About the Author

Nina Beaman

Ed.D., MSN, CNE (NLN), RN-BC (PMH), RNC-AWHC, CMA (AAMA) Nina Beaman has been a Certified Medical Assistant since 1994 and has participated actively on the local, state, and national levels of the American Association of Medical Assistants. She is also a triple-certified Registered Nurse with certifications in Nursing Education, Psychiatric/Mental Health and Ambulatory Women’s Health. She completed her doctoral dissertation on "Using Disaster Simulation to Promote Volunteerism in Medical Assisting Students." Dr. Beaman teaches at Aspen University and Independence University. Nina owns a Consulting firm, Positive Transitions, where she provides crisis intervention, education, curriculum development, continuing education review, and violence prevention training. A popular speaker and author, she writes on her farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In her spare time, she works as a forensic nurse consultant and disaster expert.

Kristiana D. Routh

Kristiana D. Routh is a Registered Medical Assistant through American Medical Technologists. Kristiana has worked in the healthcare field for over 14 years and has a passion to see the field of medical assisting grow and develop. Her experience in the educational field of medical assisting includes teaching, curriculum development, working closely with accrediting bodies, and writing multiple textbook and supplemental resources for both instructors and students. Kristiana also owns her own business, Allied Health Consulting Services. Her business focuses on accreditation trends throughout healthcare, writing and developing educational content for the field of medical assisting, and also project management services for physicians and health care facilities. Lorraine M. Papazian-Boyce, MS, CPC

AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer Lorraine M. Papazian-Boyce is an award-winning author and instructor. She authored the Pearson text ICD-10-CM/PCS Coding: A Map for Success, which received the Most Promising New Textbook Award—2013 from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association. She was named Educator of the Year — Instruction — 2011 by Career Education Corporation (CEC).Lorraine has taught at several career colleges, both traditional and online. She has over 30 years of experience in healthcare administration as office manager; biller and coder; management consultant to hospitals, nursing homes, and physicians; and former owner of a medical billing and coding service. Lorraine has contributed to numerous textbooks and journals in the health professions field and is a nationally-known speaker. She holds a M.S. in Health Systems Management; the CPC credential; and is an AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer and Ambassador.

Janet R. Sesser

Janet R. Sesser, a Registered Medical Assistant with American Medical Technologists, holds a Master of Science in Health Education and Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management. Her background includes many years working as a practicing medical assistant for various types of practices and as a cardiopulmonary technician. For the past 25 years, she has worked in postsecondary education teaching and writing allied health curricula. Sesser is very involved with American Medical Technologists, serving as an elected member of the AMT Board of Directors. She is a recipient of the Medallion of Merit Award, the highest honor bestowed by AMT to a medical assistant, and she is a frequent presenter at national medical conferences.

Ron Maly

Ron Maly currently holds certifications as a RMA (AMT) and CPhT (PTCB). He obtained his B.S. degree in Biology, Natural Science and Pre-Med with a minor in Chemistry from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska in 1989. In 1991 he received his M.A. degree (with thesis) in Biology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The abstract from his thesis has been nationally published. In 1992 Ron was employed with Harris Laboratories (currently Celerion) in Lincoln, NE as a Chemist and later as a Validation Scientist. In his seven years with Harris Laboratories, Ron had numerous scientific papers on LC/MS/MS pharmaceutical-based research presented at national conferences. In 1999 Ron began working as a medical assistant/histotechnologist for a Moh’s micrographic surgeon in Omaha, NE. During this time he also began working part-time as a pharmacy technician. From 2005 to present, Ron has taught at the college level as a Pharmacy Technician Program Coordinator for Hamilton College/Kaplan University, Council Bluffs, IA; Medical Assisting Program Coordinator and Medical Billing and Coding Coordinator at the Omaha School of Massage and Healthcare of Herzing University, Omaha, NE and is currently the Medical Assisting Program Coordinator and Interim Pharmacy Technician Program Coordinator for National American University, Bellevue, NE.

Great for MA certification exam prep!

My school provides us the e-book for this textbook. Since I'll be using it throughout my entire MA program, I decided to order the hard copy. Fast deliver, great condition for a used book. I have had no problem comprehending the text. It is sorted out nicely, and addresses all the areas that will be on the national certification exam. I would love it were spiral-bound because it is THICK, but I think it is a great textbook for students who are wanting to be become CMAs.

In 1844, Albert Koch, then an obscure but passionate paleontologist, began his remarkable journey. His objective was paleontological exploration, and his travels took him by land and water from Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, to New Orleans and Alabama in search of the gigantic sea serpent, or Zeuglodon. His full, day-by-day, record of his journey was excerpted and published in Germany in 1847. The book, which is extremely rare, is here translated and published in English for the first time.

