzzle pieces unavailable elsewhere, except perhaps in the video series now conveniently available on line about the Nazis and the occult. I would well suspect the New Agers do not like the book -- it unmasks them to anybody reading it with knowledge of the buzzwords, spiritual practices and legendry of the modern New Age Movement. Buying it at any price is a good deal; however, the book deserves reprinting and McGraw Hill well knows there has been tremendous demand for it. How about it?

A worthy, worthy read.
By John McLaughlin
I found this book in 1988, while researching the claim that Mary Magdeline's left arm was housed as a relic at Simopetra Monastery on Mt. Athos, Greece (I saw it ).

Once I started to read The Occult and the Third Reich, I couldn't put it down. The theories were so credible that you had to think that the historians and governments deliberately tried to rewrite the history of Nazi Germany in their own view.

What the book expertly does is to offer the National Socialism movement as a quasi religious quest. Readers of Eric Hoffer's True Believer will understand immediately.

Much of the factual evidence presented is very speculative. The authors idolize Otto Rahn, a Nazi who wrote the Crusade Against the Grail and Lucifer's Court. He was the first to publicly connect the 12th century Cathari of southern France to the Holy Grail and an alternative stream of Christianity.

Nevertheless, this book answered a lot of questions and filled in a gap of Hitler's almost unbelievable quest for complete world domination with a nation behind him. The book details correctly the order of the Nazi SS that was styled after King Arthur's Round Table. The Nazi movement was a religion to the chosen few.

I continued my research into the book's accuracy. At one point, I telephoned the Nazi desk expert at the CIA with a couple of questions. The agent told me that this book was his bible.

The Occult and the Third Reich is the beginning of all the alternative books on the Holy Grail and the Cathars. It may not be entirely accurate, but with only 3,000 English books in print, it was the blockbuster on the new genre. It inspired my own science fiction book: G.R.A.I.L.

Survive the Night, by Danielle Vega

Stephen King meets Pretty Little Liars in this pulse-pounding novel from the author of The Merciless

Just back from rehab, Casey regrets letting her friends Shana, Julie, and Aya talk her into coming to Survive the Night, an all-night, underground rave in a New York City subway tunnel. Surrounded by frightening drugs and menacing strangers, Casey doesn’t think Survive the Night could get any worse...

...until she comes across Julie’s mutilated body in a dank, black subway tunnel, red-eyed rats nibbling at her fingers. Casey thought she was just off with some guy—no one could hear her getting torn apart over the sound of pulsing music. And by the time they get back to the party, everyone is gone.

Desperate for help, Casey and her friends find themselves running through the putrid subway tunnels, searching for a way out. But every manhole is sealed shut, and every noise echoes eerily in the dark, reminding them they’re not alone.

They’re being hunted.

Trapped underground with someone—or something—out to get them, Casey can’t help but listen to Aya’s terrified refrain: “We’re all gonna die down here.”

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Casey just got out of rehab, and she is having trouble adjusting. When her old friend Shana shows up to whisk her away for a night of debauchery in New York City, Casey can't join her fast enough. Shana didn't tell her that they were going to see Sam, Casey's ex-boyfriend. Their awkward reunion is interrupted by news of an underground party that no one can find. Shana uses her powers of persuasion to get a location, but the group of friends soon discover that the "Survive the Night" party is a name that should be taken literally. Will any of them be able to get out alive? With this pulse-pounding, nail-biting novel from the author of The Merciless (Penguin, 2014), Vega creates immediately likable and relatable characters in shell-shocked Casey and free-spirited bad girl Shana. Seemingly innocuous moments become situations of disquieting terror, like when Casey tries to go after Shana in a warehouse in an attempt to find the party's location. Casey's past romance with Sam provides an interesting layer that keeps the book moving in its early quiet chapters. When events amp up toward the climax, the characters react to their predicament resolutely and continue their strong dynamic. VERDICT This book will appeal to fans of suspense who don't mind monsters popping out from behind every corner.—Ryan P. Donovan, Southborough Public Library, MA

About the Author
Danielle Vega spent her childhood hiding under the covers while her mother retold tales from the pages of Stephen King novels instead of reading bedtime stories about princesses and dwarves like a normal parent. Now an adult, she can count on one hand the number of times in her life she's been truly afraid. Danielle has won numerous awards for her fiction and nonfiction, and earned a 2009 Pushcart Prize nomination for her short story “Drive.” She is also the author of The Merciless.

