About the Author
Jacques Robert is a Professor of Biological Oncology at the University of Bordeaux, France and currently teaches cell biology, basic oncology and molecular pharmacology to medical and scientific students, with special courses on new developments in cancer targeted therapies. He is an oncobiologist at the department of Biopathology of Institut Bergonié, the Comprehensive cancer centre of Bordeaux, and is responsible for the routine and specialised clinical chemistry tests performed in patients. His research activities at INSERM U916 are focused on the molecular determinants of the activity of anticancer drugs, both at the levels of the patient’s genome (pharmacogenetics) and at the level of the tumour genome (pharmacogenomics). This activity is developed on both in vitro and in vivo models and at the level of clinical studies aiming at identifying the genetic factors involved in the efficiency and toxicity of classical and targeted anticancer drugs, especially in colorectal, head-and-neck and breast cancers.

A Must Read for Beginners and Experts

The book by Robert, the Textbook of cancer signaling, is one of the best works on cell signaling available as an introduction. As the author indicates in the preface the intent is for oncologists to obtain a better perspective of the issues associated with the wealth of new therapeutics as well as some of the key issues behind their introduction. For the most part the work is a high level, but not simplistic, organization and presentation of the key signaling paths. The general approach is to detail one class of paths after another and describe in excellent detail the elements of those pathways and how they function. Then there is a brief exposition of how aberrations in the pathways lead to oncogenic effects and then a discussion on pharmacological possibilities. This is done chapter by chapter.

The author’s collection and organization is superb and it presents the reader with an organization that they can come back to time and time again. He covers kinases, including MAP and other elements, cytokines, TGF, G protein, Wnt, Notch, and Hedgehog. He also discusses integrins and a collection of adhesion molecules. There is a discussion of B and T cell issues including Toll Like receptors and lymphocytic receptors. He ends with excellent discussions on cell cycle control as well as apoptosis.

The Appendices are superb summaries of DNA control, gene expression and protein activity. Overall this is a book that should be on the desk of almost every oncologist and it is an excellent summary for those involved in pathway analysis and their implications.

The most important elements of the book are the author’s organization and integration. It is simple, straightforward and touches on all the current elements under consideration.

This is not a book for the specialist but it is worth reading by those deeply involved in that work to see haw one person who truly understands the depth and breadth sees it structured.

On the side of a critique, and this is hard given the superb effort displayed, issue such as epigenetic factors should have gotten some bit of discussion. Specifically the issue of methylation and miRNA silencing need to be integrated into the overall signaling fabric. However that would clearly have extended and expanded the work

Also the reader should not look at this as a reference book, it was not intended as such.

Finally my only one negative is the lack of an Index. That most likely is a publisher problem and not the author’s problem. The lack of an index is not that serious since the author has organized the book so well it is almost not necessary.

I would strongly recommend this book for anyone seeking to learn pathway issues in cancer and those who are deeply involved already. The logical wholeness of the work is worth understanding by all.

Watered-down and of little value

I had to buy this book for the strings class at college. The whole class was bored to death for the whole semester, despite the good effort by the instructor to make the best of it. It looks like the publisher decided to divide the Essential Elements for Strings (which is a fine beginning book that I did several years ago) into 2 books in order to generate more business. If you already know the notes in the first position, don't waste your money on this book. There are lots of good post-absolute-beginner book for violin - Spotlight on Strings, ABCs of Violin, All for Strings, String Builder, or Essential Elements for Strings (NOT this 2000 thing). For private instructions for beginners, I would recommend Doflein Book 1 and Suzuki Book 1.