Not only was Koch a passionate scientist; he was also a shrewd observer of the social and political scene. His observations are replete with staggering detail, and his impressions given in vivid descriptions. An unusual and important contribution to the history of American civilization.

Barnum the scientist

This delightful book provides, as few do, an interesting behind-the-scenes look at a remarkable facet of American history. Of the countless idosyncratical stories that combine to make up what we call Americana, this is among the most interesting from the early nineteenth century.

Albrecht Koch was a successful freelance German bone-hunter in the day of antediluvians; a self-promoted, self-styled scientist; and a showman worthy of P.T. Barnum's envy. Koch, among other pursuits, excavated mastodon bones from springs in the Missouri Ozarks; from these he (mis)assembled a complete sketeton of what he termed the "Missourium", which he sold to the British Museum, who correctly identified the remains as those of a mastodon, reassembled the bones correctly (Koch had the tusks recurved), and have displayed the skeleton in London ever since. This and other episodes combine for a very nice walk in history in the company of a one-of-a-kind man.

Two of Koch's excavated spring deposits were re-excavated in the 70s, revealing wooden planks installed by Koch on the dug-out muck, and providing samples for more sophisticated studies. I myself was privileged to visit the new digs when the scientists were finished, and in the wall of a pit I myself found a small fragment of a mastodon bone; needless to say, that experience made for a greater appreciation of this worthy book, which I heartily recommend to the general reader.

Further to the south, the Minoan civilisation based on Crete held sway, and this power - along with the Helladic Achaeans to the north gradually swamped the Cycladic civilisation in between.
In common with most Bronze Age societies, the culture of the Aegean world was dominated by warfare, with the inhabitants living in organized settlements and small citadels with fortification walls and bulwarks, towers and gates to provide protection against invaders from the sea or internecine conflicts. About the Author

Dr Raffaele D'Amato is an experienced Turin-based researcher of the ancient and medieval military worlds. After achieving his first PhD in Romano-Byzantine Law, he gained a second doctorate in Roman military archaeology. He currently works as vice-head of the Laboratory of the Danubian Provinces at the University of Ferrara.

Born in 1962, Andrea Salimbeti has had a life-long interest in ancient military history. He served as a paratrooper in the Italian Army in Beirut and attended the Space Academy and flight training in USA. He now works for the space programme, and is also author of various articles on aerospace technology and flight equipment.

An excellent succinct overview of the subject making use of the latest archaeological evidence

First and foremost, any review of this book would have to begin with a quick discussion of the Osprey "Warrior" series format, of which it is part of. These books are relatively short, being only 48 pages in length (about a third of which consists of illustration). Hence if one is looking for an in-depth tome on the subject this is not the book to pick up. It can only serve, due to the limits of the format, as a succinct overview. A second point that needs to be made is that the author, Dr. Raffaele D'Amato, is extremely knowledgeable regarding the subject. He received his PhD in Roman-Byzantine studies, is the curator of the World Museum of Man and has written extensively on related topics (i.e., Osprey's "Bronze Age Greek Warriors 1600-11 BC"). This knowledge permeates the entire book.

Considering the limits of the format, the question that needs to be asked is how well does the book cover the subject? The answer is surprisingly well. This is so for a number of reasons. The most important, by far, is that includes the most up-to-date research on the subject. This research is nearly all in the form of archaeological evidence. The book is also richly illustrated and the reader obtains a very good idea of how, based on the archaeological evidence, these warriors dressed and what type of weapons they used during this period (and how the weapons and dress developed over the period). This is the book's strength. The book also does a very good job at examining the ethnological movements of peoples throughout this region during the period albeit it does lack maps that would have been a great benefit in this respect.

Where the book is weak, however, is its coverage of the military organizational structures of these societies, tactics and strategies? However, as even the author points out, these are not known and the current academic material covering them is more hypothesis and speculation than anything based on hard evidence, whether it is hard archaeological evidence or the mythology or literature of the time.

All and all a very good succinct very up-to-date overview of the subject.

Archaeology, reconstructions and descriptions

This Osprey publication may seem a bit unusual, because it largely lacks the historical context that can be found in most other volumes of the series. A fairer assessment would be to recognize the choice that the authors have deliberately made to concentrate on archaeological findings, to describe these and to use them as the basis for their reconstructions. To a large extent, their alternatives were limited simply because there were no primary written sources that they could make use of.

