Fiction Beyond the Novel

Just when you think there's nothing left to find in fiction, a book like this comes along. I read the same stories in the New Yorker and ordered the book immediately. The vignettes in flash fiction form all deal with the relationship between fathers and sons. Some are funny. Some are poignant. All are incredibly creative. Some even read like copy for a local news teleprompter.

This book is fantastic, so long as you are comfortable with the flash fiction format and aren't looking for a collection of short stories or a full-length novel. Sachs is easily one of the most creative and detailed writers to come around in a long time, and I look forward to whatever he does next.

Dr. David Allen is First Tennessee Professor of Management at the University of Memphis. He has been studying turnover and retention for more than a decade and has published numerous turnover studies in top Management and Psychology journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Relations, and Human Resource Management Review (see Appendix). He has also translated this scholarly research into managerial and practitioner friendly guides for the SHRM Foundation and for the Academy of Management Perspectives. Dr. Phil Bryant is an Assistant Professor at Columbus State University. His research on Human Resource Management and Employee Turnover has been published in journals such as Human Resource Management Review, Academy of Management Perspectives, and Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal. He has made several presentations at academic conferences as well as practitioner venues such as Memphis Society of Entrepreneurs. Additionally, Dr. Bryant has worked as a Human Resource Manager for both small and large organizations. The insight into the issues and how to effectively manage turnover needs to be payed attention to. I can appreciate a different perspective into how to keep my best employees and build a successful workforce any day. Second Best Optimal

'Mathematical Methods' is the best math econ text you can buy. It does a far better job of explaining math modeling than Takayama or Simone and Blume. It reads better than Chiang. Its' broad coverage of techniques should be enough to satisfy most any instructor.
It starts off by running through some important basics- set theory, Venn diagrams, proofs. It then works up to calculus and optimization. It could use some more game theory, and should ditch the section on ISLM. The main strength of this book is that, unlike other math econ texts, one can read and understand it without prior knowledge of advanced mathmatics.
Of course, nobody really needs to learn all, or even most of, the math in this book. To get credentails as an economist, students must jump through many a mathematical hoop. This book helps students through this better than any of the alternatives. It has a reasonable paperback price too. Do not expect to have much fun reading 'Mathematical Methods'. Just bear in mind that there are far worse books to use in studying math econ.

A good overview

Mathematical economics has been around for about 175 years, although as a discipline it has only been recognized for about five decades. Professional economists have had various levels of confidence in its validity and applicability, and mathematical economists have been criticized for the esoteric nature of the mathematics they deploy and some have been ostracized from academic departments for this very reason. This book emphasizes the mathematical tools, these being primarily the theory of optimization and dynamical systems, but the author does find time to discuss applications. Some of these could be classified as "classical" applications, but some are very contemporary in their scope and intersect the work done in financial engineering.

Part 1 of the book introduces the reader to the necessary background in real analysis, topology, differential calculus, and linear algebra. All of this mathematics is straightforward and can be found in many books.

In chapter 5, the author considers static economic models, which are described by collections of parametrized systems of equations. The equations are dependent on parameters describing the environment and `endogenous' variables. The goal is to find the values of the endogenous variables at equilibrium, and to find out if the equilibrium solutions are unique. In addition, it is interest to find out how the solution set changes when the parameters are changed. This is what the author calls `comparative statics'. Linear models are considered first, their analysis being amenable to the techniques of linear and multilinear algebra. The comparative statics for linear models is straightforward, with the shift in equilibrium as a parameter is change readily calculated. The comparative statics of nonlinear models involves the use of the implicit function theorem, and the author derives a formula for doing comparative statics in differentiable models. The discussion here, involving concepts such as transversality, critical points, regular values, and genericity, should be viewed as a warm-up to a more advanced treatment using differential topology.

The author studies static optimization in chapter 7, with the postulate of rationality assumed throughout. This allows the study of the behavior of economic agents to be reduced to a constrained optimization problem. The techniques of nonlinear programming are used to find solutions to the constrained optimization problem. Throughout this chapter one sees discussion of the ubiquitous `agent' who is embedded in a collection of possible environments, and is able to carry out a certain collection of actions.