Danielle Vega's Survive the Night was yet another creeptastic and surprising read! As the story started out I thought we'd be seeing another horror themes but Danielle completely surprised me with this one! It got pretty terrifying for the last 1/3 of the novel.

Casey just got out of rehab for drug overdose. It was a sad story of sorts. Casey was a soccer star and had a lot going for her. Then she injures her leg and is out for the season. While in the hospital she meets and befriends Shana. Through Shana, Casey loses a part of herself. She doesn't really realize this though. Soon she starts popping painkillers even when she doesn't need them and Shana's bad girl ways continue to fuel and strengthen the habit. And it's because of Shana, Casey ended up overdosing and was sent to rehab.

Though when our story begins, Casey doesn't seem 100% ready to change. She ditches her old friends to join Shana and the girls at a club where her ex-boyfriend is playing. Naturally, she still longs for him, especially since she was the "dumpee".

Soon the group of friends find themselves looking for the elusive Survive the Night party, because it's all the rage! That's when trouble starts to brew. Firstly, you cannot leave the party until sunrise or some such time. But when the police break it up early that's not the issue. Getting out it.

Before we're halfway through, Casey finds one of her friends dead. Murdered. It's pretty gory. And when the friends try to leave, they find themselves lost and no viable exits.

Word on the street is that there's a murderer on the loose. Someone was found dead and missing body parts at a previous party. Which this info only ante ups the danger. But what the group doesn't realize is how very real the danger is.

This read was far creepier than Danielle's first book. But you don't realize how creepy until maybe the last third of the novel. The pages start flying by because you want to see if Casey and her friends will make it out alive. Answers are truly never clear, but that's almost a positive thing here, because it adds to the insanely creepy mystery. Though I do still wonder about the "mystery". An answer never really became clear for part of it. But it almost seems nonsensical in the light of day.

It's funny too, not that long ago I was watching this old 90s horror movie on TV, I even saw it as a kid--terrified me then, not so much now! Yay! Anyway, I felt reminded of that movie, though the setting was different. I won't mention the movie for obvious spoiler reasons, but it's odd that I thought of said movie when I had watched it months ago. I swear there was another read somewhere in between all these books that also reminded me of the same movie!! I think I even met that author this year and asked her about it, but if I recall, that movie played no part in her inspiration. It was truly just a coincidence! Luckily, I'll meet Danielle soon and I can ask her about this then!

Survive the Night is not for the faint of heart. It's quite terrifying because a lot of the story happens in total darkness underground! Everything is always far creepier when you can't see what's coming at you! Its ending will leave you chilled! So be sure to leave a light on! *winks*

Scary Survival
By Making Good Stories
Think of all the B-movie horror films you've seen that are about teenagers at a party when things suddenly go wrong. Add in a deserted subway tunnel and a monster and you've got Danielle Vega's Survive the Night.

Casey Myrtle is a former high school soccer star who had everything going for her, including an incredibly attractive musician boyfriend, Sam. But when a knee injury sidelines her, Casey starts hanging out with a different sort of crowd, which Shana, with her brightly colored hair, prominently reigns. Shana had planted the idea of taking painkillers for fun rather than just to manage knee pain and helped push Casey into a path of self-medicated self-destruction. Still freshly single and after coming back from rehab, Casey is going to a sleepover with her soccer friends, or at least she was until Shana shows up with a plan to head to New York City for the night to see Sam's band play. While at the music venue, the girls learn about an all-night rave called Survive the Night and set out to find it. Once they do find it, they all have a bit of fun until their friends start disappearing...and then turning up maimed and dead. What horrors lurk in the tunnels and will they get out alive?

The writing was quite good and quickly paced as the suspense built. The narrative progressed naturally with both real-time and flashbacks to flesh out the story arc of Casey's character and what happened to take her from star athlete to pill addict. There were cliches abound in the story, which made me immediately think of all the cheesy horror movies I've ever seen, and this story sticks to the cliched arsenal by having the female virgin survive the terrors of the night. And while a good sewer alligator story has its place, the creature in this story didn't really seem to come from a reasonable place or fit within the established constructs of the story--needless to say, once we were introduced to the creature, my suspension of disbelief went out the window faster than these teens could run from the tentacles with claws.