This is not to say that there is no discussion of the origins of the various waves of "Indo-Europeans", or the Cretans, for instance. Only that it is kept to a minimum with the authors, for instance, also clearly making the point that the existence of the "Minoan sea power" is nothing more than a theory dating back to Evans, even if it is a plausible and logical one, as they also show. Also interesting is the explanation given for the collapse of Minoan power. Again, this is a theory, to the extent that we do not know "know" for sure in the absence of written sources, but it is a rather plausible one. One last important point is that by the time of the "Trojan War" (assuming, again, that it really took place as indicated by Homer), Crete was divided into Achaean principalities with the Achaeans having conquered the island and ruling it for a couple of centuries

The main (and high!) value of this book lies in its descriptions centred on the various findings of pieces of arms and armour, on one hand, and the rather gorgeous reconstructions through the plates. At times, the descriptions of assorted arms and armour may read as some museum catalogue but with the added advantage that they are a selection from findings all over Greece and the Aegean. They are also superbly illustrated by sets of pictures and drawings.

Then there are the colour plates themselves which, when superb as they are here, are one of the main attractions of every Osprey volume. I was particularly impressed by the one of page 57 titled "the Achaean conquest of Knossos, 1430 BC" with the characters "feeling" so real that I had the impression that they were about to leap of the page! More generally, there is a rather good interaction between the plates, the pictures and drawings and the main text.

I also had two relatively minor points to raise - I cannot call them "issues". One was about the bibliography, where the authors referenced multiple and rather specialized titles but did not seem to recommend any book that could provide more context about the period. For instance, I was surprised not to find a reference to Oliver Dickinson's "The Aegean Bronze Age", although another of his works is cited. Maybe space constraints obliged the authors to make some hard choices and leave that one (and a few others perhaps) out. Another little quibble is a tendency to write about the various periods and using the rather specialised and hermetic acronyms (such as LH, LM etc...) without always providing the corresponding dates. The non-specialist reader is then obliged to "jump back and forth" at times to see what period is being covered exactly.

Anyway, these were quibbles more than anything else and the title was worth a solid four stars for me.

Finally someone has tackled the dodgy question of weapons, armor, ships and tactics in the pre-Hellenic Aegean. The mainland, Crete and the Cyclades are all covered in this wonderful book. While some of the inferences were come to inductively, I feel no doubt that they are on the mark.

Comic novelist Boylan (The Constellations) takes a road trip on the elite New England college circuit with four interviewing high-school seniors and three incompetent adults, all in a Winnebago, and along the way manages to drive his farcical premise into the ground. The story focuses on confused young Dylan, who feels as inadequate as his spineless father, Ben, a widower reeling from the bankruptcy of his computer business. Dylan hides a secret from Ben (it's given away almost immediately, though the author keeps trying to wring suspense from it), shared by his partying jock cousin Juddy, son of Ben's brother, Lefty, a wealthy car salesman who resents Ben for attending college. Juddy is a partier, and fencing makes him feel like a superhero?as it should when Harvard woos him so obsequiously. Filling out the cast of stock characters are Lefty's new wife, Chloe, a gold digger seeking a tuition sugar daddy for her daughter Allison, a pretty musician; Allison; and Allison's boyfriend, Polo MacNeil, a haughty Manhattanite who says things like "my good man" and "don't you know." These characters wander across college campuses (which only incidentally affect the story) playing out tired parts and plots: missing Harvard because of Boston's traffic, teaching each other platitudes and overreacting to petty dramas. Throughout, character and plausibility serve the author's wants rather than the story's needs. This comedy is much too broad to go deep. Film rights to New Line Cinema. (Sept.) In a novel so light it threatens to drift free of the reader's imagination with the first decent rerun of The Paper Chase, Boylan (The Planets, 1991; The Constellation, 1994) has contrived a fiction lacking in the richness of plot that made his earlier work such a hoot yet neglects to supply the compensations of well-developed characters, whose maturation is the theme here. Boylan makes admirable efforts to broaden the inert genre of Ivy League-style, white, proto-materialist teenhood by incorporating the parents of the hopeful youth herewho are trying to gain admission to at least one of nine New England collegesinto the cathartic tale. Ostensibly, the mission that sets the story in motion begins as Juddy (surfer dude), Polo (yuppie), Dylan (sensitive and shy), and Allison (sensitive and not shy) join adults Lefty, Ben, and Chlowho, in varying degrees, are parents to the threein a Winnebago to travel the Ivy League circuit, with the teens interviewing at each stop. Ben and Lefty are brothers, whose latent rivalry is spiked with hidden secrets, while Chlo, Lefty's wife, is torn in her emerging affection for Ben. Mismatched lovers Allison and Polo are brought to their better senses somewhere around Connecticut, and Dylan comes to terms with his grief-tarnished past, ultimately getting the girl in a Wesleyan graveyard. While Boylan's premisethat this stressful ordeal forces on everyone life-changing examinations of past and presentis exhausted fairly early; the sustaining. ambition of each member of the group seems to be: How to get sex with (select member of party) in good conscience? (Answer: Place friends in stressbox and shake.) Thus, the tiresome sexual irony of the title. Boylan needs a lesson on Getting In A Good Writing Program

