An engrossing story of a brutal age....

The saga of Hernando Ruiz - contemptously referred to as the Nazarene for been the offspring of an Arab girl and the Catholic priest who raped her - has all the trappings of an epic - history, adventure, horrendous cruelty, deceit, hate, fortunes made and lost, love, betrayal and revenge. Spain's late 16th - early 17th centuries history is not widely-known therefore the detail may well be inclined to bog down some readers hence I too was tempted to down-grade the review to a 4 star read. However on the positive side the exciting woven tale of Hernando's trials, triumphs and loves completely consumed me for several days so my five star rating serves to acknowledge that. As mentioned by another reviewer Falcones is a consumnate author cut from the same cloth as Follett's "Pillar of the Earth" and I will certainly be following his future books with keen interest.

A Must Read Book

The story is full of sacrifice, pain and suffer during those sad times of Spanish history. It is a book where you will need to read beyond the words, it is not just a story about historical events, it is an emotional journey, a love story and a beautiful painful one. It is a book that you will evoke raw emotions in you, which you should be prepared for. I definitely would recommend this book.

This book and his other one titled Cathederal of the Sea are in the same league as The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, very easy to read with good story lines throughout. His histoical account of the Spain is very revealing to someone who before this would have been in the dark about the religous turmoil that the country suffered.

ITS AN INTERESTING CONCEPT, BUT...

the book is well written, and the concept is an interesting one, but to tell you the truth i stared at all the pictures in the book trying to see what the author was seeing and i just wasnt seeing it. (and i have a good imagination)

Wish we could make out the pictures

Lots of information here, but almost none of the pictures are clear enough to see what he claims to see. Hoagland and Bara present more convincing arguments in other books. This one also seems to be a reply/self-justification/attack in response to some of Bara's more active critics. Again, if they had spent the money to make the pictures clear, this would be a much better read. As it is, I have a hard time justifying the expense of buying the book.

An interesting read that continues the Moon Conspiracy.

Much repetition and overlap with his first book -- Dark Mission. Again the photos leave too much to a potentially over active imagination. Again I found myself reading his descriptions, then looking at the photo(s) that were out of focus or super enlarge, and wondering what was he possibly looking at? Best I could assume was that he must be looking at a much higher quality photo than was captured in the graphics of this Kindle format book!
The tale told was very convincing, but the photo evidence, in 90 percent of the cases was inadequate to provide the required visual proof. Being a professional 7000 hour logged military pilot, I have seen a lot of terrestrial artifacts from altitudes of up to 40,000 feet. I found way too much of the lunar surface evidence to resemble not much more than seen from flying over uninhibited portions of planet earth, except for the extensive craters not seen on this planet.
I marvel with today's technology that can take satellite images from miles overhead of a throng of several thousand people and then digitally zoom in to the point of being able to discern and identify individual faces in sharp clear focus, yet we can't zoom in and sharply clearly identify a structure the size of the Taj Mahal or a zigarhutt/pyramid, over some irregular rock formations.

Misleading title

When I purchased this book, I was under the impression that it would contain actual strategies for speculating the VIX. Nope!
It's simply a guide of what VIX derivatives are and how they can be used. If you want to learn actual strategies for predicting the VIX levels you're out of luck. Keep that in mind before you buy this.

VIX know how from the guy who probably knows the most about it

If you want to know exactly how the VIX works, how it relates to markets, and the various ways to trade and hedge with it, look no further. There is another review here that calls the accuracy of the title of the book into question. I have the book here in front of me, and I fail to see where it says anywhere on the cover that this book will show you exactly how to predict future VIX movements. That being said, the very first chapter is on implied volatility, one of the biggest factors of option pricing. The very next chapter breaks down how the VIX works as a projection of the 30-day implied volatility of S&P500 options. With all this information and with working knowledge of option pricing, you should at least be able to glean what you need to know to attempt to predict VIX movements, and that's just the first few chapters. Nearly every following chapter lays out strategies based on what your predictions may be (as stated in the title). It's a book of content, not of VIX "tips," and on that basis it deserves five stars.