Lesson book

I understand that many instructors love this series, but I found ABCs of Violin a bit better for self study. The CDs are nice to hear what it is you are supposed to sound like and to play along with after you get the piece down. Do get both book 1 and 2 if this is the series you are going to use. Once you get going, it doesn't take long to want more pieces to play that you like. I play every piece in the book, but I play the pieces I like much more often for practice. If you push yourself you can get through book 1 and 2 in less than 2 months. Do get the books with both the CD and DVDs, they are a big help.
It may take hours of practice but when you start playing songs (pieces) you like it is a ball. I'm at 3 months now and am starting to learn Vivaldi's Spring, and a number of Fiddle tunes. Bach's Jesu (full solo version (advanced)) is still giving me fits, but I have just started learning second and third posistions.
I find the advanced Fiddle books teach, or at least make you learn, double stops much more than many of the violin lesson books.

I feel ripped off.

The included CD contains only 71 of the songs in the book. If you want the remaining songs you much purchase an additional CD for $12.99. The first book was not this way, its CD contained ALL the music to go along with the book. I feel tricked and ripped off.

Still A Favorite

I first read this book 4 years ago just seeking a good read, not knowing who P.B.Wilson was. I did not expect the blessings that I received after reading Knight in Shining Armor. Wilson really opened my eyes, allowing me to look within myself instead of depending on a man to solve my life problems.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely have a desire for marriage and want a God-fearing man to take my hand for that long walk while here on this Earth. However, the one thing many women fail to realize is that Jesus is our first love. Initially, I didn't understand what that meant. After reading this book, the dust was cleared. I'm a better woman now that I've made my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ #1 in my life.

Knight in Shining Armor truly is a book for every woman because it speaks of more than how to prepare for a spiritual partner, but of how to love Jesus first. Seek Him and He will take care of the rest. It's that simple.

I encourage any woman who is feeling lonely, frustrated in the dating game, soon to be married, getting divorced, or compromised spiritually to read this book for your own awakening. I'm sure that after your 6 month commitment, you, too, will be spiritually refreshed and abundantly blessed!!

Single and Waiting on your Knight.

I highly recommend this book to every woman who's desire to be married. First married to God and then to their mate. This book really open my eyes on things to look for in a mate and the signs of an imitator. God is so good and he will not allow us to be ignorant of Satan tricks, plots and schemes. I'd purchased this book over 7 years ago and shortly after I purchased the book, I broke up with my ex-boyfriend. I was tired of living in sin and I knew God had much more for me. It was in 2007, I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to read the book again and everything I read in the is what I'm currently still practicing. Is been over 6 years since I read the book and I'm still waiting on my Knight in Shining Amour. I'm building a greater relationship with the Lord and I'm learning to love me. I know it was the Holy Spirit who inspired P.B. Wilson to write this book and I Thank God for the gift of Exhortation. Even though I'm still single and practicing celibacy, I know, No good thing will God with hold from me if I continue to walk up right before him.

Q. Why did you write this book?

A. At Liberty Jane Clothing we had a blast when Pinterest came out. The traffic coming to our site was awesome. That led to my work on the Pinterest Power book and the marketingonpinterest.com blog. So that whole time we sort of ignored Instagram. I remember talking to a small business owner about Pinterest and he said, "actually we're getting better results with Instagram" and I thought - "woah, hold on, I better not ignore Instagram anymore". So I asked him what he was doing and I was impressed. We jumped into Instagram and started documenting our marketing strategy. That work led to this book. 
 
Q. Who is the ideal reader for this book?

A. I write all my books for small business marketers. I try to find examples that corporate marketers can relate to as well, but my focus is supporting entrepreneurs. In this book I feature some really great marketers doing fantastic stuff on Instagram - I interviewed them and included the interviews in the book - so there is truly something for everyone. I also enjoy writing for the non-profit sector and I try to include a non-profit example or two in all my books.
 
Q. Is there one main secret or tip from the book you want to share?

A. The guts of this book really focus on 10 direct marketing strategies available to any marketer. That's the surprising thing - that Instagram works very well for direct marketing - meaning marketing that has a clear and compelling call-to-action. So my hope is that out of the 10 strategies we cover, there will be one or two that really click with every reader. 
 
