Coming of Age inside the Well of a T-34

Roughly 800,000 women served in the Soviet Armed Forces during World War II (also known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War): as pilots, snipers, machine gunners, tank crew members, and partisans. Of these, a quarter were decorated, and 89 received the highest honor, the Hero of the Soviet Union.

A number of children also fought in the war. Prior to WWII, the age of conscription for men was 19; just before the war began, it was lowered to 17. Teenagers and children fought in insurrections, belonged to youth movements, and in some cases, orphans were allowed join the Red Army in an official capacity. (Source: Wikipedia.)

In the graphic novel series KATUSHA: GIRL SOLDIER OF THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR, Wayne Vansant shines a light on these lesser-known aspects of World War II.

Refugees from their native country of Ukraine, BOOK 2: THE SHAKING OF THE EARTH sees Katusha and her adopted older sister Milla (“Big and Little Tymoshenko”) arrive in Russia just in time for the bombing of Stalingrad on August 23, 1942. The young women quickly graduate from partisans to militia members, as they’re recruited to defend the women and children still remaining in the city. In an attempt to keep them safe (wherein “safe” is a relative term), their father later arranges for them to attend tank driving school in Chelyabinsk. After several months of study, they’re sent to the front lines to fight with the Red Army, where Milla earns the honor of Hero of the Soviet Union for her bravery at the Battle of Prokhorovka in July 1943.

Katusha is just seventeen years old at the outset of Book 2; she celebrates her 18th birthday on the battlefield. KATUSHA is a coming of age story that takes place under the harshest conditions imaginable. Along with her budding feelings for an older officer, Katusha must come to grips with the violence, loss, and deprivations that are part of everyday life during wartime.

The middle of three installments, I’m having a difficult time rating Book 2: I entered to win copies of Books 1 and 2 through Goodreads, but only scored Book 2. And I’m not sure I enjoyed the story enough to purchase Book 1 on my own (or at least not at the current prices). While the war stories are easy enough to follow, I feel like I’m missing quite a bit of background information on the characters, especially Katusha and Milla, and their time in Ukraine prior to the beginning on WWII. (Um, Milla is sleeping with her uncle? I know she’s adopted, but still!) If you’re interested in the series, definitely read them in sequence from the beginning!

That said, the artwork is above par and the storytelling, engaging. There’s quite a bit of discussion about weaponry (particularly tanks) and battle strategy, which makes sense, but mostly bored me to tears. Vansant touches upon the female experience during wartime, though not in the detail I’d hoped. Milla’s backstory is especially engaging; I’d love for Vansant to delve into collectivization in Ukraine further. I was surprised to see so many families serving together (e.g., Katusha, Milla, and their Uncle Taras).

Katusha and Milla elect to fight as Russians in the “Patriotic War” in the hope that they may someday return home to their native Ukraine – making the series title somewhat ironic. Should they find their way back in Book 3, it will only be at a great cost.

Second of two--so far

This second book of the adventures of Katusha during World War II covers late 1942 through July 1943. This includes the Battle of Stalingrad and the creation of male/female tank crews by the Soviet high command. There's no shying away from brutality but Katusha manages to remain a sweet character despite the horrors of the war she is a direct participant in. Again, as with the first book, this second volume is highly recommended.

Short Reading.

I bought this like many other people, expecting to learn something about autofellatio. Unfortunately, I consider most of this book fluff. Fluff, as in the author's own homosexuality, and testimonials from other people who can autofellate. Great in proving it can be done, but otherwise inconsequential. How do you autofellate? Maybe I'm just an advanced masturbator, but it was nothing I didn't know already. And exercise? Nothing I couldn't have figured out on my own.

Nonetheless, I'll keep the book around simply because it's easier following an exercise regimine somebody else has created rather than an arbitrary one of your own. Ha ha.

The only book I know of on the subject

I bought this book somewhere other than Amazon, but I am pleased to see that they carried it at one time. This book is out of print and is not likely to be available again as the author has passed away.
The subject matter is definitely unique. The author tells of his personal experiences and what it means to him, and then tells you some exercises to do the deed and also a compilation of videos depicting it, although it is a bit dated. Other interesting items are excerpts from case studies by doctors and psychologists, which I found informative and entertaining.
I liked it for the fact that it covers a topic nobody else has written about, but the author spends too much time discussing his homosexual exploits rather than the book's topic. This is a cheaply-done book and the photos are black and white and looked like they were photocopied. Don't buy it for the pictures.
Pehaps someone else should write a book on the subject...and Amazon could sell it.

