For such men as John Scotus Eriugena, Anselm of Canterbury, Abaelard, Hugo of St. Victor, John of Salisbury, Alexander of Hales, Bonaventure, Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, Siger of Brabant, Thierry of Freiburg, Roger Bacon, William of Occam, — these are truly thinkers of the first order, and their labours are worthy of the notable studies now increasingly made of them…

Thought-provoking, Supplemental Lectures to the Author's "History of Medieval Philosophy."
By Ronald
With broad and sweeping strokes, Maurice De Wulf paints a picture of the relationship between the intellectual and societal life of the Middle Ages (beginning with the 12th century). He first outlines the dominant philosophical system of the time, Scholasticism, and its most relevant doctrines. Then, he examines how these doctrines found expression in the politics, art, and daily-living of Medieval men.

The author calls this work a supplement to his "History of Medieval Philosophy," and it does certainly read like a supplement. De Wulf never dives too deep into any one topic, treating most things with a general, rather than a specific, approach. It is as if he is only interested in allowing you a peek into each room before he moves on to the next. Insofar as this was his intention, he succeeded. However, such broad strokes may be dangerous when treating such a delicate and intricate subject as Scholastic philosophy; at times his approach did not do justice to the complexities of the doctrines he was summarizing.

One point, though, the author demonstrated very well was that the inviolable dignity of the human person is essentially a Scholastic concept. The state, he then reasons, must exist for the sake of the individual, not the other way around. This is a re-occurring theme throughout the book.

Also, the book contains a few beautiful gems such as this:
(Speaking of Gothic architecture) "Their lofty arches flooded with light, their windows sparkling in the sun like Oriental tapestry, their noble and expressive vaults, their profusion of paintings and of figures and of symbols, - this is not the work of men who are skeptical of life." (page 137)

One word on the format: it reads very fast, not only because of the style, but because the size of the font is almost double that of average books.
