JOHN DREW is a specialist in McKinsey & Company's Practice in the UK. He has applied lean across a number of sectors including automotive, aerospace, steel, consumer goods and retail. He has a special interest in developing an approach to securing the behavioural change which must underpin a lean transformation and ensure its sustainability. Prior to joining McKinsey & Company, he worked at CarnaudMetalbox and Land Rover

BLAIR McCALLUM is the Director of McKinsey & Company's Production Systems Design Centre and has been working with companies in a range of sectors applying lean principles, including oil and gas, automotive, aerospace, furniture, defence and construction. He has previously worked for Toyota, who have been a leading pioneer of lean production methods and Rover Group, where he was responsible for introducing lean production into the manufacture of new products, including the Rover 75.

STEFAN ROGGENHOFER is a leader of McKinsey & Company's Manufacturing Practice in Europe. He has led projects in operational performance improvements for companies in a range of sectors including, luxury goods, aerospace, consumer electronics and steel.

Excellent for beginners

As a Japanese management consultant working in the U.S, I was curious how good this book is...and found out that this book contains all the essential elements of lean production and its philosophy. Very good introduction to understand all the basics. It seems many of the concepts and tools were customized so that U.S. people can better understand the concepts...but to be honest, they are a bit different from the original philosophy that Ohno Taichi, the founder of Toyota Production System, had written in his books. I would strongly encourage to read the original books written by Ohno...it is always better to read the original books if you really want to understand the REAL concepts. But again, this book "Journey to Lean" is a very good introcution for begginers.

Good introduction to lean.

This book take you through the basic consepts of lean. And it does so in an easy and interesting way. The examples in the book are well constructed and told. This is a book written by persons who have practise lean themeselves. It is a great book for an manager who want to learn about lean or a student that would like to get some " real life" understanding of lean compared to other books out there which are to theoretical.

Lean command and control?

A major consulting company demonstrating that lean has become main stream. l enjoyed reading the book, its lucid and very well written.

However, the customer is strangely absent for some reason and it does take a pedestrian, slightly pedantic and bureaucratic approach to organisational change for my taste, But its a journey after all.

I detect a high degree of bias from the application of Lean manufacturing techniques into the world of services which is heavy handed and inappropriate. Having seen the approach outlined in this book implemented I am slightly uneasy about its assumptions about people motivation and control.

All that said, if you are in manufacturing, it was a good read and a good introduction to the lean journey concept, Just ease off the micro-control fixation and it will work much better.

He says he was threatened and bribed in an effort to kill the project, but after 9/11 he finally decided to go through with this expose of his former professional life. Perkins, a former chief economist at Boston strategic-consulting firm Chas. T. Main, says he was an "economic hit man" for 10 years, helping U.S. intelligence agencies and multinationals cajole and blackmail foreign leaders into serving U.S. foreign policy and awarding lucrative contracts to American business. "Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars," Perkins writes. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man is an extraordinary and gripping tale of intrigue and dark machinations. Think John Le Carré, except it's a true story.

Perkins writes that his economic projections cooked the books Enron-style to convince foreign governments to accept billions of dollars of loans from the World Bank and other institutions to build dams, airports, electric grids, and other infrastructure he knew they couldn't afford. The loans were given on condition that construction and engineering contracts went to U.S. companies. Often, the money would simply be transferred from one bank account in Washington, D.C., to another one in New York or San Francisco. The deals were smoothed over with bribes for foreign officials, but it was the taxpayers in the foreign countries who had to pay back the loans. When their governments couldn't do so, as was often the case, the U.S. or its henchmen at the World Bank or International Monetary Fund would step in and essentially place the country in trusteeship, dictating everything from its spending budget to security agreements and even its United Nations votes. It was, Perkins writes, a clever way for the U.S. to expand its "empire" at the expense of Third World citizens. While at times he seems a little overly focused on conspiracies, perhaps that's not surprising considering the life he's led. --Alex Roslin

Perkins spent the 1970s working as an economic planner for an international consulting firm, a job that took him to exotic locales like Indonesia and Panama, helping wealthy corporations exploit developing nations as, he claims, a not entirely unwitting front for the National Security Agency. He says he was trained early in his career by a glamorous older woman as one of many "economic hit men" advancing the cause of corporate hegemony. He also says he has wanted to tell his story for the last two decades, but his shadowy masters have either bought him off or threatened him until now. The story as presented is implausible to say the least, offering so few details that Perkins often seems paranoid, and the simplistic political analysis doesn’t enhance his credibility. Despite the claim that his work left him wracked with guilt, the artless prose is emotionally flat and generally comes across as a personal crisis of conscience blown up to monstrous proportions, casting Perkins as a victim not only of his own neuroses over class and money but of dark forces beyond his control. His claim to have assisted the House of Saud in strengthening its ties to American power brokers may be timely enough to attract some attention, but the yarn he spins is ultimately unconvincing, except perhaps to conspiracy buffs.

