Murder examines the socio-cultural construction of murder, specifically the interpersonal murder of intimates and acquaintances, and the manners by which these constructions have changed throughout historical and contemporary contexts. The authors focus on constructions and utilize a case study approach in an effort to understand why murderers are considered to be categorically different from the rest of society. The case study method also allows one to examine how the development of a narrative story affects dimensions that are both related to and unrelated to the crime itself; how law enforcement officials construct the crime, how the prosecution and defense construct their own interpretation of the crime given the evidence, how the media determines newsworthiness and presents their own perspective of the crime, and how the public reacts to the various constructions to develop their own understanding of the crime. Murder consists of three overarching themes. Chapters one and two discuss some of the theoretical and empirical issues surrounding the study of murder. Social, cultural, and legal definitions of murder are considered and are followed by an underlying advocacy for qualitative research given the problems of existing data and the need to provide a more contextual understanding of murder. Subsequent discussion examines the social construction of murder and murderers and how such constructions are associated with notions of evil. Chapters three through six address the murder of intimates and acquaintances through an examination of perpetrators and victims. The focus is placed upon women who murder male or female intimates or acquaintances, children who murder children, men who murder intimate or domestic female partners, and men who murder their male friends or acquaintances. Each perpetrator and victim typology begins with a conceptual and theoretical overview of the existing literature and supplements the review with a case study. Chapter seven brings the discussion full-circle. Interpersonal themes that underlie murders, murderers, and victims may have some similarities and differences, but the single theme that links them all together is the continual attempt to label the offender as a social anomaly. Importantly, the authors argue that such a broad generalization must be contextualized. To develop a genuine understanding of intimate or acquaintance murder, one must consider the prevalent socio-cultural, historical, and structural mechanisms that exist within society. The strength of this book is its ability to move beyond the convention of presenting quantitative aggregates and analyses of trends that are followed by discussions of historical and contemporary theories to explain behavior. Socio-cultural constructions arguably underlie all social phenomenon and it is important to recognize and critically assess their effect on how one views the world. In terms of weaknesses, many of the major points to be taken from the book were redundantly discussed in every chapter, which may be frustrating to some readers. Additionally, the attempt to develop a gendered understanding of murder walks a fine line between actually developing the understanding and simply offering a reductionist position. That is, the explanatory focus on themes of masculinity and femininity offered in discussions of offender and victim typologies seems to suggest that gender determines behavioral tendencies. Careful reading will note, however, that gender is one dynamic in a multitude of considerations that must be made to truly understand the murder of intimates and acquaintances. Murder is an excellent follow-up to an introductory text on murder or homicide. Students, academics, or practitioners interested in the topics of murder, social constructions of violence, contextual analyses, and those interested in the relationship between criminal justice and the media will find the text particularly relevant. The ilustrations are the best part of this recipies book

Allende's book of recipies is not what some readers, like myself, might expect from the author of such good pieces of literature as The House of Spirits and The Infinite Plan (to name just two). Unlike Laura Esquivel, author of Like Water for Chocolate, Allende did not accomplished a work that put together the art of cooking and sensuality and still can be call literature, just a simple book of recipies. It can be said that part of the content of this book consists of some recycle material from previous works by Allende. However, the selection of the ilustrations and the art work is very good (and the edition certainly atractive).

Isable Allende logra en su libro, no solo revivir el placer por la vida, sino por los detalles que hacen que la vida tenga una verdadera razon de ser. Nada como el disfrutar de los pequenos placeres que la vida misma nos ofrece y que tenemos al alcanze de la mano. La pasion que tanto buscamos fuera de nosotros esta ahi, dentro de cada uno esperando ser rescatada del limbo al que la destinamos por el simple miedo de experimentar y ser sencillamente nosotros.

Como buena Peruana siempre he tenido gran respeto y admiración por la Señora Allende , me parece realmente íncreible como puede definir con tal exactitud la descripción de las cosas. Afrodita un libro claramente lleno de afrodisíacos pero también anécdotas que pueden hacer a más de uno sonreir en el recuerdo. Gracias a Isabel Allende es que a la corta edad que tengo ha despertado en mí el placer por la lectura y el sosiego al escribir. Sería para mí un sueño digno el conocerla algún día.

