Flow to go

I have read many books which are directly about or recount examples of synchronicity and this is the one that absolutely resonated with my life experiences. If you cannot figure out why sometimes everything just clicks into place and why sometimes roadblocks show up at every turn AND you are willing to accept responsibility for the way your fears, prejudices, hopes, beliefs, experiences and dreams control the flow of your life, then this is the book for you. This book shows you how to assimilate key principles of self-awareness, self-love, trust, acceptance, gratitude, and responsiblity in very practical ways. If the exercises are done correctly they begin a very intense, honest, and ongoing self-examination of everything you hold dear or fear in this life. If you are ready to take the risk of coming face to face with who you truly are as a person, then buy this book. The benefit is that you become much surer of who you are, clearer on what you want from life and more directed on how you need to accomplish it. This book rates as one of the most valuable books I've ever purchased.

March 1, 2011: I am re-reading this book as I have done periodically over the years. I just noticed something today on page 24 that I just wanted to note. There is a partial quote at the bottom of page 24 (softcover) that reads "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.' This quote in the book is incorrectly attributed to Nelson Mandela but is in fact a quote from US author Marianne Williamson. The full quote can be found in Marianne Williamson's book "A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles (1992)". This small error aside (which can be verified on WikiQuotes) I still rate this book as one of the most valuable I have ever purchased.

Assigning Meaning to Coincidence..... After The Fact.....Can Reveal the Interconnected Nature of the Universe!!

Let me save you from wasting several hours of your life that you will never get back. Here is this whole book in two bullet points:

> If you assign meaning to some random event....retroactively....now that event is "synchronicity."

> If you manage to retroactively assign meaning to a series of random events....that's "flow"

If you get really good at assigning meaning to unrelated random events that occur in your life ..... after the fact...so that you can create a story about how they are actually "related," then you apparently become a "flow master!"

This book is 300 pages (Kindle version) of accounts of how people have assigned meaning to some coincidence and then made a subsequent decision based on the meaning that THEY ASSIGNED to the event, and how this is "evidence" that the whole universe is interconnected etc.

Here's an example to illustrate (this is not taken directly from the book, but it illustrates the fallacy of the entire premise of this book):

- Janie was walking along through the park one day. She was preoccupied with the deteriorating state of her relationship with her boyfriend of 3 years. As she walked along, a dead squirrel suddenly fell from a tree and landed right in front of her. She observed this, and decided that she should end her dying relationship with her boyfriend. A week later, she met Gavin, the man that she has now been happily married to for 10 years! -

OK, great. But couldn't THIS have happened just as easily.....

- Janie was walking along through the park one day. She was preoccupied with the deteriorating state of her relationship with her boyfriend of 3 years. As she walked along, a dead squirrel suddenly fell from a tree and landed right in front of her. She observed this, and decided that she could not let her relationship die and come crashing to the ground like the squirrel. She decided right then and there to dedicate herself to saving the relationship and immediately went home and asked her boyfriend to see a counselor with her. She has now been happily married to him for 10 years! -

Identical "meaningful coincidence" in both cases, but the "meaning" and the resulting outcome based on what the person did in response to experiencing this "meaningful coincidence" are EXACT OPPOSITES in each case.

Here's the beauty of the "skill" that these authors claim to teach readers to "master": whatever "meaning" you assign to some random event AFTER THE FACT, or connection you create between totally unrelated things that coincide, you are ALWAYS RIGHT!! So this whole concept must be totally sound!!! Amazing.

There's an account of a guy who was purportedly "thinking about breaking plate glass with a hammer" when moments later a "rock hit his windshield and cracked it!!" Amazing evidence of "synchronicity" right? Interview enough people, as these authors have (who I should point out were people who already believe in this stuff), and you can find tons of stories like this.