Read to understand the nature & subtelty of the American global empire

After reading this book, this work gave me a totally new perspective on the halcyon period of my life growing up in Jakarta, Indonesia in the early 1980's. My father was a Vice President in finance credit & lease lending for the once bank Manufacturers Hanover (later merged to Chemical bank and finally to Citibank to grow its monopoly on banking), where he lent money mostly to the oil companies to finance their exploitation of the island's oil resources. Once where I viewed the exclusive private school I went to JIS (its where President Obama also went to when he grew up in Jakarta), the exclusive expatriate suburb Pondak Indah and the expensive American club, I now see as places to exclude and get away from the native population and their culture albeit the American embassy did at times have the occasional presentation on Indonesian culture. Since I was very young, I had a very dissembled view on the Indonesian native population. I also lived like the author for six months in the Hilton Hotel (though he stayed at the Intercontinental) paid by Manny Hanny and had the most fun eating all the food you can eat, play all the tennis & bowling you can. I know now I see a different take on the servants we had and the driver we had to drive our family all around Jakarta. What was their life like and what was their families like that had to do to sustain our lifestyle?

Its the central theme in John Perkins book. The exploitation of the many as indentured workers to serve the very few special rich. Its an intertwined web of corporations, governments and NGOs (Perkins calls this web the Corportocracy) to produce non-sustainable debt in third world countries that they can never pay off to eventually give our Country's corporations eventual exploitation of their resources as an ersatz for payment of their debt.

Perkins cites many other third world countries besides Indonesia like Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Venezuela,..etc that America has used this method of entrapping and having influence over using the EHM method of debt piling a country's balance sheet. Its very intriguing to read about if the politician does not go along with this and is assassinated by jackals hired by the CIA to overthrow that leader and to install a puppet leader to be used by the United States. This is not a spy novel but this is all common knowledge and Perkins is great in assembling and bring together all the knowledge that is out there on American global manipulation and putting it together in this book.

Perkins makes a good point that all this debt riddling of countries will eventually come to an end when the US dollar no longer is the world's reserve currency. As this debt would eventually need to be called and repaid. I do think Perkins should have mentioned that not only does the USA debt burden foreign countries but the US debt burdens its own citizens domestically also. American savings loans, US bank bail outs, QE1-3,..etc have also enlarged out domestic debt. So not only doesn't the American government do not really care about foreigners living off in far off lands, it essentially doesn't care about its own citizens. Add that in with State and municipal governments with huge pensions and debts it cannot repay, America is on the verge of bankruptcy. So this corpotocracy system seeks to exploits its own citizens may show that end is very near. Only at the end does the government animal cannibalize its own population.

Perkins does not explain why the EHM model changed from his time in the early 1970's with a NSA liaison training him specifically to exploit countries by fudging economic statistics to the time in the early 1980's when NSA government help was no longer needed. The new fresh graduates were somehow automatically brainwashed in the money Perkins was making to just accept the fact that to make a lot of money this is how to play the game. I really don't find that plausible and Perkins doesn't really clearly explain this in a cogent fashion for me to accept his explanation.

In summary a sublime work on the nature of empire building by the USA corportocracy in the 20th & 21st centuries. Of course the USA will fall inevitably probably in the next 10-20 years and we will be watching the rise of China take over the hill as the big dog and Mr. Perkins thesis that the US dollar will lose its status as the world's reserve currency will come to fruition and the USA global empire will crumble. Read this book now before the USA corporate empire becomes a memory in books about empires like the British, Ottoman & the Roman.

A Must Read! It Will Change Your Thoughts

The only reason I bought this book was for a Argumentative Writing class. This book did not teach me how to write a argumentative paper. It did however, open my eyes to a world I knew nothing about. I normally only read paranormal romance but this book I actually wanted to read and finish!

Even if what Perkin's says is the truth or a lie, it does open to some great debates. I never heard of the Panama Invasion in high school. After reading and doing a paper on it for my class I learned there are a lot of cover ups for what was really the plan. Thousands and thousands of innocent people died during the invasion. It was said they were going after one guy but a few days before Christmas thousands of people, men, women, and children were murdered. Some even had their hands tied behind there backs. Why, because they said they were going after a man who was dangerous. When in reality the U.S. was losing there grip on Panama and needed it back.