Unlike the dozens of self-help books that focus on the clock or the way people spend their time, they offer a "principle-centered" approach to time management that emphasizes what "represents our vision, values, principles, mission, conscience, direction--what we feel is important and how we lead our lives." The authors argue that central to our lives are "four needs and capacities--to live, to love, to learn, to leave a legacy." The ideas here are not only clearly explained but are reinforced by scenarios from the authors' lives and self-directed activities for the reader. An unexpected life-changer

I have to get a couple of things out of the way right now to make you understand why this book has been so important to me (and could be to you as well). First, I am definitely someone who shuns most self-help tomes--I think most of them are crutches for weak people too lazy to get their acts together or too clueless to embrace a little common sense. Second, my prior experiences with the Covey cult were less than satisfying, as I had a boss (now departed) who talked the Covey talk but did not (I now see) truly walk the walk. This book differs from the _7 Habits_ texts in that it really deals with taking the general Covey concepts ("principle-centered living") and giving them a practical sheen--in this case by applying them to time management. Learning to divide my activities between "urgent" and "important," planning my life around certain "roles" that I have to fill, and composing a "mission statement" (a much more realistic and helpful version of year 2000 New Year's resolutions for me)--these were the concepts that have really helped me organize my life as efficiently as possible (and I was already pretty organized). I highly recommend buying the book and then following up by getting a Franklin Covey planner, where you can take the lessons from the book and start building your time and life around them. I have loaned the book to several friends and students (I teach high school) and all of them have benefitted from it in some way or another. Buying _First Things First_ will be one of the best things you can do for yourself.
And I can't believe I just wrote a positive review of a self-help book. Trust me on how helpful this book can be.

From Covey cynic to convert

I admit it, I was a Covey cynic. I hadn't read him, but had heard him quoted ad nauseum. Now, I'm a convert. This thoughtful book transforms bland time management techniques into tools for re-examining your life in terms of personalized mission statements. In this rushed world, the idea of deeply knowing what you want out of life and making sure that your activities fit in with that knowledge is radically different. Balance is emphasized, with that balance organized around your roles in life and real human needs, "to learn, to live, to love and to leave a legacy." Covey divides all activities into four quadrants: 1.Important and Urgent (crises, deadline-driven projects) 2.Important, Not Urgent (preparation, prevention, planning, relationships) 3.Urgent, Not Important (interruptions, many pressing matters) 4.Not Urgent, Not Important (trivia, time wasters)
The idea is to keep your activities primarily in the second category and to consciously choose activities because of what's important, not because of what's urgent. Covey et al also provide a list of the "Wisdom Literature" from around the world to help you ground your personal mission and life goals in the philosophies that have explored these ideas through the centuries. Don't try to read this book without allowing plenty of reflection time. After you've read the book, you'll allow plenty of reflection time for everything.

A Worthwhile Read even for time management junkies

The Stephen R. Covey engine has kicked out numerous books on self-help, and they consult 200 out of the top 500 Fortune companies. After all of those books and years, they have heard enough stories and waded through enough crisis situations to get a good handle on what works and does not work in all of those environments.

Now, if you've read every book they're written, then undoubtedly you're going to begin this book and say "I've read this all before". Naturally, when they begin a book, they have to assume that some readers haven't read the other books yet. They have to catch them up on the background and basics. If you don't need that primer, then skim for a while. It's not a bad thing, it's a normal thing. It's how book writing works :) If you pick up book 5 of Harry Potter, you still have to go through a little bit of scene setting for the .00002% of the population who skipped the other books and lept into Book 5.

So now, onto the key points of this specific book. Time management is good. Organizing your goals is good. But all of these things are only good if your goals are actually valid ones. If you spend all your time creating to-do lists, and carefully plotting out weekly goals ... but your goal is to get a "bigger fur coat" while your children are starving and you're miserable at work, something is out of sync. This book is all about making sure that what you do is what you REALLY want to do. It's about a higher level of time management.

So they're not saying the other time management systems are bad. They explicitly say that each has its place in life! However, if you work very hard every day to climb a ladder, and find after many years that the ladder you've climbed was against the wrong wall, then you'll be very disappointed. You should always make sure you are working for a goal that you really feel is important at a basic moral level.

This isn't a book to just plow through in an hour and see what you remember. It's asking you to really think about why you do things in life. Is it because your parents harassed you when you were young, and you want to get a flashy car to prove you're something? Do you try to out-do your co-workers even if it hurts your home life? Sometimes these answers don't come easily. If they did, I imagine we wouldn't need a book to help us sort them out.

This is a good book to read a chapter, then put down for a while. Go back and read another one, then think about it for a while. The basic concept is easy enough to understand. Divide your tasks up based on what category they fall into -

Quadrant I - urgent, important

Quadrant II - not urgent, important

Quadrant III - urgent, not important

Quadrant IV - not urgent, not important

Sounds easy, yes? But how many of us get sucked into a ton of "urgent" but really not important tasks for all sorts of reasons? It's the planning - the Quadrant II time - that can help fix those issues. But we have to make time to plan. If your life is full of incessant urgent demands, it may seem impossible to do this. But it can be done.