Q. So what's an example of one of the 10 ways a marketer can use Instagram for direct marketing?

A. I love using the example of the "visual product launch". It's one of the 10 direct marketing strategies we dive into very deeply in the book. Most marketers will be familiar with the idea of a product launch sequence - where you begin communicating with your core audience about a new product or service - building up anticipation, intrigue, and desire. Traditionally that has been done with email campaigns, and Jeff Walker popularized the concept of the video product launch. Many companies are using Instagram to do a version of this tried and true marketing work.
 
Q. How does a Visual Product Launch on Instagram work?

A. Well, the short answer is - you begin taking pictures or video and releasing them on Instagram systematically at the various stages of product development. You can see how we do this on our Instagram profile at instagram.com/libertyjaneclothing. For our work we start with the activity happening in the design of a new product, then the assembly of it, then the shipping and build interest and anticipation toward the day the item is available. I've even seen BMW using this method on Instagram - lots of people are doing it. So in the book I do a really deep dive into exactly how to do it.
 
Q.  Isn't Instagram just for people in the 18-24 demographic? 

A. No. I'm a 40-something guy and lots of my friends from Facebook are signing up for Instagram all the time. The user statistics are skewed toward the younger demo, but that changes as it scales, and Instagram recently announced they were over 150 million monthly users. If you ask a teenager what they are doing on their phone, they'll usually say Instagram, Snapchat, or Pinterest - or maybe Candy Crush. Facebook is totally over for them - at least for the teens in our area in Seattle.   
Q. What's the connection between Instagram and the whole shift toward more visual content? 

A. My theory is that Social Media 1.0 (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter) were mostly about conversations - about finding people and typing something back and forth. I think people are tired of that type of interaction. It's exhausting. Pinterest and Instagram are both "conversation light" and I think that's part of the appeal. There is no expectation of speaking - so you don't have to worry about constantly checking to see if you've got a new message you need to deal with - you just share images. It's easier.
 
Q. What does that shift to visual content mean for marketers?

A. In some ways it means that what was old (Print Advertising) is somewhat new again. Instagram and Pinterest are both fantastic platforms for a 21st century version of print ads. These are ads that marry a beautiful or intriguing picture with short, compelling copy. There is a science and well-worn direct marketing history to it. There are lessons from the great masters of Print Advertising that need to be learned and applied to Instagram and Pinterest. Books on those topics include the work of Joe Sugarman (The Adweek Copywriting Handbook) and David Ogilvy (Ogilvy On Advertising).  
 
Q. Okay, last question - what's your next book about?

A. Youtube Marketing Power comes out in January 2014 and is a deep dive into how to do direct marketing on that platform. It was fun to write because Youtube was the first social network we got into when we started Liberty Jane Clothing. It's the platform we feel like we know the best - and interestingly, it's the biggest/best platform that still perplexes lots of small business marketers, and even big corporate marketers. We aren't a very big deal in Youtube, but we have over 11,000 subscribers and 2 million video views - so we've had some proven results. And of course, I interview a whole collection of awesome people doing great things in Youtube - so it was fun to write.

Very basic book, for anyone with no knowledge about Instagram

I bought this book based upon all the positive reviews here. I am an Instagram user and wanted to learn more ways to use Instagram to market myself and my business. This book is for anyone who knows nothing about Instagram, it is very basic. If you are already using Instagram and know how to market online, this book is not for you. This is basic, a general overview of using Instagram, hashtags and the app. Not for anyone who has any knowledge about these things. Did not give me any new ideas or tips on ways to use Instagram to build my brand.

Great help to get started on Instagram!

This book was a great help in getting me started marketing my etsy business on instagram! I have to be honest I wasn't doing a good job of getting my shop out there on social media. I set up a blog...which no one read, put up a facebook page which no one paid any attention to. Did a pinterest page that I never kept up with. None of it seemed to click until I read Jason's book on Instagram! I took his advice, set up an account and started liking and following people interested in my area (my tribe as he called it) and oh my gosh, its taking off! In three weeks I have over 30 followers meeting my goal of getting ten per week. I love seeing the pics others are putting up, am working on making better pics myself to get more likes and its spilling over onto my facebook and pinterest pages now with a renewed sense of what they can do to help my marketing efforts! All I can say is if you have a small business and want to see it grow in new directions you should read this book, not just for the instagram tips but for tons of marketing info and ideas that Jason incorporates into it!