You won't find stories about the guy who was driving along...thinking about how badly he needed to urinate...when all of a sudden a rock hit his windshield...in this book because even though unrelated meaningless events like this happen all the time...in the latter case the guy did not identify this as a "meaningful coincidence" and end up in a "focus group" of people who would then report this to the authors. He could have though...just imagine..... "Dave was driving home having left the office really late. He knew his wife was already angry with him missing the dinner she had specially prepared to celebrate their anniversary. He had left the office in such a hurry that he skipped using the restroom even though he had not made a trip there for several hours. Dave was in excruciating pain. For the first time in his life, he thought his bladder might actually rupture. A few moments later a rock hit his windshield! Dave knew immediately that if he did not stop to relieve himself, his bladder would break open just like his windshield had just broken....so he pulled over at the next service station." Amazing!! Or maybe Dave just really had to pee and then a rock hit his windshield......

This book is a perfect example of people who already believe something going out and finding as many examples as they can to confirm what they already believe. It's the exact opposite of science...where you have a theory and then look for ways to test it by causing it to fail, and then if it does not fail, you can confirm it's accurate.

If you are already inclined to believe the premise of this book, you will LOVE it!! There are so many examples the authors have collected that you can use to reinforce what you already believe! If you are a person equipped with even a tiny whiff of critical thinking skill, ask yourself: "Is my time valuable at all?" If the answer to that question is "yes," spend it doing nearly anything other than reading this book.

Keenan, the lead singer and songwriter for the Grammy-winning alternative metal group Tool, labels himself a world class multitasker in his e-mail signature, and first-time author Jensen details all of Keenan s various enterprises leader of musical side projects A Perfect Circle and Puscifer; owner and winemaker of the Caduceus Cellars winery; aspiring actor and comedian in this entertaining biography, which also serves as a glimpse into one of the more important and influential bands of the 1990s. Sure to please Tool s many fans, Jensen s look at Keenan s development as an individual and an artist is comprehensive, covering Keenan s Midwestern youth and his time serving in the Army (which supported his subsequent time in art school), his life in Boston working in a pet store, and his move to Los Angeles in the late 1980s, where, along with bands such as Rage Against the Machine, Tool helped redefine the sound of metal ( The primal scream was the key to making it sound sincere ) and carefully developed a radical stage show. The Imaginarium of Mr. Keenan

Let me start off by saying that if you are a Tool fan looking for a deeper insight into the band this is not the book for you. If however you are interested in the many facets of the man who has gifted his audience throughout the years with his multiple projects, and how he has been able to leverage his creativity throughout his career this IS the book for you. I truly feel that this book is a gift to his audience. Even if you are not a die-hard fan of his music you can be inspired by this story. I have followed Maynard's many ventures including Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle, Merkin Vineyards, Caduceus Cellars, etc.. I have been to his tasting room in Jerome, multiple wine tasting events, numerous concerts (Tool, APC, and Puscifer), and have been strongly inspired by Maynard.

Anyone that has followed Maynard's career knows that he has never really given his audience the full story whether it be lyrics to a song, or insights into his personal life. This book is a chance for the people who have been inspired by Maynard to learn about his own inspirations and creative path. The book is written in such a way that you can relate to it very well and like all of his work it's an opportunity to leverage as a source of creativity. I hope that everyone approaches this book with an open mind and is able to have the impactful experience that it is capable of providing. If you are interested enough to check a review on this book, please do yourself a favor and READ IT. I am not writing this book as a fan of Tool or as a fan of Maynard, but I'm writing this as a fan of A Perfect Union of Contrary Things.

P.S. Someone wrote a review about this book being a money grab. I checked out the other reviews this person has written to see how credible of a source she might be. This is her review of CliffsNotes on The Bible, Revised Edition: "i was hoping for a basic bible book. and it starts off about the old testament and uses words that i don't understand. was hoping it would be basic, almost 5th grade level, and it wasn't. thus i am more confused... i stopped after 10 pages. and feel bad."

Not up to expectations

While "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" was never publicized as a book about Tool, Puscifer, or A Perfect Circle and was resolutely promoted as a book about Maynard, it still didn't live up to what I've come to expect in a musician/artist biography.

I'd hoped it'd be written in Maynard's own words, with his insights, wit, and coruscations pulsing through its narrative and hovering between the biographic and philosophic.