The Dictator's Last Night

This novel takes as its subject matter the controversial figure of Muammar Gaddafi, seen through the last night of his life. Gaddafi has retreated to Sirte after the fall of Tripoli in the Libyan Civil War; where the former dictator is holed up in a disused school, waiting for the arrival of his son, Mutassim, and hoping to break out and find refuge in another part of the country. While he waits, Gaddafi reflects on the Arab Spring, his life and those around him.

It is difficult to create a moving and sympathetic portrait of a man who divided opinion so strongly – both in his lifetime and since his death. Portrayed in the West as a vaguely comic figure, he was obviously feared by many in his own country, and, indeed, his own entourage, and the author manages to create a realistic portrayal of a man who is cornered and yet defiant. Reflecting on his Bedouin childhood, insults and slights – remembered and pored over – revenge, power and success; Gaddafi turns from feelings of despondency over his perceived situation, anger at the astounding ingratitude of his people and ministers and an inability to accept any dissent or criticism, even while asking those around him what went wrong…

Through Gaddafi’s fictional memories, the author manages to give us the essential history of a man who rose from poverty to change his destiny; heading a coup d’etat in 1969 to depose King Idris and having extraordinary power. By containing the book within this short, but incredibly stressful, time period, the novel feels extremely tense and gripping. Although we know the outcome, I did find the whole book simply riveting and was unable to put it down at the end. This would be an incredible choice for reading groups, with so much to discuss. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review. Highly recommended.

Disappointing

I had such hopes for this novel. I read the news but there’s so much I don’t know about Libya and its former leader, Muammar Gaddafi. I thought this first-person account of the last few hours of his life would give me insights into the politics, economics and culture of the country which he ruled, and the factors that led to his downfall. And Gaddafi, with his vanity and guile and bizarre behavior, would make the ultimate unreliable narrator.

The novel begins with Gaddafi in hiding in a disused building, with just a few loyalists around him, contemplating what he sees as the failure of his allies and the treachery of his people. We are taken through a series of conversations, interspersed with his memories and thoughts on key events in his life, ending with his attempt to flee and his violent death at the hands of a militia.

The structure should make for great drama, so what went wrong? I think the key difficulty is the voice. Of course, any narrative, particularly a first person one, is a device, but it’s not clear who is speaking here. Are we reading Gaddafi’s innermost thoughts? Or is he, even now, trying to live up to his public persona? It’s not quite either. The prose at best is functional and there doesn’t seem to be a fully developed character animating the words.

What we get instead are some clunky exchanges of dialogue, and reminiscences which don’t really take you beyond the headlines.
I didn’t feel I’d got a deeper sense of who Gaddafi was. How did he rise up from nothing? What was his appeal? What drove him?

There is some odd phrasing too. I’m not sure whether this is due to the original or the translation. But who, under any circumstances, never mind when lying in a drain facing imminent death, would muse, “A guide, though entrusted with a messianic mission, when he has official responsibility for a country, does not turn the other cheek”?

The book feels like one of those dramatised reconstructions you get in TV documentaries, where underemployed actors struggle valiantly to give life to chunks of exposition. Disappointing.

It had been a while since the last time I read a Yasmina Khadra's book but he is still one of my favorite author. In his special super simple way he has the ability to tell a very difficult story where we can almost empathize with one of the most dangerous and tyrannical man of the last 30 years. His own vision of Libia and of his role in guiding it outside the power of the western country and the reasons behind his defeat mostly; a pity that there isn't very much about the way he became the "brotherly guide", with a little help from some "Italian Friends", but ok, this book is all about the last night of the Rais before his defeat.