You cannot afford NOT to read this book

When I first picked up this book, I did not know what to fully expect. I initially just wanted a self-help book to get me familiar with Instagram. What I got out of this book was so much more. The author, Jason Miles, gives a great historical backdrop on the power of these types of applications. Additionally, before he delves into the use of Instagram, he provides examples of the power of this great application through the work of other companies who have exploited its power to get a foothold in the market.

I must admit, I am lacking in the intensity and drive when it comes to these social mediums. That was then. Now, I am a firm believer that I must be diligent in my efforts to succeed by learning, embracing, and utilizing such marketing instruments as Instagram. I simply cannot afford NOT to ignore Instagram.

SKILLFUL SCHOLARSHIP

Coutinho is a pleasure to read; his prose is uncommonly clear and cogent, finding and finely slicing along the natural 'perforations' to be found in the topic at hand. Though generally true to its self-description as an introduction, Coutinho’s presentation does venture into some unique, creative and helpful interpretations, especially of Zhuangzi.
I do, however, have a few critical observations. Most of these are a consequence of his not being a Daoist sage. This can be forgiven him in as much as (to my thinking) it is unlikely there has ever been such a sage. (The assumption that those who have shared their imaginative vision of sagacity have actually fully embodied that vision strikes me as a product of the religious mind.) Still, there is an inside and an outside to these visions; and scholarship must almost of necessity remain on the outside, describing, but not experiencing, even if by way of imaginative approximation, and some of the spirit of these daos cannot be otherwise grasped. Think Zen.
Coutinho suggests that these Daoist philosophies can be judged on the basis of their "plausibility". In view of his observation that all these daos have the sole aim of facilitating "human flourishing", however, one would think that an equally important question (if not more so) would be whether or not they are efficacious. Do they accomplish that end? Yet this question cannot be answered by scholarship. In the case of cultural impact, though one might speculate and opine on the outskirts of the question, we lack the tools to actually answer it. In the case of actual personal liberation, only the individual can testify and that testimony correctly carries little weight for scholarship. Nevertheless, in failing to ask the question Coutinho leaves behind the central purpose of these daos. They are not simply philosophies for philosophy's sake, but philosophies of life which cannot really be described or 'understood' without life engagement.
This 'outside' view can also be seen in his concern for the possible negative ethical outcomes that Daoist ‘anti-humanism’ might inspire. Ethical concerns about a non-ethical sensibility are fine for those who remain in the sphere of ethics, but they evince a failure to experientially participate in that sensibility. Those who worry about right and wrong remain in the sphere of right and wrong, and the whole point is to realize a more transcendent view. Still, some of these concerns can be alleviated by pointing out that this description of the sage is not prescriptive—it is not something to impose upon the world; it is a consequence of sagacity, not the path to it. We need not worry, therefore, unless we believe that sages can be sociopaths. Thus, this appeal to ethical transcendence might best be accompanied by a warning: This "inhumanity" is performed by a sage—do not attempt it at home.
A similar ‘outside’ view can be seen in his concerns regarding the “logical inconsistency” to be found in Zhuangzi’s stripe of skepticism (whatever that might be). Since the whole point is to realize a point of view inclusive of what reason cannot fathom, so-called inconsistencies are of little consequence. Life does not resolve to reason.
Finally, though he acknowledges the uniqueness of the philosophy of the Inner Chapters, like most commentators he cannot resist interpreting it through the lens of the “School of Zhuangzi” chapters despite their differing significantly from Zhuangzi. Zhuangzi, for instance, mentions qi, but the spirit of his philosophy should tell us that he couldn’t care less whether there is any such thing at all, yet we are referred to a metaphysical belief in “the continuous qi that permeates the cosmos” (22).
All this having been said, Coutinho’s scholarship is thankfully and delightfully received.