The author finally gets to economic applications in chapter 8, wherein the author studies the behavior of a single agent under a set of restrictions imposed on it by its environment. This rather simplistic study is then generalized to the case of many interacting agents who are taken to be rational. The concept of `equilibrium', so entrenched in economic theory and economic modeling, makes its appearance here. In a condition of equilibrium, no agent has an incentive to change its behavior, and the actions of each individual are mutually compatible. Some of the usual concepts of equilibrium are discussed in the chapter, such as Walrasian equilibrium in exchange economies, and Nash equilibrium in game theory. The (subjective) preferences of consumers are modeled by binary relations and differentiable utility functions. The differentiability allows the techniques of chapter 7 to be used. The author asks the reader to work through some examples of `imperfect' competition at the end of the chapter.

After a straightforward review of dynamical systems in chapters 9 and 10, the author discusses applications of dynamical systems in chapter 11. He begins with a discussion of a dynamic IS-LM model, using assumptions on the evolution of the money supply, the formation of expectations, and price dynamics. This model consists of two first-order ordinary differential equations, and the author studies its fixed-point structure via a standard phase-space analysis. This analysis allows the author to study the effect of a change in parameters, such as change in the rate of money creation, i.e. the effects of a certain monetary policy. Also discussed are `perfect-foresight models', which address the difficult issue of boundary conditions in economic models based on dynamical systems. Two of these models are discussed, one is a stock price model based on the no-arbitrage principle from finance, and the other is a model of exchange-rate determination. The stock price model is the most interesting discussion in the book. It requires one to specify how expectations are formed, and, depending on how this is done, some very unexpected results occur. For example, if the agents have adaptive expectations, the author shows that the forecast error is predictable, and that agents who understand the structure of the model will have an incentive to deviate from the predicted behavior. This behavior on the part of the agents will invalidate the theory since the agents will have an incentive to compute the trajectory of prices, contrary to the assumption of the model. The author concludes that this is in direct conflict with the assumption that individuals are rational and maximize utility, i.e. that in a world without uncertainty, adaptive expectations are inconsistent with the assumption of rationality. The author avoids this problem by assuming that `perfect foresight' holds for the agents, i.e. the agents form expectations that are consistent with the structure of the model. He shows that the assumption of perfect foresight eliminates the inconsistency that was found in the adaptive expectations model. In the perfect foresight model, every agent uses the correct model to predict prices, and no agent has any incentive to act differently. The author then uses this model to study the response of share prices to a change in the tax rate on dividends. The rest of the chapter discusses neoclassical growth models and the software language Mathematica is introduced as a tool for solving nonlinear differential equations.

I did not read the last two chapters of the book, which cover dynamic optimization and its applications, and so I will omit their review.

About the Author
Neil R. Carlson pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois. He had planned to study nuclear physics, but when he discovered in an introductory psychology course that psychology was really a science, he decided that was what he wanted to do. Before changing his major, Carlson talked with several professors and visited their laboratories, and when he saw what physiological psychologists do, he knew that he had found his niche. He stayed on at Illinois and received his Ph.D. Then, after a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Iowa, Carlson came to the University of Massachusetts, where he’s been ever since.

When he arrived at UMass, Carlson established a laboratory where he investigated the role of the limbic system in species-typical and learned behaviors, continuing work he had done at the University of Illinois. He received several Biomedical Research Support Grants and a research grant from NICHD. As he became more involved in textbook writing, Carlson began to focus his attention more and more on this activity and on his teaching.

Carlson took the opportunity afforded by his first sabbatical leave to write the first edition of Physiology of Behavior. He very much enjoyed the experience, and this endeavor taught him much more about behavioral neuroscience. He was gratified with the positive response of his students and of the colleagues who adopted the book. The pleasure provided by this response and by the enjoyment of keeping up with the literature and writing about it has kept him going for 12 editions. (He has no plans to stop writing.)

Carlson retired from UMass in the fall of 2004 but continues to keep up with developments in the field of behavioral neuroscience and to revise his book. The Psychology Department has kindly let him keep an office at the university, which makes it easier for him to continue interacting with his former colleagues.

Carlson’s interests outside of writing include spending time with his family, traveling, fly fishing, skiing, and flying his small airplane.

As an undergraduate psychology major at Cornell University, Melissa A. Birkett discovered courses in biopsychology, behavior, endocrinology, and evolutionary psychology. There, she was introduced to interdisciplinary research incorporating multiple perspectives in the challenging task of understanding behavior. She became interested in learning about behavior and its underlying mechanisms. She worked as an undergraduate research assistant in several laboratories on projects ranging from insect behavior to sleep in undergraduates. Those formative experiences and interactions with several influential research mentors convinced her to pursue a career in research.