Era passato un po' di tempo dall'ultima volta che avevo letto un libro di Yasmina Khadra, ma lui resta comunque uno dei miei autori preferiti. Nel suo modo super semplice e lineare di rccontare le cose, abbiamo qui il racconto il prima persona da parte di Gheddafi, con il quale riusciamo anche ad empatizzare a tratti, nonostante sia stato uno degli uomini piú pericolosi e tirannici degli ultimi 30 anni. La sua personale visione della LIbia al di fuori della sfera di influenza dei paesi occidentali, il suo ruolo di guida del popolo e le ragioni della rivolta che hanno portato alla sua sconfitta. Peccato ci sia poco riguardo alla sua salita al potere, quella per la quale possiamo ringraziare anche qualche "amico italiano", ma ok, tutto sommato questo libro avviene tutto nell'ultima notte prima della sconfitta del Rais.

Good Book - What I expected

I purchased this book as a reference in designing pneumatic conveying systems in a lime plant.

I found the book easy to use, not overly technical and with enough
calculations to make me feel comfortable to design a system.

How to Read the "Wheel of Time" series

In 1990, I picked up a book by a writer named Robert Jordan, who was mainly known among fans of fantasy for the Conan novels he penned, which were among my favorites at the time. I bought it without a moment's hesitation and loved it. The Eye of the World followed the classic formula high fantasy had been treading since Tolkien wrote of hobbits leaving the Shire with Nazgul in pursuit.
Getting to the end of the book and realizing it was the first in the series was icing on the cake of a thrilling, fast paced fantasy read. I couldn't wait for what I assumed would be the conclusion, the third book in the series. After all, nearly all high fantasy before the 90's were trilogies.
Alas, Book 3 did not wrap up the story, and in a pre-Internet world, I had no way of knowing that Jordan intended for 12 books. By the time book 6 came out, I was tired of waiting for closure.
So I got stuck at book seven for several years. Last year, I began listening to Book 7, sure that I'd be using it to augment my actual reading of the book. I'm not sure I've picked up a Jordan novel since. But I am about to begin Book 11. And I'm looking forward to the posthumous collaboration of Jordan with Brandon Sanderson. So, to all those who have given up on Jordan, and wished they hadn't, or to those who are thinking about starting but have heard too many negative reviews, here's how I recommend reading Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series.
1. Understand that Jordan loves detail. He describes clothing in so much detail, that if "Wheel of Time" ever gets optioned for film or television, the costume designers will be able to go for a lot of coffee breaks. He is fond of giving elaborately detailed descriptions of every character, even minor ones.
2. The repetition of previously established plot elements in subsequent books is for people traveling on planes who pick up book 5 in the airport. It allows them to enter the world enough to get through the read. It's a device publishing companies use with bestselling series like this to ensure that the series remain a bestseller. While I have never started any series mid-way through, some people apparently do, and these passages are for them.
3. Jordan likes to weave intricate plots with a cast of characters so large it necessitates a glossary at the end of each book. Many of the books are entirely character based, and so seem to have "no action" taking place. This is because many readers want someone to storm a tower, engage in a climactic battle, or throw a ring into a fiery pit. Jordan is too busy marrying characters or introducing a new plot thread to bother with such things. And while he may not talk about a character for one book, he almost always returns to them.
4. I started thinking about "Wheel of Time" as a television series. It's long enough to sustain several seasons, and the cast is basically the OC meets LOTR. We watch TV one episode at a time. I began to view the chapters in each book as "episodes" of "Wheel of Time" as a television series, and each book as a "season." I don't like every episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and there are some seasons I like better than others. Some of my favorite episodes are in my least favorite seasons. But I love the characters, and I want to see what happens to them. I love the characters in Wheel of Time. I want to see what happens to them. So I keep "tuning in."
5. I got over the reasons I quit. Simply put, they were my reasons. I had expectations of Jordan he never intended to fulfill. I expected him to wrap it up in a trilogy. He didn't. I expected him to snap Rand out of his sullen funk. He didn't. I expected him to stop telling me about the embroidery on coats or dresses. He didn't. I expected him to bring a certain major character back from the dead. He didn't. And finally, I expected him to finish before he passed away. And he didn't.
It was that last one that really galvanized me. When I heard he had terminal cancer (many years after it was a reality), it got me thinking about the legacy the man would leave on this earth. An epic bestselling fantasy series. And I realized that, to quote Elvis and Sinatra, he'd done it his way. I might not like some of the choices Jordan made, but I love the world he created and the people walking through it. And I want to know how they fare in the end.
So that's my journey to Book 11 of "Wheel of Time" and I share it because I want new readers to know what to expect, but also to let go of those expectations, and know that the journey is worth taking. Especially if you want to be there when the final novel is released next year.
Me? I'll be starting book 1 again this fall and listening to all the previous "Seasons" of "Wheel of Time," one per month, in anticipation of the final installment. The Wheel of Time turns...and I'll be "turning pages" with it.