What an experience.

Well what can I say, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the item and really get to grip with the basics of self fulfillment. Though initially quite hard, once I managed to grasp the principle I quickly mastered the correct technique. With a little work I soon got really big results. I recommend this book to anyone who feels he needs a change from the norm and though initially messy work it will change your life forever.

Amazing Drawing Guide for Manga Fashion!

Okay...I normally don't write extensive reviews, but I just have to for a Christopher Hart drawing book! I received it in the mail yesterday and from first glance, you can tell that the book covers a lot of different fashions, mainly for females.

First off, why fashion is important. As an artist/writer, fashion is just as important at setting a character's personality as their emotions and traits are. Usually, when a character is introduced, you make a first impression based off what you see. And what you see is their style. Certain pieces of clothing are associated with certain groups of people. Nobody outside the rebel/punk/goth group would wear a spike choker. And the rebel group would never wear a brand name polo and Sperrys. Fashion helps define a character and that is why a drawing book focused on outfits is necessary.

Secondly, from personal experience, drawing clothes can be a major pain. I'm not one of those artists that can visualize something in my head and spit it on paper that easily. Especially when it comes to clothing. I'm not a fashionista by any means and sometimes it is hard to draw a character in something that I myself would not wear. That's where a book like this comes in handy! I can garner some ideas and mix them up in my head to create something unique. One issue I have drawing clothes is where I put folds, creases, and general movement in the cloth. But one of the hardest fashion accessories for me to draw are shoes. I love how this book focuses on clothing accessories such as shoes, purses, and umbrellas. Most only focus on the shirt, skirt, pants, shorts, etc.

Pros: Bright, colorful, and informative. I love how this book incorporates drawings from different artists so that not one style is too dominant. Beginning artists tend to copy other artist's styles instead of creating their own and I think changing up the style of the art is a smart idea. It also gives these artists more coverage. (see above sections for more pros like incorporating fashion accessories)

Cons: This may just be me personally, but I wish there were more pages dedicated to male fashion. Out of the hundred something pages, only five pages focus on male fashion. I wish it focused on that aspect of fashion a bit more. I tend to draw males more than I do females, but that's just a personal preference. Men's clothing is just as diverse and I want more of that! Also, it would be nice to see more diverse skin color :)

Really good book

At first I didn't think this was going to be as good as Irene Flores', but I was wrong.
I was blown away buy the really cute designs.
There are actual steps in drawing the outfits.
Many different styles to choose from.
The only thing that could make this better would be more male and some gender neutral outfits.
I highly recommend this book.

and I was pretty impressed by everything in it

So I recently got the book, and I was pretty impressed by everything in it. The artwork is stunning and is complimented by funny and witty comments or useful tips. They break everything down into easy to follow steps, and sometimes will show more then one view of the character. Which is extremely helpful. There's also tons of poses. Instead of drawing the characters in bland poses and focusing on the clothes, the artist draws the characters in dynamic poses so you (the reader) can see how the clothes interact with the body. There is a wide variety of clothes they showcase, and some Japanese attire that would fit in with any manga. I don't draw Manga or anime, but this book has helped me understand clothes better. If your a artist of any level check it out. There's something for everyone in the book!

A Landmark Book in the History of Musical Sounds

While experimenting with musical instruments and sounds, the author observed a new relationship between the timbre of sounds and the tunings in which sounds are played. In an effort to understand this relationship the author hypothesized a mechanism for relating spectrum to scale. He then went to the heart of the matter, figured it all out, and proved the hypothesis. All of this and much more are clearly presented in Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale (TTSS).
TTSS is written so as to be comprehensible to a wide readership. It was a pleasure reading this informative and stunning book. In places it is even entertaining as the author's sense of humor shows through. The book should eventually find its way into many libraries (public, private, and institutional) because it contains new and important original contributions to many areas of music.
There are 345 pages divided into 13 sections and 6 short appendices. There is an extensive bibliography, a discography, an index, and an accompanying Compact Disk containing 33 sound examples. All sound examples are explained in the book, and they provide convincing support for the author's premises.