Melissa completed her PhD in the Neuroscience and Behavior program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (where Neil Carlson was a faculty member at the time). While there, she received training in visual neuroscience and psychopharmacology. Her interest in neuroscience and behavior grew to encompass the importance of effective teaching and pedagogy and she concurrently earned a master’s degree in science education.

In 2007, she accepted a faculty position at Northern Arizona University in the Department of Psychological Sciences. Melissa currently conducts research related to the stress response and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in neuroscience, psychopharmacology, and the teaching of psychology. Each semester, she supervises student researchers and seeks to provide them with the kinds of opportunities she found valuable as a student. Her work has been recognized with awards for both outstanding teaching and teaching innovation, and she has contributed to several publications on best practices in teaching neuroscience.

Melissa is excited for the opportunity to contribute to the twelfth edition of Physiology of Behavior and hopes that this text continues to engage new students, introducing them to this fascinating interdisciplinary field.

Outstanding

Books of historical humor are of two types: those that are more funny than factual and those that are more factual than funny. This one is the latter type. You will find no laugh-out-loud hilarity here. No doubt it is clever, entertaining, and amusing, but you won't split your sides laughing. It is solidly fact-based, however, and you can really learn from it. You could even use it as a textbook. Bibliography included. The art work is outstanding!

Book 1 of the series covers a lot of ground, from the Big Bang to the Old Testament. Through the dinosaurs and the early hominids to the first civilizations at Egypt and Sumer, and points in between. Early agriculture, tools, and animal domestications. Nomadic tribes and warfare. Volume 4 follows the Israelites from Sumer to Egypt to Canaan to Babylon, with much violence along the way. But such was the Holy Bible!

A good overview, but not always an easy read, with so much material crammed into so few pages. Thirteen billion years of history in one book means that some of the kings tend to get jumbled together towards the end.

He is currently a lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutics, Biopharmacy and Biotechnology at the FU Berlin, working on new biotech drugs from natural sources and on the development of drug delivery carriers based on nanosuspension and solid lipid nanoparticle enterprise technologies.

Prof. Dr. Heribert Warzecha
Studied Pharmazie at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat, Mainz. After completing his Ph.D. in 1998, he worked first as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell, USA, and become associate Professor in wurzburg in 2001. Since 2007 he is full Professor at the technical university of Darmstadt and became dean of the Institute of plant science in 2009.

Advanced Text

This text is really more of a collection of review articles authored by different persons collected together in chapters and edited by the authors. I think it's good for what it is and someone with more background may rate it better than I did, but purchasers should know that this really isn't an introductory text. I was hoping for an "updated to 2013" introductory text that would include more basic explanations of techniques like PCR and explanations of the newer jargon at a level for someone with a M.S. in chemistry who took a biochemistry course in school 20 years ago and only remembers the basic DNA to RNA to protein pathway, cell organelles, basic structure of a virus etc. I think I'll have to find a different text of that type before I read this one. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

A First Course in Miracles

It's All Mind: The Simplified Philosophy of A Course in MiraclesAuthor Edwin Navarro's goal is to encourage individuals to challenge the ways in which they see and experience the world around them through his brief discussion of the essential elements of Helen Schucman's formidable 1,264-page "Course in Miracles." Schucman, an avowed atheist, claimed to have received the material for her Course by channeling instruction from Jesus. Navarro's familiarity with Schucman's three-part text is obvious as he deftly creates a well-balanced and cogent synopsis that is complete in itself while motivating readers to seek further dialogue with Schucman's work and the work of other writers in the genre. Were he to delve more deeply into his subject in a sequel, an intertextual investigation of like-minded authors, including Plato, the Taoists, Eckhart Tolle, for example, would likely be very well-received. This text is a morsel that will send an intelligent reader in search of a splendid repast.

not the whole story

As a long time fan of Marianne Williamson's writings & talks, and I was interested to see someone else's take on ACIM. I have also read ACIM and completed the lessons.

This is readable and very succinct - but it is a very short book. I don't think any book of this length could do complete justice to ACIM. Though I can't say I totally agree with some of his interpretation of ACIM's philosophies, I did find thought-provoking his discussion of what forgiveness really is.

I'm not convinced I would have gotten much out of this book if it were my first introduction to the philosophy, but I will probably refer back to it occasionally as a quick reminder of a few of the high points I've studied in more depth.