I always wondered why people around the world hated the U.S so much. This book is worth the read. If you want to educate yourself, I suggest you pick this book up and start reading.

A good, important message by Perkins, but hypocritical.

Perkins lays out what his job was for the American government:
Perkins was sent in with a proposition for newly-christened foreign leaders who were given an offer (that was unwise to refuse) of riches and comfort IF they accepted American corporations coming to their country to basically rape it for any and all raw materials, precious metals, energy, etc. If (and sometimes when) Perkins failed to cajole the leader into accepting this sellout offer, then said leader would find himself the victim of either a military putsch OR dead in a plane crash.

Perkins's book has an important message to impart in that the American government has exercised this ugly practice in literally DOZENS of countries since WWII -- sometimes multiple times in the same country. My contention with Perkins is with Perkins himself. Basically, he waited good and long (and made his nest egg $$$$$$$$$$) before making more money by writing this book about how he participated in raping some of the already desolately-poor countries on the planet. Anyone else see something wrong here? Now that he has made his gold, he now takes the opportunity to make more money preaching about the evils of the American empire? Think I'm being a harsh critic? When Perkins "left" his government service, he still employed his golden parachute by taking a job at a juicy American corporation and I might add, still kept his complicit mouth shut for YEARS.

An important message? You bet. However, let's not forget the millions who suffered under a system propagated by the author himself even after his conscience got to him and he left government service. I'd be FAR more impressed had he taken action immediately at the time rather than waiting years upon years while feathering his own nest.

If You Like Rohr, You'll Like This.

I've read most of Rohr's other books, have listened to many of his recordings (uh heh), I get his daily meditation, etc., so maybe I was expecting too much when I pre-ordered the book as a result of him touting it in August and September of 2016. I was expecting more detail on how/who came up with the concept of Trinity in the first place and how it has been deemed central-but-ineffable by the Church. Alas, it was not to be. I found the book interesting, but I really didn't learn anything that Rohr hadn't already said numerous times elsewhere.

I felt like this was an attempt to define the indefinite, and it seemed another much-too-labored attempt at quantifying the number of angels on the head of a pin. "Trinity" could have just as well been called "Divine Dance of which we're a part," and we'd be done with it. But trying to define some triune nature of God fell flat for me. His central points have been made elsewhere, and this book could have been distilled into a much, much shorter treatise.

What I couldn't answer was, "What makes this book different? What is he offering here that he hasn't offered elsewhere in a myriad of ways?" If you like Rohr, you'll probably like this. What I couldn't quite understand were all of the breathless accolades in the front matter of the book, nor all of the 5-star ratings on Amazon. It's a good book but, again, if you've read Rohr's other work, read his daily meditations, and listened to his audio recordings, you'll find much of The Divine Dance redundant and repetitious. Triune, Trinity, Trinitarian...it's the cosmic dance of which we're all a part. But trying to operationalize and legitimize an old doctrine seems tortured at best. If humans are part of the divine dance, then why is the concept of three necessary? Or, if you want to carry the number three forward, why aren't there two parts of God with humans completing the trinity as the third part since we're an integral part of the dance?

Rohr has said numerous times that he's often run afoul of the church hierarchy and the non-questioning members of his congregations. This felt like a bit of a half-hearted attempt to return to dogma--for what reason, I can't fathom.

Rohr acolytes, please save your "Comments" for someone else. Sorry, but there's no need for your attempts at exegesis, exposition, or "you just don't get it." Just enjoy the book you've read or are about to read. I bless you on your journey.

