About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. He has taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and principles of economics. Professor Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals such as the AMERICAN ECONOMIC REVIEW, JOURNAL OF POLITICAL ECONOMY, and QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS and in more widely accessible forums including THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and FORTUNE. In addition to his teaching, research, and writing, Professor Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. it's "all that and a bag of chips"

This is a demanding high school (or undemanding college) introductory textbook on the subject. Only the most rudimentary algebra is required, and honestly one could easily get through the book without even that.

The edition is handsomely printed, with a font that's easy on the eye and plenty of colorful and helpfully-glossed graphs. The chapters themselves are not too long, which helps with a student's morale, believe me.

Recently I was put into a situation where I had to go, in the space of about 4 months, from knowing jack-squat about economics to being able to teach college-level macroeconomics!

Well, I frantically collected a ton of textbooks and articles about macroeconomics, ranging from the elementary to the abstruse and got to work.

And I gotta say: when something befuddled me and I found myself threshing about from text to text for the best explanation, it was nearly always Mankiw who came through with the critical phrasing that made the idea click and got me saying: "Ohhhhhh! I get it!" most often.

Not that this was always the case. There were times when I found better explanations elsewhere (e.g., Chapter 19, on the foreign currency market, is exasperatingly elliptical and could use a major dummying-down), but more often than not, Mr. Mankiw had the goods: the clearest and most easy-to-follow way of wording or graphing a slippery or counter-intuitive concept.

Of course, it's easy to hate Mr. Mankiw: he's young, he's handsome, he's brilliant (one of the youngest full professors ever at Harvard), and he's rich (his textbooks are now standard in AP courses nationwide). Jerk!

Because of these reasons, I would love to trash his book, showing how it "ain't all that."

Well, it is. Gulp.

Only one note: If you're planning on getting this book to study macroeconomics independently, you will find one irritating drawback: there are exercises at the end of each chapter, but no answers in the back. Essentially, therefore, it's a book for schoolchildren, not mature learners.

But its explanations -- believe me -- can't be beat.

Very comprehensive and well written!

I use this book in my economics class and all I can say is that is excellent. The author describes the basic concepts without being too complicated and messy. He keeps the things simple and incorporates some real-life economic problems and discussions into each chapter. The book overall provides a clear insight into microeconomics and shows what it is all about.

Amazingly Insightful

This book was a requirement for my intro level microeconomics course. I would like to being by saying that this book is an incredibly easy read. It isn't extremely boring and dry and it isn't extremely fun with little important information. It contains all of the relevant information. The way the book delivers the information is astounding. You read through a block of text and then the book displays graphical examples with captions below to help interpret the graph. The online homework that I had to do along with the book made retaining the important information extremely easy. Economics comes relatively easy to me, but the addition of this great textbook made getting an A almost too easy. I didn't even show up to lecture about one third of the time because Dr. Mankiw does such a well job of explaining the material.

This is an excellent overview of feminist issues--but it's not just filled with summaries of current thinking however, it also contains a lot of original work as well. The author takes a practical approach to various issues such as equal pay, whether women think differently from men, etc. It's not only a good book for learning about feminism, but also very good for learning more about critical thinking. Highly recommended.

A little deceptive...

Be aware that the cover of this book is made to look like a Penguin Classic. It is not a Penguin Classic. It lacks any publisher information.
Also, note the dimensions in the description and you will find that it is more the size of a workbook.
I will return mine and buy the normal sized, Penguin Classic.

Regarding the 1943 Edition with Illustrations

Jane Eyre is one of the great books and anyone who hasn't read it should. This review is about the 1943 edition originally packaged with a copy of Wuthering Heights in the same style. I was only interested in Jane Erye and was happy to be able to buy the single volume.
The book is a comfortable size for reading. Approximately 8"x10"x1". "The text was composed in Monotype Bodoni with long descenders" we are told. It is also in double columns which may bother some people. For me it adds a grace note to a peaceful reread of a favorite. The woodcut illustrations are quite perfect, terrifying and charming by turn. It would seem that Mr Eichenberg not only read the book but paid attention.
This is an excellent copy for the true fan to keep on the shelf or sidetable at home. For carrying around I would recommend an inexpensive paperback.

