Interesting But Annoyingly Dated

The book is built around the election of a Russian Pope and then describes his trials and tribulations. The book was written in the early 1960s and may have seemed bold at the time, but subsequent true-life Vatican history has been more intriguing, thus rendering this book kinda tame. So, I found myself reading it mainly for the description of how a pope goes about his days. There's not much of a plot here. There is a lot of Catholic theology and emotional stress, but it's not the kind of book that will keep you up till 3 in the morning (although I just finished it -- at 3 in the morning!) West is an excellent writer and hardly a page goes by when I am not impressed by his command of the language and his insight into papal thought. So, as I say, it was interesting, but annoyingly dated.

The Shoes of the Fisherman

One of my favourite books! I had read it not long after it was published in the 1960s and I decided I wanted to read it again (but had long ago given my copy away. I bought a secondhand copy from Amazon and it is just as relevant today as it was then. The main reason I wanted to re-read it was because of the newly elected Pope being Russian - he seems to have some of the qualities of the pope in this book and I hope he has the same attitude to the wealth of the Catholic church. Highly recommended

Thoughts of a Pope

A prescient book about the future Popes, evidently published the day John XXIII died.
Prescient in that John Paul 1 evidently wanted to give much of the Churches wealth to help the poor and John Paul II was from Eastern Europe (Poland).
Interesting extracts from the Pope's 'diary' where he writes his personal thoughts about wanting to make his mark on the Vatican and the world.
I was a bit disappointed in the end where it was rather left hanging without a final climactic action but overall an excellent read.
The film of the book had a better finale but was only loosely based on the book (inspired by?).The Shoes of the Fisherman

I wish that the book was updated to show current styles and that some of the photos were in color.

These hairstyles are "a blast from the past" and no matter what type of hair you have, you'll enjoy the many photos. The subject matter truly transcends ethnicities. You will learn about different cultures as you view the creative "hair art". My god-daughter wants to attend a highschool cosmetology course, so I bought this book as an inspiration. It worked! :)

"Casual duplicity picks at the threads of our social fabric," Keyes warns, and not just because it creates a greater tendency toward suspicion and mistrust. The consequences of letting people get away with lying can be severe: when somebody gets a job based on a bogus résumé, for example, he or she deprives those applicants who didn't falsify their work credentials. Keyes deplores what he dubs an "alt.ethics" that has made lying more acceptable, and he points to a variety of contributing factors in society, from postmodernism's denial of a literal truth to the ease of making unverified statements online. This largely anecdotal broadside essentially replays David Callahan's The Cheating Culture, though with fresher stories that address recent incidents like the Martha Stewart trial and the controversies surrounding several authors and journalists who have blurred fiction and nonfiction or simply fabricated their stories. Keyes takes a relatively nonpartisan approach; he criticizes Bill Clinton and Al Gore for their false statements, but attacks George W. Bush as the "quintessential baby boomer," accusing the president, and an entire generation, of a self-righteous refusal to confront, let alone speak, the truth. He doesn't offer much of a solution beyond a reaffirmation that lying is wrong and we shouldn't do it, advice that will surprise no one but may get some additional airplay in this heated election cycle.

No one tells the truth

And that's the truth! It turns out kids lie by the age of four, and earnestly. I mean they are so convincing, you almost believe them faster and more than when former President Bush said " Mission Accomplished" and you and 100 Million other Americans thought he meant the War in Iraq ( he meant the Afghanistan Oil line ) any way, its a very good read about how no one tells the truth. So if you want that truth, read this book.

Required Reading For All Americans

This well-researched and cogently written expose should be required reading for all Americans. Mr. Keyes utilizes both anecdotal evidence, and to the extent it is available, statistics and other evidence, to demonstrate that "truth" is a rapidly vanishing value in our current society. He then explains that the ramifications of this value decline are significant; the ability to be able to "presume" honesty is at the core of our relationships, both personal, financial, and professional.

Indeed, dishonesty is our society is so prevelant that the truth-teller is currently at a distinct disadvantage. The witness is a judicial proceeding who tells the truth without embellishment will be discounted, as judges and juries presume that the witness, like all those before them, has exagerrated. Similarly, the job applicant who does not fudge will be rejected, as fudging is now presumed.

Despite its weighty subject, Mr. Keyes' writing style is engaging. Moreover, the validity of Mr. Keyes' points are reinforced by everyday life. I highly recommend this book.