A Tremendous Start, But Beware

The Wheel of Time is probably the best-known and most widely read fantasy series other than The Lord of the Rings.
When this book was published in 1988 or 1989, it created a sensation -- a tremendous first volume that had the usual good-evil battle and tons of action but also was filled with magic, history, politics, sociology, cultural background and realistic characters. When I re-read the first five books, I was amazed at the details of history and politics that Jordan provided in his world. Jordan also has numerous protagonists, not just one or two primary ones like many other fantasy writers.
Moreover, Eye of the World features strong men and, through their magical abilities and powerful personalities, stronger women. Jordan has been rightly lauded for the prominent and powerful roles he created for the female characters.
The Great Hunt, The Dragon Reborn, The Shadow Rising and The Fires of Heaven followed and created a tremendous series such that The New York Times noted that Jordan had come to dominate the genre that Tolkien made famous.
In Eye of the World, the writing is smooth, the various characters and their motivations work well, and there's action aplenty. The sense of innocence and mystery that correspond to the heroes' relative lack of knowledge of their surroundings and the world at large is palpable and realistic.
Unfortunately, starting with Lord of Chaos (book 6), Jordan's creation became unwieldy. Instead of concentrating on following the themes and story-threads of books 1-5 (which combined are more than 3500 pages, hardcover), he created new storylines, bogged down the narrative and halted the pace of the epic. Book 8 in particular is an unmitigated disaster -- 650 pages (hardcover) of wheel-spinning (pardon the pun) with almost no progress to the story. Book 9 began to jump-start the narrative once again.
The series is at 10 books (the tenth will be published in about two months from now) and growing (13 total possible -- it's a common numerical theme in the books), thus the last volume will be published in 2006, at the earliest.
The Eye of the World is great, as are the next four in the series. They are, however, addictive, so know what you're getting into.

An original, fantasy epic

This book was recommended to me by the manager of a brick and mortar store nearby. I have read a great deal of science fiction/fantasy, and after a while, it all starts to feel the same. You know what I mean: how many times can we revisit Tolkein-esque charcaters like elves, dwarves, and orcs? I was very pleased to discover an entirely new world.
Robert Jordan has created a landscape of magnificent proportions. Accents, legends, superstitions, politics...His amazing attention to detail allowed me to become fully immersed in the story. Even more surprising is that the quality of his writing is maintained throughout the book's length of 782 pages. I couldn't put this novel down, with the result that I finished it well inside of a week.
This is the first book of a series, and the reviews for some of the later books aren't as glowing. However, I feel that this book is a great read, and can stand on its own. It is not uncommon for series to degrade over time -- take a look at "Wishsong of Shannara"by Terry Brooks, "The One Tree" by Stephen R. Donaldson, or "The Sorceress of Darshiva" by David Eddings. All three of these books fail to live up to the quality of others in their respective series, but that doesn't mean you should avoid the series altogether.
"Eye of the World" provides us with an epic that is also refreshingly new. Robert Jordan presents us with a world that is the most richly colorful since Tolkein. If you're a fan of fantasy, then don't miss reading this book.