Instead, it's a dry journalistic piece that chronicles his life as one would a long ago historical figure that contemporary authors no longer have access to. "A Perfect Union" simply runs through the chronology of where Maynard lived, what he did, and who he met. While that has merit, I think that a subject as complex and intriguing as Maynard James Keenan deserved a more in depth biography than what's offered here. Personally, I find magazine interviews with Maynard, where he shares his thoughts on politics, music, art, wine, and other topics to be more entertaining than this biography.

Interesting Read but Sluggish Prose

If you're a fan of all things MJK, you'll want to read this book (I didn't know he got married before the Puscifer show I saw in Louisville! I didn't know how interesting his taste in books would be!) but if you're "just" a Tool fan, no. While I'm a huge all things MJK fan, I got tired of the tone of the book. I enjoyed learning more about an artist I've followed for 20 years, but therein is my bias - this book could've been written with Stephanie Mayer (the Twilight lady? Spelling?) and I'd have bought it. As an educator, I think Maynard's dedicated attitude to his creative pursuits (well documented and clearly evident in this book) might make this book a gift to younger folks pursuing the arts (for those of you holiday shopping). I liked the snippets from Maynard's own mouth best, as well as family and friends' thoughts, but the narrative was very sluggish.

I was confused: it was a song on ‘Issues’ that made me resolve to leave an abusive relationship; it was listening to KoRn that made me want to stay sober. Was I missing something? What happened? I would have given my eye-teeth to have been a ‘rock star’, hugely successful no less, and I couldn’t think of one reason why anyone would want to let that go.

I binge read his first three books over a weekend and what emerged was a somewhat sad, albeit familiar, story of a boy who grew up angry and with poor self-esteem, and by hard work and a stroke of good fortune started his early adulthood with fame and wealth complete with all of the privileges and indulgences that accompany it. He was given the golden ticket only to find it took him to a place that was abysmally void. But, as he was to find out, that was the ride, not the destination. He told his story honestly, and at times allowed stabs of unresolved emotion to emerge above the surface, bearing evidence that this was not an autobiography told in full; this was the beginning.

WMEWO is what happened during the in between, the life he negotiated with his new found Faith. This is how he fought to be a good father, a successful entrepreneur, continue to engage his talent as a musician, and most of all, be a happy person, and how none of that came easy.

I was overjoyed to read about his journey back to KoRn, and the way he can look at his absence not as God taking him away, but as God preparing him to go back. It’s very touching to read the stories of him praying with fans alongside his band mate and brother through Christ, Fieldy. Of course ignorant fans would mock them; it can be overwhelming for those who don’t know to stand in the presence of the Lord.

I appreciate the candor he brings to this book, and that he has retained his humor. He shared some deeply personal stories about financial mishaps and near ruin. The challenges of being a single father to his daughter were heart wrenching, but I couldn’t help but find myself thinking how lucky she is to have a father who won’t give up on her, or their relationship.

His Faith is a driving force for him that he is eager and unashamed to share. Be you Christian or not, reading about his life so far, his ability to fall, to persevere, and to rise again, is admirable.

As for me, I have learned that Brian didn’t have one reason to walk away from a ‘rock star’ life...he had a million. And why he came back was backed by a force far greater than money, fame, and possessions. I love to see life come full circle.

Thanks Brian

Not that many people lay themselves open the way Brian does. Most people would rather not admit the things he admits, or try to dress them up in some way, knock the edges off to make it more palatable. I so appreciate Brian's writing for this reason. I've read a lot of rock bios and most of the time people can admit to some dirt but rarely take on the emotional tolls they had to pay, the books are written more for entertainment, to gawk inside the life of a celebrity and all the crazy stuff they did, than to be inspired by anything. I like looking into Brian's heart and appreciate his showing it. That's courageous and inspiring in and of itself. He doesn't have to be a superhero with all the answers and everything plastered with a happy smiley face to make this book inspiring. It's inspiring to know you can be in the dirt and cast your eyes to the sky and know something in your heart beyond this human realm is there for you.
I hope Brian keep writing about his maturing spiritual journey so I can read about it while I'm on my own journey.

