Poor detail, no editing, missing and incorrect content, bogus testimonials.

Quick summary:
Poor detail, no editing, missing and incorrect content. Other testimonials assumed to be professional colleagues trying to throw her a favor; no way they actually used this. I clicked on their profiles to see if they generally write book reviews... Not one other book review as of 11/17/2013.

Ranting details:
I'm taking a break from my studies to write this because it's that frustrating and I recall seeing 5-star reviews on this. I'm convinced none of these are legit reviews from non-acquaintances of the author. I'm at page 137 but as it is getting worse, I'm going to go ahead and write the review now...
One nice thing is it has a spiral binding. It is easy to lay flat, flip pages around, etc. That's really it for positives.

The negative is this seems like someone just took their notes, printed them on the cheapest quality paper and started charging for it WITHOUT EDITING ANYTHING.
I started actually making note of the lack of any editing by page 37 which references the "tem" knowledge areas. Sure just a typo but they are rampant just like the bolding. In the lists, sometimes the following dash is bold, sometimes not. Bolding sometimes abruptly ends when there is a carriage return. There is some sort of spelling or formatting issue on average about every three pages.

Though these are annoying, I would have probably just knocked a star off for it. It gets really bad when you have examples like page 45. It's an answer sheet to one of the quizzes but just skips answer #16. On page 137 (at this point I decided to write this review) in explaining calculating duration it states, "Example- Activity A will take 80 person hours to complete. We have one person available half time and therefore we will estimate one week to complete the activity." One person working half time is 20 hours and they will do 80 hours work... in one week?

But really the content is lacking as well. Though some things are explained clearly, many of the inputs-technique-output lists are deliberately left incomplete with "not all listed". This information is the key to the exam though.

It tells you how to make flash cards for studying. I think anyone that made it through at least an undergraduate program knows how to make flash cards for studying so offering advice on how to make them is of little value. Other books actually have cut outs you can use.

I have Rita's book (CAPM Exam Prep) but it is for 4th edition PMBOK. Still I get much more out of it as it has more depth, and she seems to have hired an editor. I can fill in the differences between the 4th and 5th PMBOK editions on my own.

Amazing book!

Aileen's CAPM prep book along with her online sample questions helped me pass my CAPM exam after a short preparation period. I just used her book for about 2 weeks and online questions for about 3 days and I passed my exam at my first attempt today! A big thumb up!

Not bad, but needs a lot of editing.

I'm just a regular new grad trying to get a CAPM certification, but since PMI changed the edition and CAPM isn't that "popular," it was hard to find a book to prepare for the exam. Rita's book was published in September, but I couldn't find it anywhere in time for my exam (I took it in November). I found Aileen's book, read the reviews, and bought the book. The book is laid out by chapters aligned with the PMBOK. It is impossible to study from this book alone; well not impossible but it's not useful to study from this book alone. You have to read the chapters in PMBOK, read the chapter in this book, and take the test after the chapter in this book. The tests after the chapter helped me a lot.

For the negative things, this book needs editing more than anything else. It's very annoying when you're studying. For some tests, the answers were off. I think they were in a hurry to release the book, so they forgot to edit? Some ITTOs (inputs, tools & techniques, outputs) didn't have everything listed (it was done purposely). That was very, very annoying. I had to write that in every time I found the disconnect because when I study I want everything to be in there but this book didn't, I guess. Also another thing I didn't understand was the flashcards game. She tells us to write just the tools & techniques for each process, but why just the tools & techniques? I didn't get this part.. I gave up using the flashcards few chapters later.

Anyways, this book did help but it's not like I wouldn't have passed the test without it. I did pass the test, but I studied from another website along with the book and did a lot of practice tests. If you want to pass the test, skim through the book (PMBOK and use this for the chapter tests), memorize the process groups and knowledge areas. Try to logically memorize the ITTOs, it is impossible to memorize all of them but logically categorize them so you can recall them during the test. Hope this helps! Good luck!!