The Divine Dance

Franciscan priest Richard Rohr considers The Divine Dance the most important book he has ever written. I concur that this is indeed a very important book.
His thesis is that whatever is going on in God is like dancing, a flowing of life. Knowledge of God is participatory; it is knowing from within, from participating in the dance. Sin is stopping the flow of the dance. Moreover, he says, “What physicists and contemplatives alike are confirming is that the foundational nature of reality is relational; everything is in relationship with everything else” (page 69). Being a psychiatrist, I would add that behavioral science and neuroscience are confirming the same.
The book contains important take home messages. Among my favorites are the following:
Messages about God: “Whatever is going on in God is a flow, a radical relatedness, a perfect communion between Three [Father, Son and Holy Spirit for a Christian]—a circle dance of Love. And God is not just a dancer; God is the dance itself” (page 27). “… God … is actually inter-being …” (page 82). God loves you, not because you are good, but because God is good (page 110). “The cross is the standing icon and image of God, showing us that … God is in the suffering with us” (page 132). “Jesus became incarnate to reveal the image of the invisible God” (page 174).
Messages about the universe and us: “Our starting place was always original goodness, not original sin” (page 32). “Personhood is not a static notion, but an entirely dynamic and relational one … our original identity in God. All human personhood implies a process of coming to be in love! Sin is every refusal to move in the direction of our deepest identity as love” (page 77). “…this ‘whole creation itself … [is being] brought into the same glorious freedom as the children of God’ and is ‘groaning in one great act of giving birth’” (page 114). “Humans change in the process of love-mirroring, and not by paying any price or debt” (page 132). “Creation just keeps unfolding …” (page 147).
The book ends with a quote from Catherine of LaCugna: “The very nature of God, therefore, is to seek out the deepest possible communion and friendship with every last creature on this earth” (page 194).
An appendix describes seven practices for experiencing the Trinity.
I highly recommend this book for people of all faiths who seek inspiration for living in our current time of increasing interconnectedness.

Nearly too late for me but richly welcomed and appreciated'

If I had this information back in the 40's I would most likely remained in Catholisism. I failed to hear the Good News until I was in my mid-seventies with a non-denominational Evangelical Church. If I heard any of this when a child I was too young to understand but I am convinced that at the time in the "earlier" Church that this theology wasn't taught (or it went over my head). Very happy that it now entered my life while still able to comprehend it. I thank God now for being led to Richard Rohr by Wm Paul Young through his website and book,"The Shack".

About the Author
The Baron Munchausen was in part the creation of Rudolphe Erich Raspé (1737-1794) who led a life worthy of a tall tale: naturalist, antiquarian, scholar and theif, his name figures with Daniel Defoe and Johnathan Swift as one of the great "travel liars."

A Terrific Collection of Tall Tales!

Anyone who ever laughed at the exploits of tall-tale heroes such as Paul Bunyan will instantly recognize the character of the Baron von Munchausen as the king of such heroes. His amazing and daring exploits are rife with hilarity and implausibility. It's part fairytale, part tall tale. The Baron is a figure of pure imagination (loosely based on a real person), a Quixotic figure. Do not confuse this book with a biography or history! Clearly the purpose of the book is to entertain and delight, which it does. The writing displays a superb creativity and imagination, combined with brilliant storytelling of the highest level. Just as you would not read Journey to the West seeking information on beauracratic procedures of ancient China, or Don Quixote de la Mancha seeking knowledge about Spanish funerary customs, you should not read this book looking to learn about the Munchausen family's history or current state. You should read it for the pure thrill of reading a good tale.

Fabulous for all ages

Most would be familiar with the image of Munchausen telling implausible tales with happy glee. The Raspe version is the "canonical" Munchausen story and it's very entertaining. I think that stories for children that mock reality are very good for both amusement and education and this book certainly has its share - for instance the Baron's famous pulling himself out of a bog by his own hair (in an alternate version by the bootstraps, which seems to have formed the origin for the word "bootstrapping" and a general metaphor). His tales also have the classic sense of unbelievable exploration tradition from works like the Arabian Nights and Marco Polo's travels, where exotic lands are described as being populated with people with one giant foot each and other niceties.

We laugh at Munchausen but not only so much for the tallness of his stories but also for his character traits such as his pomp and sense of self-importance. As is the case with MANY good children's books, they are philosophical and suit adults as well.

The only possible dent may be the portrayal of the Turks which would seem racist by some today. However, this is extremely mild compared to racism in many other classic works, and was certainly not enough to detract from my enjoyment (as was the case with certain other authors from the last few centuries).

An absolute delight

If you've seen The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, you've only experience a fraction of the mischief Baron Munchausen got up to.

Beginning with an endorsement by Sinbad, Aladdin, and Gulliver notarized by the the Lord Mayor's porter, the Baron's adventures begin gently and pick up speed. The chapters are of an excellent length for a bedtime story, and weave together whimsy and vivid images. Fending off a lion and a crocodile at the same time (choking the croc with the lion), travelling by balloon over Turkey and Egypt, escaping beheading, travelling to the moon and back, mixing it up with the Sphynx, and meeting lovely ladies at every turn.

Brilliant, visionary, fun, ridiculous, with only a gentle touch of irony. A distinct improvement over the sullen irony that dominates the arts today. The Baron and the author are passionate and irreverent, and represent a high point in English literature.

Surrealism, fantasy, science fiction, and a host of artists of every stripe can trace their inspirations back to this magnificent work of imagination.