Head's message to Millennials

I have always loved Korn and when I was selected to review this I was super EXCITED! I have been a Korn fan since I was a little kid rocking out to Shoots and Ladders (I had an awesome older sibling!). Brian "Head" Welch, was the original guitarist for the bad and left the band when he got sober to raise his daughter. The book's main focus is Brian's journey as a new Christian and recovering addict. It is a very down to Earth presentation of the ups and downs that come with turning your life around.

I really did enjoy the book. Head's voice was real, down to earth, and even though he admitted to many mistakes in the book he definitely handled it with integrity. I think that anyone who is trying to turn their life around, a new Christian, a recovering addict, or just your average joe, can benefit from this book. Mainly because when an addict becomes sober and or when a person is trying to improve their relationship with the God of their understanding; it is a difficult road that most give up on before they reach the finish line. Everyone can benefit from hearing an open and honest representation oh what turning your life around is really like! I also commend him for being so open to share it with the world.

I also think that as a millennial, this book is very relate-able. You see Head's daughter (Jennea), went through a lot of similar problems as most of the people in our generation. It is really awesome to see both parties (millennial and parent) taking personally responsibility. I also loved hearing about the mission work that Head and other members of Korn. It is a short read, its a little over 200 pages. But it if you are a reader, you will definitely finish it in a few days.

Not worth the money

Since this is a required textbook for nursing school, I know my opinion doesn't really matter, but I felt the need to say something. Now that I'm halfway through the semester I'm realizing what a let down this book is. It's written plainly, and simply, so it's easy to understand. The problem is there's barely any questions provided for you to quiz yourself. Each chapter has only 3-5 questions and a few critical thinking objectives. I thought the online resources and CD might help, but the only thing extra there is one case study per chapter. This is kind of helpful, and at least includes rationales. I was expecting much more from a massive book I paid well over $100 for (although now it's only 65)

He shows how social, cultural, and economic factors interacted with politics, and stresses as a major theme the tension between liberty and power that both characterized the period and forms part of its historical legacy. His explanations of republican theory and the fight over the Bank of the United States are particularly clear, and there are also good sections on slavery, the Indians, and the changing role of women. A great introduction to Jacksonian politics and the rise of the Democrat-Whig two party system. Not only does it provides a concise retelling of the political events of the period, both national and local, but it also serves as an introduction to how historians currently interpret these events, using the conceptual tools of the Market Revolution and the Republican tradition. Highly recommended!

Good overview of period and its implications for US history

I used Liberty and Power to teach the Jacksonian period to international students for a course on US History. The book started right where Gordon Wood's "Radicalism of the American Revolution" left off with the splintering of the Democrat-Republicans and the emergence of the Democrat Party. Because the book was not too long but still had some great ideas, it served very well as a textbook. The book does not go into an excruciating amount of detail, so it may not be ideal for those who desire primary source material. Probably Watson's best effort is seen in his description of the Democrat and Whig parties, their constituencies, and their platforms. He shines in showing how contemporary forces led to the creation of these parties, and how they continued to shape them.

I gave the book 4 stars because I am not entirely convinced by the message behind its title. One could argue that the struggle between "Liberty" and "Power" began not with the Whigs and Democrats, but could be traced back to the Federalists and Democrat-Republicans over the First B.U.S. in the 1790s or even the Federalists and Antifederalists over the ratification of the US Constitution. The National Republicans/Whigs can be interpreted as inheriting the Federalists' role as promoting the economic and fiscal strength of the nation. Furthermore, Watson himself states that both the Whigs and Democrats, as the children of the previous Democrat-Republicans portrayed themselves as the champions of liberty, with the Democrats casting "big money" and corruption as the enemies of liberty and the Whigs struggling against what they interpreted as Jackson's absolutism ("King Andrew") and partisanship which the Founding Fathers themselves decried.

Watson could have written a little more in Chapter 7 on Van Buren, Harrison, and Tyler. Quite a lot happened in these 8 years, including the rise of the railroads and the explosion of the Market Revolution. The events of these years also led to the Mexican War, which itself would have profound implications on the future unity of the nation.

I think the most important lesson learned from this book is how the American party system began, which has continued more or less into the modern age. The reader will see the role which religion played in government even in these early years, along with anti-immigration and fear of big government among other political sentiments which exist even today.