I would not recommend this book to anyone unless they are looking for a non-realistic cutsie book to pass the time. The book starts with a good premise: what the elaborate ritual of college admissions really tells about a person and who he or she is. However, the story gets lost with odd twists, turns, and irrelevant plot lines. This poorly written maze of a book about nothing isn't exactly written for teens as it heavily focuses on the emotions of the stress of parents sending their children away. There are some mildly amusing parts as Dylan goes through various college interviews. However, most of these situations are cliché and predictable. The more unintentional amusing parts of this book is watching the author, James Finney Boylan, attempt to create characters that talk like modern day teenagers. Someone should tell this guy no one calls each other "dickweed" or "dude" in every sentence. Another thing that is annoying is that he writes like he is still in junior high. One may notice he shifts from the narrator talking in first person to third person at various points. He also used convoluted vocabulary in an attempt to add some sort of depth to the writing. So if you are really bored, there may be some humorous things in this book to read, mostly unintentional.

Uniquely structured, this book takes the form of a college tour across New England. For anyone who has ever dreamed of strolling through Harvard Yard, getting lost on the rolling hills of Middlebury or being tapped by the Yale Society, this book puts a new spin on the ancient rite of passage facing high school seniors across America: college selection. But in reality, while this books operates under the premise of college selection, it functions more as a searing psychological portrait of Americans young and old, men and women struggling to cope with the mistakes of their past and retain hopes for a better future. Boylan brilliantly juxtaposes the psyche of the teenager confused by not knowing who or what to believe in but having an entire lifetime ahead with that of the adult, who having endured the trials and tribulations of age, must face the yearnings to be young again and start over. A very good read.

I am a fan of Jim Boylan and have enjoyed his previous books, but I particularly liked Getting In. The process of getting accepted into a college becomes an avenue to explore how one presents oneself, what constitutes success, what motivates us... all in a funny, tender look at growing up, finding oneself and being true to oneself. Sensitive understanding of dynamics of parenting, the college admissions process, and ties that bind in families. An entertaining book that will make you laugh, and if you are my age, remember when it all seemed so terribly important to the rest of your life what a college admission officer thought of you.

Great book to keep handy on desktop

In my role supporting enterprise risk management, I found this book a good quick read to make sure you're caught up on COSO 2013 updates and also provides a good primer overall on risk management and internal controls. This book in combination with ISO 31000 Risk Management is enough to give any organization the basic building blocks required for setting up / assessing / or further enhancing their risk management and internal controls program. I appreciated the direct style of the writing that skipped right into the meat of what we need to know and how to apply it to a wide range of situations.

4.5/5 stars(RabidReads.com)Zombie Apocalypse anyone? This is book two of this series, although there is also a novella, Midway, making it three stories so far that I have read recently. I love finding a series that I want to read back to back, and that’s pretty much what I have been doing with these reads.

The Harvesting introduced us to Layla, a kick butt heroine, that has been leading what is now a small group of people from her hometown, into the world that is left after the zombies took over. In Midway, we met Cricket, a carnival worker that is also caught up in this new world. With this installment, the two heroines meet and band together. Cricket and Tristan now have a home base in a small college that is surrounded by a locked wall. Tristan is one of the more interesting characters in these books. He looks human, but no, not so much. I really liked his character in both books he’s featured in, although he was pretty different in Midway, than he is in this book. Of course, Layla’s new love, Jamie, is along for the ride. The rest of the college complex is made up of the few remaining friends of Layla’s and Jamie’s, the fortune teller Vella, who is first introduced in Midway, college students and other locals, and a doctor that is conducting experiments to find a cure for the “flu” that caused the zombies.

I appreciated the way the author filled this zombie world with other supernatural characters, ones that no one was aware of until the world changes. Vampires, and not the good kind, shape shifting Fae like characters that cause major problems for humans, and “earth” people that are trying to save humankind from those that want to end them.

As with the other installments, this is not a feel good read. Instead, it’s an exciting life or death thrill ride. Also, as before, not everyone survives. I must admit that one of the deaths in particular, pretty much blind sighted me. But this author is really not afraid to go there and that keeps this series from being cookie cutter, in any way. This one also features a pretty major cliffhanger, which I am not usually a fan of, but it didn’t bother me that much. Maybe. I am still thinking on that!