Great SAT preparation, ok story

Tooth and Nail is a fun mystery story that contains many SAT-level words in boldface and has a glossary in the back. I found this to be an effective way of increasing my vocabulary, because I got to see each word used in context. In combination with studying word roots (etymology), reading this book helped me increase my SAT I verbal score about 170 points. Why aren't there more SAT preparation books like this?
The story itself is about two incoming college freshmen who gradually find out that strange things are going on around the campus. It's not the most enjoyable story, but it is interesting and relevant to people who are preparing for the SAT (and, as others have said, a whole lot more fun than memorizing word lists).

Learning words in context is the best approach

Learning words in context is a great idea. It's the only method that works. This book was released in 1994 and for several years was the only one of its kind. But there are three new additions in this format--from Barrons, Kaplan, and A. J. Cornell Publications. Some people have complained that with this book it's problematic to have all the words at the back, in a glossary--because you have to keep stopping to find them back there. I agree with that. At least one of the above-mentioned books--The Wizard of Oz Vocabulary Builder--places the definitions on the same page as the words, and it seems to work well. Perhaps the next edition of this book can be reformatted that way.

OK, But not worth your studying time

While I found the story in this book quite interesting, I do not think that it significantly improved my vocabulary. By using an "SAT Word" once in the book, I did not learn that word. The same words should have been repeated more than once, when possible. Perhaps, as another review suggested, the definitions should appear at the bottom of the page and not in the back - constantly flipping to the glossary was detrimental to my reading experience. I would not reccomend buying this book to learn vocabulary words, although I think the approach has some merit.

Readers may be confused to read on one page that reptiles are cold-blooded and that dinosaurs were a kind of a reptile, and on the next that some may have been warm-blooded; otherwise, Cole mixes up-to-date facts and general statements with virtuoso skill, stirring in plenty of jokes, small subplots, and flights of fancy. One gruesome scene aside, Degen's full-color illustrations enhance both the humor and the information, featuring maps, charts, actual-size drawings of fossil teeth, plenty of dinos in action, and Ms. Frizzle's famous, ever-startling wardrobe. children of all ages will get just what they need from this

This is a great, almost un American book in that kids are told that it's OK, even wonderful and wondrous to be science geeks, be curious. Love the Frizz when she says "take chances, get messy, make mistakes," and encourages her students to explore. In a society that elevates sports and violence for boys, and beauty and cattiness for girls, this series stands out for encouraging gender neutral intellectualism and academic achievement. My geeky 5 year old can't get enough, having finally found fictional characters that reflect her and encourage her. Factual substance-wise, I as a 40 year old have learned tons.

The Magic School Bus Goes back to the time of the Dinosaurs

Head back in time with Ms. Frizzle and her class on a Dinosaur adventure. The book begins with the students in the classroom mentioning it is Visitors Day. Ms. Frizzle's class made the room into Dinosaur Land, displaying the book reports by each student on a table with the toy dinosaurs on another table.

On each page there are a few lines of text to follow the story of The Magic School Bus: In the Time of the Dinosaurs plus the inside pages of each report showing facts and interesting tidbits on each Dinosaur. There are two distinctions for the captions above each student. If there are a few bubbles leading to the student this is a thought they are having that adds to the story. The squared captions located at each person, throughout the book is part of their dialogue. In reading the story to a child you can differentiate between these quite easily.

Before any visitors show up Ms. Frizzle announces to her class that they were invited to a dinosaur dig. Some of the kids wondered what would happen to visitor's day if they just left but grabbed the toy dinosaurs and video camera on the way to the bus. " When you have the wackiest teacher in school, you need all the luck you can get!" Displayed on the pages are lists about fossils that were done by the students as they ride along the bus to the site.

The bus drove through to the present time where they ended up back at the site where the paleontologists were worried about them. Ms. Frizzle gave them some advice on where to find fossils and they headed back to their classroom. Once inside the classroom they made a chart of the trip and soon the visitor's arrived.

Each of the students had their family members look around the classroom admiring Ms. Frizzle. All the science projects were displayed and the computer was running a tape of Dinosaurs. The kids all agreed that the teacher was an interesting person that liked to explore science.

The very last page shows Ms. Frizzle standing on a ladder at a Dinosaur museum brushing the teeth on the T. Rex.

great book, great artist!