A succinctly written Prelude tells what Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale is all about. I found myself looking forward to learning more about the ideas outlined here. You'll find yourself anxious to learn where a particular concept will lead. The author has a knack for gradually building up an idea to its climax while keeping the reader involved, and this is rare amongst books where new ideas are being presented.

The book begins, in Section 1, with a challenge to current thinking concerning the consonance of musical octaves. A new idea is presented and its validity demonstrated using audio examples on the accompanying CD. ... Superb demonstration!... Section 1 also introduces a unique and practical method of quantifying the tonal consonance of any musical sound. The next four sections are entitled respectively: The Science of Sound, Musical Scales, Consonance and Dissonance of Harmonic Sounds, and Related Spectra and Scales. These sections taught me much about musical sounds and concepts. They are well written and include many informative figures, and they provide descriptions of more unique audio examples on the CD.

The Science of Sound section addresses the issue: what is sound? This leads into clear discussions of relevant terms. The reader is taken on a fascinating journey into timbre, pitch, scales, tunings, spectral analysis, beats and consonance. After reading about Musical Scales, you'll feel like an expert, and gain an appreciation of scales since the time of Pythagoras. You'll understand the profound influence they have had over the centuries in defining musics of an era.

The next section on Consonance and Dissonance provides a historical perspective of the way in which these terms have been used, and then focuses on Sensory Consonance. This has the unique property, amongst consonance/dissonance concepts, of being quantifiable in a scientific sense. It is here that one discovers a fundamental connection between the consonance works of Helmholtz 1877, Plomp & Levett 1965 and Partch 1974, which leads to a reasonably complete understanding of sensory consonance. The plot thickens as the connection between sensory consonance and musical scales unfolds. This connection is then transformed into practice as the author creates new and unique songs, A Bell, A Rock and A Crystal. It is amazing to observe musical passages created in this way.

The following section, Adaptive Tunings, describes the author's algorithms for tuning in real time, or , as is sometimes described, how to "tune on the fly". Once again, the accompanying CD provides adaptively tuned musical passages verifying algorithmic predictions. It seems that music is about to expand its domain of musical sounds in a significant way. Read the book to find out why and how this is happening.

The book contains much, much more. There is a section on Gamelans, a theory for 10 TET, dissonance curve computer programs, sensory consonance score of a Scarlatti sonata, analysis and synthesis of harmonic and non-harmonic sounds. Fourier Transform analysis and limitations, dissonance surfaces for chords, and a well thought out final section: Speculation, Interpretation, Conclusion.

I believe the author also recognized a basic limitation of Western music, and again went to the heart of the problem, figured it all out, and then proved his point. The result of these efforts is this exceptional book.

An interesting combination of mathematics and psychoacoustics

The author, while experimenting with a synthesizer, discovered that some kinds of scales sound good with some timbres and not with others, and likewise some kinds of timbres sound good in some scales and not in others. He set out to find out why, and the result was this book. The book examines these types of questions by looking at psychoacoustics and produces a model of musical perception that can predict what you will hear when you put certain timbres in specific musical contexts. The first few chapters examine the issues of tuning, timbre, spectrum, and scale in nonmathematical terms. Only in later chapters does the author introduce the math behind the modeling. A CD accompanies the book that allows you to listen to the sounds and the various tunings recommended in the book and verify that the model works correctly. This book is a good companion to Perry Cook's more basic book on psychoacoustics entitled "Music, Cognition, and Computerized Sound", which is a much less mathematical work. I enjoyed this book because I'm interested in multimedia computing and I'm always looking for texts that explore the relationship between images, sound, and mathematics. You'll need to be familiar with music theory before you tackle this book, since the author makes some assumptions there about his audience. However, he is fairly gentle with the mathematical portion.

Current music theory starts with the Pythagorean assumption that two notes are consonant if their fundamental frequencies are a ratio of small numbers, like 1/2, 1/3, 2/3, 3/4, etc. Sethares shows where the assumption arises and shows how to measure the degree of consonance of two notes in a principled way. His approach also applies to instruments whose partials do not form a harmonic series, such as xylophones, pitched drums, and computer-generated tones. In my opinion, and with no exaggeration, he has made the biggest step in music theory since Pythagoras.