A hard idea to wrap your mind around is that we all only have 24 hrs a day. Leonardo Da Vinci, Ghandi, every one of us has 24 hrs. You might say "Well but I have 3 kids at home". True! So in your life, you made children your priority. You wanted those kids! So embrace that, and accept that as your mission. Put aside other less important things. We all make choices in life about what is important to us. When we make those choices, we should accept that, be happy with that, and find ways to emphasize our time in those areas. You have to choose to spend the time on things you love - not to divide your time up amongst various things that are "OK". That's what the main lesson is here. Focus on what is most important - don't try to do 80 quadrillion things that are all "OK". It can't work.

She's at it again!!

When you read as many paranormal books as I do, especially when they are series books by the same author, they seem to run together, story lines become so similar it's like reading the same book over and over with different names attached. This fortunately isn't the way this series has gone. Mrs. Richards has managed once again to bring fresh new conflict to the shifter world. New characters that we had only heard about in previous books become the central and main Hero's in this installment of the Wolves of StoneRidge series.
*MINOR SPOILERS*
Derek Sommers is the brother of Deke who we met a while back in another book. Deke has just recently gotten his book with his mate the wolf shifter Luther. Deke had been disowned by his family and unable to communicate with his only brother Derek. In this, Derek's book we find out why. Not only that, but that Derek has been keeping a secret that he can no longer hide.
Now, a while back Edwin, the scientist who works for the CIA was working on finding ways to aid in human healing. He had a lab with several animals and one shifter. He met his mate when the Wolves got wind of the shifter being held and went to rescue him. Edwin would have never kept the rat if he had know. It was a shifter, after all he was raised by a puma shifter and would never tell of their existence. Byron and he work it out and their story gets told. Edwin's godfather, (the puma) mentioned before above, his name is Dillian. He comes to Colorado to visit his godson and formally meet his mate. What he doesn't expect is to almost run over his own mate! This of course is their story and how they fight the odds that are against them to be together. It ends up being a story of estranged family reunited, a boy becoming his own man, finding out that it doesn't make you less of a man to depend on help from those that care about you and mostly, being who you are and being happy with it is way more important than trying to be what others think you should.
Overall, this was a very good addition to the series collection, one I know I will revisit in the future! Well Done Charlie!

courage to decide to fight for happiness

The road from childhood to adulthood is a slippery slope indeed when you don't transition from needing your parents guidance to making your own decisions. The need to please your parents is so tempting and can be so hard to give up especially when the bond is built on unstable foundation. Derek Sommers can handle the judicial court room including the Law with panache and authority; what he cannot handle is his relationship with his parents.With a mother who never listens, who finds it so easy to look the other way, worst is dealing with his father who is domineering and controlling. Derek finds himself wavering in his desire to make his father proud since realizing some goals are unattainable. Deciding to remove himself entirely he unconsciously seeks his estranged brother Deke. This new uncertain life direction lands him spiritlessly into Dillan Shoreman arms and home. Dillan is confident, strong of character and loyal he is also a drop dead sexy feline shifter. This rugged man knows what he wants and knows how to get it. He is bowled over at first scent after meeting Derek; wanting to protect this tired gorgeous man even from himself. In every life there is a moment a pivotal moment where you have to stop running and look around to see if your reality is worth fighting for. Derek has arrived at that moment in Dillans arms and heart; giving him the strength to stand and deliver his fight to live the life that truly makes him happy and cherished. Dillan has no doubts that he will stand by his man come what may even a shifter knows that you only get one life to live; and Derek is his heart ..his forever. This story is filled with hope and courage to walk with head held high toward a promising loving future.

Inconclusive Plot Device

Dillian is a cat shifter, specifically a mountain lion. He's finally taking a vacation and visiting his godson in Stone Ridge. Derek wanders into Stone Ridge, wanting to make amends with his brother Deke. Both men meet up and the attraction is strong. This is a fast mating and Derek has never been with a man, has shown interest but never acted on it. From the hot tub, laundry room, and bedroom, these two had enough sex in a few days . .. Yes, the mating took and then some. Very little plot. It's all about the meet and greet and getting it on.

So Dillian calls a friend to recover a folder of incriminating evidence from a safe. Does the retrieval happen and contents known? No! Nothing is said! This folder and threat is how Derek was kept in line by his father. It's a part of the plot, a big part. It affects Derek's ability to work in a job he's trained for. Because this was a simple thing yet so vital to this story, I'm giving this one a 2.5 stars. . - Dan's Wife

Great, but a few complants.

So, let's star off with complants. First of all, when you said that when Obi-Wan said that Anakin was great pilot when he met him, he was correct. Thats my only complant. Now I loved the book. If I had to pick which was better, I would pick sith. Keep making the Star Wars books. I recomend this book for Star Wars fans. :)