I had the pleasure of having Dr. Coutinho as a professor. He is a wonderful lecturer. This book mirrors his teaching skills and approaches Daoist Philosophy from a unique new perspective. It is an informative book for anyone interested in early Chinese philosophy.

Incredibly Insightful

This is one of the most helpful books on the market for understanding the deeply complex and at times confusing world of ancient Chinese philosophy. Not only does Dr. Steven Coutinho make every effort to thoroughly explain notions, terms, and ancient chinese characters themselves that were used in the Daoist texts, he is also fully dedicated to taking the reader on an exploratory journey that can be, at times, quite profound. This book has helped me to change lens' from the classical Western viewpoints about morality, ethics, and how we live our lives in general to a more holistic, hermeneutic, and verbial as opposed to definitive understanding of the world. Understanding the important perspective of organizing the world into process as opposed to product has not only made a positive impact on my subjective experience as a human being but it also has shown me that there is a very strong logical or objective case to be made in favor of this perspective. While the title may lead you to believe the book is only for beginners, I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the topic in general.

About the Author

Christopher D. Moyes received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia in the area of comparative muscle physiology. After postdoctoral fellowships in molecular physiology at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Simon Fraser University, he took a position at Queen's University, where he is an associate professor in the Department of Biology. He teaches a spectrum of courses in cell biology and animal physiology, while continuing to pursue his research interests in molecular physiology and biochemistry.

Chris is a recipient of the Premier's Research Excellence Award. He is a member of the American Physiological Society and The Canadian Society of Zoologists and has served on the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada grant panel for Animal Biology. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers, including contributions to four books. Among his recent papers are Moyes, C.D., and D.L. Hood (2003) "Origins and consequences of mitochondrial variation in vertebrate muscle," Annual Review of Physiology 65: 177-201 and Moyes, C.D. (2003) "Controlling muscle mitochondrial content," Journal of Experimental Biology 206: 4285-4391.

Patricia M. Schulte received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in the area of evolutionary physiology focusing on the role that changes in gene expression play in evolution. She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where she teaches animal physiology and evolutionary physiology and runs an active research program. Using several species of fish as model systems, her research group is particularly focused on the relationship between genetic variation, performance differences, and fitness in a changing environment. She also conducts research into applied questions relating to fisheries, aquaculture, and aquatic toxicology.

Trish is a recipient of the Premier's Research Excellence Award and several teaching awards, including the UBC Science Undergraduate Society Award for Excellence in Teaching. Trish is a member of the Canadian Society of Zoologists and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. She is an associate editor for the scientific journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

She has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers, including two book chapters. Among her recent papers are DeKoning, A. B. L., D.J. Picard, S.R. Bond, and P.M. Schulte (2004) "Stress and interpopulation variation in glycolytic enzyme expression in a teleost fish, Fundulus heteroclitus," and P.M. Well Written, Highly Approachable Physiology Textbook

I used this textbook for an intro level animal physiology class. Overall the book is very well written and approachable. Concepts are laid out simply and in an easy to follow format. If you are looking for a detailed look at underlying mechanisms than this book is not for you --but this isn't the focus of physiology as a discipline. Physiology is concerned with the larger relationship between biological structure and function. For instance, why cardiac cells are different from skeletal muscle. In this regard, the book is quite excellent.

This Textbook Is Incredible!!!

I took a killer physiology class and didn't want to buy the latest edition of the textbook because it was way out of my price range. I ended up buying this one and I am so glad I did. This book is incredible for anyone taking a physiology class, especially one that requires it. I hate reading textbooks and much prefer learning from the professor but I found this book easy to read and very very informative. It has the information you need in a format that is interesting so you can actually finish a chapter without falling asleep. I highly recommend this textbook!!!