An exquisite book bound in genuine leather

I have been collecting The Easton Press Collector's Editions for several years now and consider them to be one of the more exquisite and beautiful book collections in the market. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to gaze upon the beautiful bound books, each having that distinctive leather-bound smell, and of course, the gorgeous illustrations that accompany these editions. Aside from scouring used bookstores, I have also been lucky enough to find some of the Easton Press titles on Amazon and this Easton Press Collector's Edition of Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" did not disappoint. The book, purchased via a third party seller here, arrived in almost mint condition (even the bookplate sticker, which I found among the pages, had not been peeled off and placed on the inside cover by the previous owner). The gilt-edging on the cover and back is in a beautiful gold, and the book itself is bound in genuine leather and is a grayish black. Most of the Easton Press Collector's Editions come in distinctive colors, all of which are bound in genuine leather, so they not only make for handsome additions to one's personal library, but are also heirloom quality, and of course, make great gifts for bibliophiles.

This book is part of the Easton Press series titled "The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written". The book contains color lithographs by Barnett Freedman and was published in 1980. There is a frontispiece portrait of Emily Brontë specially commissioned for this edition. The artist is Barbara Sparks. This edition also includes:
The Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell by Currer Bell (Charlotte Brontë)
An Editor's Preface to the New Edition of Wuthering Heights (1850)
A diagram depicting key players in the story
The text of "Wuthering Heights" which is based on the Oxford edition (with the original printer's errors corrected)

All in all, this is a handsome leather-bound edition of one of the greatest works of English literature.

Sex can't be all....

Read at your own risk. I wanted to give this book 5 stars but come towards the end something wasn't clear. A past mistake by two people leads to a child. But come towards the end I'm trying to understand why this child isn't seven and instead this child is a baby/toddler in a stroller. Maybe I missed something there. Was that past mistake not eight years ago? So over eight years ago with 9 months of that being pregnant. That's where I was completely confused at. Why is this child in a stroller? Maybe I'm have to go back and re-read. But I swear that was clearly mentioned. Brief sexual encountered with a woman before he met the woman of his dreams. But other than that story kept my attention. Regina a woman that wants her cake and eat it too. With wanting Mark to pop the big question she wants more besides money. Sex, that's where Tony comes in at. But Tony starts to fall hard for Regina. Lots of secrets revealed with many different characters. Even Mark isn't all that stand upish either.

Pillow Talk.

This was a story that had a lot of drama with all the characters involved but there was a love ending for the couple in the end. Though there were several typos which would throw the story off at times it was an awesome love story. Plenty of sexual encounters between the characters. I really enjoyed the way Charles handles Vanessa. Be interesting to have a follow up with maybe Regina getting pregnant, Amanda finally settling down with someone and Tony getting his just due. Oh well, another time. Loved it.

Great starting point for the funk!

I have never played funk music before - thanks to this book, now I have a clue and I'm having fun playing along with the tracks on the CD of this outstanding method. The exercises are truly useful and build gradually your funk chops from the scratch (no pun intended).

The book is much easier if you already know about dominant chords, but it does not require advanced playing.

Verry fun and instructive! A great book!

Let The Funk Begin

If you've never played Funk guitar, you will when you're done with this book! I have to disagree when anyone that says this book is not for beginners. The chords and rhythm grooves on the CD are exactly what beginners need to stay interested in chords, chord progressions and structure. It will also please the ears of parents and other nearby listeners. There is more to the fretboard than shredding you know. Once you start getting the basics of this book underway, I strongly suggest listening to some James Brown, Tower of Power, Funkadelic (the sixties stuff), Rick James, Prince (the beginnings) and The Meters (Cissy Strut).
There is some very good stuff in this book!

Very good stuff

this is a nice book, it starts with some basic (but useful) 16ths exercises then moves on to some very cool grooves, the CD tracks although basic do sound professional, something I appreciated ... you'd think the grooves here are easy but they are not, they are simple but not easy at all if you want to play them like Mr. Bolton does on the CD (he plays pretty much on top of the beat & he has great timing) ... most funk tricks you hear are explained here, scratching, skanks, slides, muting, funky shuffle feels ... I would have liked more exercises to develop the other rhythmic figures in this book but overall it's very good