Neville brody is one of the best contemporary graphic designers, he needs no further presentation. This book is a collection of some of the great works he produced, going from magazine editorials and stamps, to publicity. It is a great inspiration source for me, for those working with graphic design and for those who simply like to appreciate a good artist an his work. Color pictures printed on good paper, very well produced. Excelent compillation of works. Enjoy it

The future revealed

This is one of those books I constantly use for reference. Nevill Brody for those of you who dont know is one of Englands preminent designers. This book is ricly colored and pleaseing to look at. As you would expect from the man who did the original layout for The Face and many other fringe magazines. The only problem I had with this book was the lack of relavent commentary from Brody himself. However, I feel this is still (along with Vol.1) a must read for and aspiring graphic designer.

Neville Brody, a great modern designer

In this second collection of Brody's work, it presents to us his use of the computer and its influence on his design. While his older work was more conservative, yet still radical for its time, his recent work truly embraces the digital age. It surpised me how easily Brody , a more traditional designer, can translate his ideas to a digital medium, but his work will continue to drive young designers to "copy" or to be inspired by his work.

I haven't read the book but I would like to. It seems ironic that it only seems to be available as a hardcover printed edition. As a bit of a nomad myself, I store my books in digital form for quick easy access antwhere. Surely of all the books that warrant being available as a digital version this is the one!

An Important Book For the Breed

Dr. Allen writes exactly like she talks and her expertise is obvious in this important book for the Neapolitan Mastiff breed.

The author does not sugar-coat anything and she is not sentimental, although she cares deeply about the breed and also that people understand what they are getting into. This shows throughout the book.

It may indeed seem to someone who is newly enamoured of the Neapolitan Mastiff that this book goes a little heavy on the "these are big monstrous dogs who can cause quite a lot of damage" but in fact, it is true! Sure, not every dog will do everything or have every problem but the fact is these are giant dogs who do not understand how big and clumsy they are and their human companions, especially those with children, must be aware of possibilities.

If you ARE aware of the potential problems you can be prepared to manage and ideally, prevent them. Everyone who falls in love with the breed absolutely LOVES the wrinkly, clumsy, adorable puppies. It is only when the little puppy begins to be the clumsy, active, wild-child adolescent that most people realize they may have bitten off more than they could chew, and it is when the dog reaches the young adult stage of two years of age or so that we see the results of that....dogs abandonned or turned over to rescue. Or even worse, dogs, who through well-meant but inapprpriate management for the Mastino, have been allowed to develop troubled personalities and temperaments which then gives the general public the idea that the entire breed is like this. This is a huge problem for all breed fanciers.

If people are properly educated BBEFORE they buy, and given the proper resources to help them AFTER they buy...well, then they can fully enjoy the power and majesty of owning the Neapolitan Mastiff. That's really the message in this book and the book provides a wealth of useful information. No, no one agrees 100% with everything...but that is true in all of life. And I submit to you that most expereinced breeders / owners of the Neapolitan Mastiff agree with 95-99% of what is in this book!

Properly managed owning the mastino is a wonderful experience.

Reading this book, and re-reading it, and re-re-reading it, can be a HUGE and useful part of that wonderful experience.

THIS BREED SHOULD NOT BE BOUGHT WITHOUT THIS BOOK

Thorough in nature, yet an easy flow of information palatable to anyone wanting to know the truth about the breed. The author is concise, passionate, and well versed on the topic with both decades of companionship and breeding Neos coupled with a Doctorates in Veterinary Sciences. This marriage gives Dr. Allen's book a most comprehensive find on Italian Mastiffs, ranging from breeding, feeding, behaviors, every topic incredibly observed on many levels. Full of exquisite photos of incredibly regal creatures. A must for anyone considering or owning a Neapolitan Mastiff.

"THE" book for Neopolitan owners.

As an owner, breeder and trainer I absolutely fell in love with the Neo. I have trained for Schutzhund, French Ring, Personal protection, and Handicap assistance. The Neo is one of the most intelligent animals I have ever worked with, but they are not for everyone. Dr. Allen tells it like it is and is up front and honest about the breed. I disagree with some minor points, but the book is 99% accurate. Read this before you fall in love with and buy your first puppy and you may save yourself heartbreak down the line.