As with the other installments, I highly recommend this book to mature young adults and adults, due to the amount of violence, sexual situations, and language. Not to mention the all around creepiness factor. Next up is Witch Wood, another novella set in this same world, but with a new main character, although the blurb says it can standalone.

Layla and her family and friends exit the labyrinth and find themselves in thick woods. The other side was to be safe for them all. What they find is far from it. Layla does come across new allies in the world of the walking dead. Now she needs to choose who she thinks she can trust, after learning she placed her trust in others to easily. There's an ancient power at work now. Layla and her crew starts to question, why would spirits of the land help them, or hinder them?

I've continued listening to the series as I love Kristin's voice acting. She slips into each and every character, becoming them in voice. She does the breathless moments when in dialog. She does several accents through the story for Cricket, Tristan, and many others along with deeper and different tones for male and females. All this makes it so easy for the listener to differentiate the characters. I love how Kristin knows what words to put an accent on, to show there is more meaning behind the word.

Layla is still strong for her people. But she's starting to break down. She's realized too late that she's trusted to easily. And her friends have paid for the mistake in blood. Not everyone, or being, is good inside. Now Layla must figure out who she can trust in this dark world of death. I feel for her as she's slipped into the role of leader for her strength and insight from the spirits. Those that are left from Hamletville look to her for guidance on if they stay or go.

This book brings Cricket and those from her novella together with Layla and her friends from Hamletville. Cricket is a sweet yet determined young lady. I really enjoy her outlook on things and her strength. We do learn about what we suspected of Tristan. Well, part of it. We'll most likely learn more as we come out the portal in book three. Seeing Vella the tarot reader interact with Layla, the few short times we do, I got excited. I would like to see them talk more. I don't know, I think it's a feel I got when Layla was with her grandmother. I just loved the feel of the old blood in them.

We also come to meet new characters. A few of which I enjoyed and love and a few that I'm very suspicious of. One new character is a Doctor. Dr. Gustav is working hard to figure out what happened to cause the undead in people and she thinks she can cure it!

Melanie walks us through the next expansion of the world here. We saw the undead and vampires in the first book. We learn about the thin places and fog here, along with some of the natural spirits. Each growth of the world in each book is placed to explain and grow the stories. We even start to get a look into why this is happening along with how. And, to Layla and a few other observers, there is a difference in the undead as well. Which kind of made me start to feel for the undead. *gasp*

I know the characters are in constant trouble with the danger of the undead and vampires, but it doesn't feel high strung fast. I really like this. People need rest, even if not 100% trusting of those around them. That comes through yet the stories moving to keep us interested. The grown of the world helps balance the pacing and action. Not to fast. Not to slow. Just right.

Melanie did the one thing I feared she'd do from the moment we walked into Claddagh-Basel college. I'm not telling you what it was. You have to figure it out yourself. But it did leave me NEEDING book 3! lol!

Really can't wait to continue in this series with the next novella and novel!

A few years back I reviewed my first book for Melanie Karsak which was The Harvesting. I loved the world that she created and was excited to see what become of the characters. I recently read Midway, which gave me an insight to new characters being introduced in The Shadow Aspect and what would happen once these two groups finally merged together. Layla’s group from The Harvesting ran into danger at the end of the book, and that continued into this book. Cricket’s group had found shelter in a small town and seem to be doing well, despite the current danger.

Layla felt the pressure from her decisions and often doubted what needed to be done, but she was still a great leader and listened to her instincts. I liked seeing her ‘sense’ develop throughout this book and how she could see some differences with certain ‘dead’ people. Her relationship with Jamie strengthened, but he felt a little absent at times.

Cricket showed just how resilient she could be and didn’t back down from any challenge set out for her. Her attraction to Tristan seems to be mutual, but she’s unsure why he won’t make a move. Tristan is a bit secretive, hiding things from Cricket and I had a hunch as to what one of them was.

The Shadow Aspect had plenty of blood, gore and action from start to finish; both groups suffered significant losses and there were threats at every turn. There were zombie’s galore and appearances from other dangers that were discovered in the first book. I liked how they all joined forces and worked well as a team. There were a lot of new characters introduced and I had icky feelings about some of them and wasn’t sure whether they were to be trusted or not. I enjoyed the alternating perspectives from both Layla and Cricket and felt that having both perspectives fleshed out the plot a little bit more. That ending though… argh! I hope I don’t have to wait too long for more!
