While the Mayo Clinic Heart Book has more illustrations and offers outstanding coverage of anatomy and physiology, the Yale book has better information on drugs; heart disease in women, ethnic minorities, and children; and consumer advice for patients. Both books are fine resources for consumer health collections. Libraries that already own the Yale book need not add the Mayo Clinic Heart Book , but those looking for additional material on heart disease should purchase it.

Concise, scientifically rigorous, and part of a coherent series

There are a million of these kinds of books, so it was hard to settle on just one. To narrow the field, I essentially eliminated any books that were just by some random person. Having a wacky personality or a bold new insight into childhood development may be good for spicing up an episode of Dr. Oz, but I prefer a book that has the backing of some kind of medical institution. I was pretty sure that meant a book from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sounds good, right?

My big problem with the AAP books was that there were just too many of them. A book on "taking your baby home." A book on his first month. A book on his first year. A book on his first five years. A book on his third Tuesday through his ninth winter solstice. All very fine books, judging by reviews, but the whole collected seemed a bit too incoherent to me. And did I really need an encyclopedia's worth of literature to get this kid through his first year?

Then there's this book. A measly handful of reviews, which is odd, considering it's the follow up to the well-reviewed Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. That was our pregnancy book of choice, and we thought it was great. So we went for it, and I'm happy to say that this book is just as great.

To me, the most important thing about this book is that it's got balance. It's readable, with enough humor to keep you interested, but not so much as to be cloying and false. It's not a roller coaster of hilarity written in the style of a home appliance manual or a midcentury scouting guidebook, but there's a good joke here and there. And it steers you in the right direction, laying out the pros and cons of each decision you need to make, but it doesn't get preachy. There's no agenda other than what's best for mother and child. Maybe best of all, though, is that it's concise without being cursory. It's got almost everything we've needed to know so far -- we haven't really been surprised by a recommendation from the pediatrician yet -- but doesn't ramble.

All in all, a fantastic book. I can't imagine how they'd improve it.

Sensible, scientific and not at all preachy

Most baby books are filled with cutesy emotional stories and thinly veiled judgments, but this one just presents the facts and recognizes that everyone's baby, and everyone's circumstances are different. For a person with a logic-based brain, this is a great resource without all the annoying emotional filler.

Do not buy for kindle

This review is for the kindle version of the book, which is terrible. I was hoping to use this book as a reference that I could look at while taking care of my baby, or when questions came up. The kindle version of this book does not allow for quickly jumping between chapters or topics, the "go to" option only shows the first three chapters, and the remaining 27 or so are impossible to jump to. This essentially makes the ebook useless to me.
I am sure there is a lot of good information in this book, I found the mayo clinic guide too a healthy pregnancy (which I bought in paperback) extremely useful, and I assume the physical version of this book would be the same.

This fine piece of scholarship presents a systematic application of sociological models to a movement whose heart and soul is sectarian. In examining Seventh-Day Adventisms history and development from its inception as a postmillennialist movement in the 1800s to its current status as a faith tradition with a distinctive identity, Vance (psychology/sociology, Georgia Southwestern State Univ.) has crafted a remarkably readable book of religio-sociological research. Vance argues that Adventisms move from sectarianism to institutionalization has succeeded through the creation of physical structures that reinforce its unique identity while meeting temporal needs that allow for a more accommodating response to the world. This thesis is borne out by Vances examination of family structure, theology, and the development of the movement. Sociologist asks why Adventists won't ordain women

Social science Professor Laura Vance tells the amazing story how Seventh-day Adventism, which was founded by Ellen Harmon White, the most prolific woman writer and preacher of the nineteenth-century, moved in 100 years from an egalitarian social ethic to the almost total exclusion of women from its administration. Since White's death, Adventism has moved toward the mainstream of American religion, adopting the social conservatism as well as the theological positions of evangelicalism, and systematically excluding women from leadership positions. In contrast to the early Adventist pioneers, who favored various reform movements such as anti-slavery and women's health issues, American church bureaucrats have narrowed their social gaze and moved to the right in their implicit political stance. This trend, which actively favored public evangelism over social reform and suppressed women's participation in leadership, has since the late 1970's been challenged by new voices calling for the ordination of women to the gospel ministry and other leadership positions in the SDA church. In addition, the international growth of the membership of the SDA church, adding millions of members in countries where patriarchialism and traditional power structures favor men has helped keep women out of power. The answer, says Vance, is not for Adventist leaders to imagine they are fighting a battle against feminism or liberalism but to embrace once again the diversity and openness of its early history, an Edenic time when women and men sang and preached side-by-side, when the male leaders were not afraid of the visionary power of women but practiced a co-operative type of gender equality.
Vance's book comes as the fourth in a series of comprehensive non-denominational interpretations of Adventism which began in the 1980's with Ron Numbers and Jonathan Butler, "The Disappointed: Millerism and Millenarianism in the Nineteenth-Century" (Indiana University Press, 1989, Malcom Bull and Keith Lockhart's "Seeking a Sanctuary: Seventh-day Adventism and the American Dream" (Harper and Row, 1989) and Michael Pearson, Millenial Dreams and Moral Dilemmas: Seventh-day Adventists and Contemporary Ethics" (Cambridge Unversity Press, 1990). Vance's book, written largely from the perspective of gender issues, gathers from a hundred years of the "Adventist Review" and from more recent publications such as "Spectrum".
The style of Professor Vance's book, written after extensive field research in actual Adventist congregations and at Walla Walla College, will appeal to both social scientists studying the religious phenomenon of Adventism, and to SDA members, clergy and teachers who wish to view themselves in the words of an intelligent and sympathetic outsider. Teachers of American religious movements will find this book the best general introduction to Adventism for students who are also interested in women's issues, social science theory and religion. Highly recommended.

Very Powerful Tools Of Learning

Edmond Bordeaux Szekely has written a masterpiece. The author's reason for writing this book is to present the method of study he learnt at the Sorbonne in Paris. The result is a concise book that presents a powerful method of "studying" a book and not just reading it. He presents laws of nature, with examples from plant life, and uses them to explain the method. The author presents the laws of abundance followed by selection from that abundance, and finally, assimilation.

I no longer read books; I study them, and have found in this book an excellent method. This book is not only for students in schools or collages but for anyone who wants to seriously assimilate knowledge.

Sections include Creative Imagination: the link between thought and feeling, Diagnosing Intellectual Deficiencies, Research Work, and Know Thyself.

In this small book Szekely gave me a method of study that I wish I had learnt a long time ago. He provided very important knowledge on the relationship between thought, feelings, and actions (as well as memory) with Creative Imagination providing the link between thoughts and feelings. The approach that he recommends is an active and engaging approach.