As a Biochemistry graduate student, I am constantly on the lookout for books which could help me in my research. When this particular book came out, I didn't have second thoughts in purchasing it and my decision was amply rewarded. I am greatly impressed by the way Dr. Hafiz Ahmed presented his work. The principles/theories are outlined followed by the step-by-step experimental procedures which are easy to follow. As I read the contents of each page, I couldn't help but feel that the author conceptualized the book in such a way that the end-user won't have any difficulty in conducting his research since each topic has a detailed description. Just after World War II, a young orphan living in Naples comes under the protection of Don Gaetano, the superintendent of an apartment building. (4.5 stars) Described by Milan's daily newspaper Corriere della Serra as "the only true first-rate writer that the new millennium has given us for now," Erri De Luca writes a story of Naples, filling it with well-developed characters who live through three different time periods - 1943, as Naples has its popular uprising against their German occupiers; the early 1950s, when the unnamed narrator, a young orphan of about seven, is growing up; and the early 1960s, when the young man is now finishing school and about to set out on his own. The novel moves back and forth in time, as the author writes an often lyrical novel full of noble sentiments and wise observations, at the same time that it is packed with details about life and behavior.

The young orphan grows up in the early 1950s without any real supervision, living in a back room belonging to Don Gaetano, the doorman of an apartment building. As a child soccer player famous for his monkey-like ability to retrieve the ball when it goes awry, he discovers a secret passageway into a grotto behind a statue. Lovely descriptive passages make the depths of the city, its sponge-like tufo substratum, and its coolness come alive, and when the boy discovers some books there, he also discovers a whole new world of reading. Another time, he also sees a beautiful young girl through the upstairs window, and she haunts his life, even after she disappears.

The author uses numerous flashbacks to describe wartime life in September, 1943, and as Don Gaetano emphasizes the lessons he has learned through this and other experiences, he creates a kind of daily catechism of his own, declaring: "The worst things happen under sunny skies. When the weather is bad, a person prefers to postpone an evil deed." and "A writer has to be smaller than the subject he is describing. You have to sense the story running away from him every which way, and him capturing only a part of it." The author reveals information slowly, always showing Don Gaetano's concern for the boy, and when the boy is seventeen or eighteen, the beautiful Anna, about whom he has dreamt for years, returns, and their meeting becomes the final dramatic step in his coming-of-age.

De Luca provides much information in few words, selecting perfect details, rather than numerous details, which elevate the novel. The observation that the day before happiness (when bad things often happen) is even more important than the happiness which follows; that Christianity is like a belt around the world; that heirs get rid of the books accumulated by the dead in order to exorcise their ghosts; and that Naples is "Spanish" (and anarchistic) in tone and is located in Italy "by mistake," all suggest much more than they actually say, a wonderful change from the overly specific and self-conscious style of much modern writing. Intense in its imagery and emotion, this novel reflects the universal longings of the main character as he grows on his own. Exciting on the level of theme and style, it is hard to imagine any reader not responding to the young orphan with empathy and warmth as he learns to understand people and to "read their thoughts." A Wonderful Reading Experience

"The Day Before Happiness" is a delightful read about a throwaway boy just after WW II and how he grows up with the insightful help of a local 'fix-it' man. The translation does not obscure the regional nature of Naples with all of its charm and tradgedy shortly after the liberation by the Americans. It is streaked throughout with hopefulness and an expectation of happiness just on the horizon. I donated this book to the local Library to help them expand in this time of severe budget constraints.I bought this book from Amazon and am pleased I did !

My rating of The Day Before Happiness

I read the book as a member of a book club. I enjoyed the writing style of the translation. The translator carefully chose his words to tell the story in the fewest words possible. Very compact, yet descriptive. As I was reading the book I wondered if the original language was as rich and beautiful as the translation. I also enjoyed the first person narrative from a young boy's perspective. The main characters were rich, beautifully described; I was able to identify with the boy and his mentor. I appreciate that the author uses the same translator-it is alomost as if they are co-writing the novel. I will definately read another book by this author.