A book for all spiritual seekers

As explained in the Introduction, no matter how good the teachings are in ACIM, many people find the book difficult to read. Edwin Navarro has done the world a great favor by simplifying the philosophy in ACIM and put it in a little book. I particularly admire the author's insights and clear explanations on the differences between religious teachings and those in ACIM, such as God and forgiveness. I highly recommend this book to all spiritual seekers.

Useful for Cultivating respectful guests versus rude tourists

I have a fascination with the country, culture and people of India and it is my dream to one day go there. An Indian friend advised me that it would take "studying" to prepare myself to go. I took this to heart and began looking for resources to accomplish this task. He understood that I would not want to offend the natives while I was a guest in their country but he explained that the natives would be burdened with the fear of offending ME if I was in error. I think this book is perfect for the objective of understanding not only what customs to respect but why those customs are in place. I found this book answering so many of my questions about why there are so many differences in the customs I have observed due to the religious and geographical regions. I was influenced to select this book by another review of a native of India who recommends this book to his friends before they travel to India. That gave me the extra bit of confidence I was looking for before finalizing my decision to purchase this book. I am so pleased and delighted with this book, I am absorbing each page. It is not a book about where to stay or what to see but more a book about culture and clues to recognizing the differences in the various people groups. The author deciphers such things as how a woman ties her sari or a man is dressed revealing where someone is from and what religions are associated with. I believe this book will help me meet my objective to be a responsible traveler where I am a respectful guest versus a rude (albeit ignorant)tourist.

I was a motivated reader: I read this after I returned from a month with my new wife's family in India. The book helps me understand and deal with patterns that were hard to anticipate or accept. It is the first treatment I have ever seen, of the difficulty I have as a Mason-Dixon Line baby boomer becoming functional in the employer/servant relationship that is part of India (whether you like it or not), and the oddly (to American eyes) hierarchical behavior I have sometimes seen in the software industry. It contains a wealth of information for readers of either gender, and the longer you plan to stay in India, the more useful is the covered material. The well-spoken female author addresses details of the uniquely woman's world in India that can help me understand the forces at play in my wife's life there and in her perceptions and habits in the US. The flip side is that the author has less to offer about relationships between men, but capitalistic globalization's male domination suggests that topic will be covered in another book, "Speaking of India: Bridging the Communication Gap When Working With Indians" when I get to it.
Because of its extreme diversity, to go deeper into India would have required the author to write separate books for each region, so I thought she did an excellent job and stopped where she had to. I found Culture Shock! India compelling to the end.

Insights were spot-on, prepared me well for 1-week business trip

I purchased this book in preparation for my first-ever business trip to India. I returned just last week and am so pleased with the insights and knowledge this book provided me with prior to my visit. I don't mean to exaggerate, but there were dozens of experiences during my stay where I said to myself, "This is exactly what the book taught me!". I found myself in many unexpected situations, like in some family homes, where I was very well prepared to not make a total fool of myself, and at the same time understand many of the things that were going on. I didn't purchase any other guides, but also did not feel like I was lacking in any area after returning from the trip. Yes, the book does cater to a slightly broader audience (to include those who are staying long-term), but even for a quick business trip the information in the book was relevant, detailed, accurate, and exceptionally helpful. It doesn't take long to read so don't be tempted to skim... I was surprised how useful some of the topics were in practice.

Intimate Apparel is about the empowerment of Esther, a proud and shy seamstress in 1905 New York who creates exquisite lingerie for both Fifth Avenue boudoirs and Tenderloin bordellos. In Fabulation Nottage re-imagines Esther as Undine, the PR-diva of today, who spirals down from her swanky Manhattan office to her roots back in Brooklyn. Through opposite journeys, Esther and Undine achieve the same satisfying end, one of self-discovery.

Lynn Nottage’s plays include Crumbs from the Table of Joy; Mud, River, Stone; Por’ Knockers; Las Menias; Fabulation and Intimate Apparel, for which she was awarded the Francesca Primus Prize and the American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award in 2004. Her plays have been produced at theatres throughout the country, with Intimate Apparel slated for 16 productions during the 2005–2006 season.

The choice of this woman in this world, the journey she goes on, even the joining of her best, only friend, with her ordinary husband these are both always unexpected and yet the truth of them humanly inevitable. THis is a GREAT play, perhaps Lynn Nottage's greatest though it came after RUINED.
